This must be why they perform unconsented-to psychological studies to see if they can make hundreds of thousands of users more depressed.
Yep. Which makes the "institutional investors are handing Bitfinex hundreds of millions of real dollars in exchange for Tether" claims people are pushing even more ridiculous.
As someone who has been involved with and supportive of Bitcoin for several years (I started mining in 2011), the fact that it's impossible to point out any of the negative aspects of Bitcoin and the community surrounding it without just being downvoted or accused of "not holding any Bitcoin and being jealous" is starting to become incredibly tiresome. Denying the negative aspects of this sector is just going to encourage those negatives to continue. You guys are your own worst enemy.
I know a number of people who won't touch Bitcoin with a 500ft pole because of this shit. These are people with large sums of money that could be flowing into the sector, who are being chased away by the stupidity and shysterish behavior of the Bitcoin community and shady exchanges.
Why do you need validation from randoms on the internet so badly?
It's more like breaking out wallet snapshots at a party, handing them off to a middleman who scans and stores them for future analysis, then maybe shows them to your friends (with some advertisements mixed in) depending on whether or not their algorithm decides it's profitable to do so.
The main change will be that Google gets to record and analyze even more of the world's private interactions than they do now.
However, that is related to the point you made.. though you seem to be trying to write it off as a non-concern by using the 8 year old with a pony example.
It's kind of sad that this clickbait is already sitting the the top of HN.
Beyond the very basic fact that people sometimes communicated with each other over BBSes, there is absolutely no comparison between them and what is happening right now.
Depending on what your beliefs are, maybe nothing.. for now. However, if government or corporate interests decide that your beliefs are an issue for them at any point in the future, having them permanently stored could become an issue for you in the future.
You are hearing other perspectives. You've just chosen to write them off as "the evil media being angry that Facebook is replacing them and lashing out".
The number of posts from people who delusionally believe Bitcoin is a sure thing, "safer than a savings account", and has nowhere to go but up has increased exponentially in recent weeks.. along with posts from people taking out loans to "invest".
That's going to leave a bad taste in the mouths of many new 'adopters' (speculators) when the rate of incoming greater fools slows down and the market takes a massive downturn.
This won't end well.
