Fair. I guess it's far more pressing for the Data Controllers versus Processors (my case), so I'll stop with my biased view.
5706906c06c··on GDPR Resource Library
Why do law firms believe GDPR is a legal issue? Privacy and Security have not been an entirely legal issue, though legal representation is often in the mix when dealing with regulations. I'm curious why GDPR continues to be treated as a legal problem when the regulation is more than clear on its intent and requirements?
5706906c06c··on Show HN: Breach Insider – Detect a data breach using realistic pseudo-users
I did a similar implementation in production using DigitalShadows. We basically created "honeywords" in the database at random, and then had DS monitor for those out in the wild. That included random lines in the source code that didn't do anything other than be used as IoCs.
5706906c06c··on Amazon Macie: A machine learning service to discover and protect sensitive data
A healthy amount of data that looked like PII based on data range, potential secrets in buckets, CSVs, JSONs, Cloudtrail dumps, but also generated reports on dummy data and without fingerprinting of the live data, it wouldn't know what's real or not. The Cloudtrail feature is also useful since it provides user behavior analytics, based on use, etc.
5706906c06c··on Amazon Macie: A machine learning service to discover and protect sensitive data
I ran up a $20k+ Macie bill scanning 5 buckets in 24hrs.
5706906c06c··on Amazon Macie: A machine learning service to discover and protect sensitive data
Yes, thank you for linking, but fail to see the correlation. This tool is scanning public HTTPS endpoints based on keywords in its dictionary to discover misconfigured buckets. AWS doesn't manage the bucket Perms/ACL, the customer does. AWS' shared-responsibility model clearly defines all of this. The customer is responsible for the bucket ACL, the same would apply if I ran my stack in a data center and went on to configure Apache/NGNIX with open Directory indexes that allowed anyone to traverse them.

Not for Github, but the TruffleHog project on GitHub might be of interest to you. There is also SourceClear, which does the same for secrets in GitHub.

Note - AWS is monitoring AccessKey use and API thresholds to keep you informed.

5706906c06c··on Amazon Macie: A machine learning service to discover and protect sensitive data
Not the case. I've seen seasoned developers (not to single them out) make simple stupid mistakes with the S3 bucket ACL, Permissions, and Policies. The issue has to do with the sheer laziness of "let's create unstructured data buckets, write once and forget it all" mentality. At some point, this sort of service can be useful in identifying the "crown jewels" within the buckets. Beyond that, the ACL is noAccess by default, so I can't agree with your assertion that AWS is somehow making it difficult to sell more services in favor of vendor lockin.

5706906c06c··on Schneier: It's Time to Regulate IoT to Improve Cyber-Security
Agree, regulations could deter entrepreneurs from trying since the barrier to entry could be high. Then again, regulations like HIPAA haven't really stopped a slew of Digital Health shops from trying, so it might not be as bad.

Block. If not, then filter the content though I can tell you their content blocking algo is terrible at blocking new content so you end up in a game of cat & mouse.
5706906c06c··on Something is wrong with children's videos on the internet
Practically speaking, all of it. The prolonged effects of handing an iDevice are damaging to their psyche. Kids aren't in a position to exercise rational decisions on what is and isn't acceptable content. The Youtube for Kids content filtering isn't nearly as advanced as it should be, so parents end up spending an inconsiderable amount of time attempting to filter to no success. These videos, along with those "Daddy finger" songs, adults unwrapping toys and "Ryan's toy review" where the little brat gets all the toys and destroys them are mind-numbingly pointless and damaging (considering the lack of value). At some point, parents need to consider the unknown factors and the possibility of (incidental) trauma.

At least, that's the conclusion I've come to after watching my four-year-old consume some of the above. Counter to that, the reduction of screen time has turned her more empathetic toward her sibling, though I can only state that qualitatively.

Don't let them watch one minute of it, it's all trash.

5706906c06c··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
Yes, Castro Valley, Hayward Hills, etc. Selfishly speaking, the issue with moving further out means longer commute + plus distance from the kids school, etc. At that point, I might as well move out of state.
5706906c06c··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
San Bruno, pretty much SF territory. My family owned and lived in Fremont, and my brother's commute often hovered around 60+ minutes on BART.
5706906c06c··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
Option A, save to buy elsewhere. Option B, housing market correction, though unclear if that'll happen, so probably A. Option C, continue renting, save for kids college and retirement if I can't make it happen in the next 3-5 years, and realizing I'm being aggressively pessimistic.
5706906c06c··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
Definitely aware of the trade offs, doing the means test indicates I should own, I digress. There is an emotional component, which is the kids. I grew up moving from one continent to another with no sense of security. I don't want the same for my kids, they deserve stability in their lives, and I've convinced myself that as a provider I need to make that happen for them.

Oh no, I look like a white guy, I'm Armenian, which is a tiny community with literally one little school off of Brotherhood way. I wasn't one to care about that, but I have to tell you, whenever I take my kids to the birthday parties or some PTA event, I sort of feel at home. It's odd because up until now, I didn't care about any of that, but I suppose my mortality is helping me prioritize on what matters in life. It's a mental and very much, an emotional struggle having to compromise.
5706906c06c··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
I looked over 35th ave, which is fairly decent. Are there other pockets I should be looking at?
5706906c06c··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
Armenian, actually, and that reduces the numbers to a very small population here, Fresno and L.A.

Edit: there are other communities on the East Coast AFAIK, but I would be trading this for that.

5706906c06c··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
38, two kids and a wife. Have been living in a 900SQ/FT apt, I don't know how much longer I can take this before rage quitting and relocating somewhere else (don't know where). The sad part, as a ethnic-minority, I have just found our community for my kids, etc. It would be really tragic if I have to tear my kids away from that.

Don't get me wrong, my daily 30 minute commute on BART isn't the worst. The worst part is that I make $185,000-$238,000 (with bonus and all) and still can't afford to buy a home because I can't compete with other investors that have deep pockets filled with cash, not to mention buying a semi-decent home in a semi-OK neighborhood sets you easily back by $850K-$1.2MM. It's insane! The best I'm able to do is to pay for a $3550/mo rent and tuck away as much money as I can while providing for the wife and kids, which isn't the cheapest.

Anyway, thanks for reading. Back to work.

Edit: Armenian. Also, I'll check myself, there are others in far worse financial/living condition in the Bay Area. Comparatively speaking, I have it easier than most.
