7dare··on DOJ seizes $2.3M in cryptocurrency paid to the ransomware extortionists Darkside
Can be stopped? Doesn't sound like this is what happened here, the company paying the ransom is what stopped the hostage. The FBI simply recovered the ransom (and some more), but probably can't cover for the economic damage from the hold-up.
7dare··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2020)
Isn't your company name problematic given the historical connotations?
7dare··on Yahoo Customer Data Security Breach Litigation Settlement
Out of curiosity, why does this apply to US and Isreal residents? Is there a legal framework that makes Isarelis eligible for these kinds of settlments automatically?
7dare··on AMD Poised for Explosive CPU and GPU Sales Growth in 2019
Yeah it's just speculation, sounds even like they're trying to hype up AMD stock...
7dare··on Nations of the Amazon are seeking “shared governance” of the .amazon TLD
I don't get why Amazon would get control of the entire TLD. Can't these new TLDs be managed by some other entity which hands out domains to those that want them?
7dare··on Nations of the Amazon are seeking “shared governance” of the .amazon TLD
And $5 million is nothing for Amazon, especially given they're only actually spending a fraction of that as you mentioned.
7dare··on As Facebook Raised a Privacy Wall, It Carved an Opening for Tech Giants
Does it still affect you if you don't connect your FB account? I wouldn't think so
7dare··on Twitter has barred hundreds of accounts for posing as liberal activists
> Evidence suggests that these are mostly just attention-starved gamers looking to impress one another

What is the link with gaming I'm missing here? Is 4chan simply associated by gaming defacto? I don't see anything else about video games or any evidence of these people being gamers in the article...

7dare··on Scientists are looking for ways to put the simulation hypothesis to the test
He's arguing against that view and gave arguments. Do you have any?
7dare··on Show HN: Should I Send It? Helping you understand your mood in emails
You do know the post wasn't written specifically for you...? It might benefit other users
7dare··on What Made Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem Hard to Prove
I feel like the further you go in maths, the less attention is given to details, which are "left as exercise to the reader".
7dare··on Life in the Spanish city that banned cars
It's about reclaiming the space -- playing near a road is noisy, smelly and dangerous for kids.

"Outside" has become synonymous with car traffic, which is why children playing on the road feels so refreshing

7dare··on iOS 12 released
Even though it isn't the case right now, we must be careful for the feature not to become a feeling of privacy rather than privacy itself
7dare··on Whiteboards used after Gatwick flight information screens fail
They still have it at the Gare de Lyon in Paris
7dare··on Microsoft acquires Github
That is still conspiracy and not "Microsoft killing a project".
7dare··on Microsoft acquires Github
I don't think these are contradictory.

Even if you interpret the second one as "new buttons to advertise Microsoft products", it doesn't damage a developer-first stance or independent operation.

Moreover, GitHub has already partnered with dozens of other companies for its Education program for instance [0]. This already compromises independent operation, and displays ads to thousands of students, "whether or not they like these tools" (your words).

7dare··on Microsoft acquires Github
> In November Munich city council decided to revert to Windows by 2020 with all systems being replaced by Windows 10 counterparts.

> Reasons cited were adoption and users being unhappy with the lack of software available for Linux.

> A report commissioned by Munich and undertaken by Accenture found the most important issues were organizational.

> In 2018, journalistic group Investigate Europe released a video documentary via German public television network ARD, wherein it is claimed that the majority of city workers were satisfied with the operating system, with council members insinuating that the reversal was a personally motivated decision by lord mayor Dieter Reiter.

> Reiter denied that he had initiated the reversal in gratitude for Microsoft moving its German headquarters from Unterschleißheim back to Munich.

It's not as clear-cut as you're painting it.

7dare··on The Best Ways to Fix College Admissions Are Probably Illegal
> With a national clearinghouse, students could upload their academic records and accomplishments during their high-school career and then in their senior year simply press a button to apply to colleges. The database would be open to admissions officers at all colleges, so they could see where else students are applying, bringing a level of openness to the process. Under a matching system, students and colleges would each submit rank-order lists of each other and be paired as closely as possible.

This is precisely what we have in France, ans it's run by the government (and is thus prone to the same type of complaints as that Obamacare website).

There's a lot of contention about how well it does or doesn't work, though I'd say it gets the job done. Your results are automatically entered by your high school, and you get your results by "waves" as new spots clear up.

7dare··on Robert Langlands, who linked number theory, analysis, and geometry (2015)
I think that may be an exxageration. I study maths at a much lower level and the teacher regarily points out links between these domains.

I believe number theory is already strongly linked with analysis.

7dare··on Report of Active Shooter at YouTube HQ
Plus it's basically inviting anyone else to call in with fake information, pretending to having been there. Bad journalistic standards...
7dare··on An Update on Last Week’s Accident
The lanes aren't very well indicated, but given how visible the divider is, I don't think either an autopilot or a driver should drive off.

Reminds me of a scene in "La grande vadrouille" where a motorcyclist is killed on a mountain road because he was following the dotted line and the painter had gone to the side of the road to take a break.

Also, that's an immense pothole!

7dare··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
I don't really know how it works in the US or in this state, but in my country, you simply can't drive when it's as dark as the video appears. Either you're not in a city and you can turn your mainbeam headlights on (the blinding ones), or you're in a city and the road is much more lit and the speed limit is 50kph.

With those, the driver would've seen her from a mile away.

7dare··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
Maybe simply because "normal" people cause accidents, it's not newsworthy enough for you to hear about it?
7dare··on ‘The Trains Are Slower Because They Slowed the Trains Down’
In fact, the crash at the origin of this whol debacle was caused by a train being stopped on the tracks and being rear-ended by another.
7dare··on Show HN: Ecoji, a new base1024 emoji encoding
My current strategy is checking the first few characters visually, hoping the odds for a collision even on those are rather low.
7dare··on The Times tech columnist ‘unplugged’ from the internet, except he didn’t
That's because it's taken out of context: the fifteen tweets could well be responses to other tweets, maybe even in a conversational back-and-forth thread.

I can easily imagine reddit users or even HN users making those kinds of daily contributions.

7dare··on My CSS3 Animated Resume
I personally didn't like it, it felt a bit gimmicky, like those 2000s PowerPoints.
7dare··on The Dirty Secret of ‘Secret Family Recipes’
This might be biased because a "secret recipe" doesn't hold very much of its secret in the ingredients or instructions (all chocolate chip cookie recipes are quite similar) but the little tricks.

Adding a bit of something, or the timings of certain steps might be undocumented and make the secret recipe better than the famous one.

7dare··on Paper is dead, long live paper programming
In France, the competitive exams to major schools are not only done on paper, but you have no access to a computer whatsoever.

I was initially surprised at the idea, since it means that errors that can immediately be found on a computer (using a wrong library function, edge conditions on loops, ...) are easy to miss.

7dare··on FAA Tapes from That Oregon UFO Incident
It's not very hard for large planes to outpace a cruise jet, for the very reason that cruise speeds are rather far from maximum speeds. Even a cruise jet could outpace a cruise jet.
