classic HN comment. do note the name of the project and ask yourself again, was the only constraint to not use javascript?
411111111111111··on Buying an iPad Pro for coding was a mistake
But it's still a bad fit for artists too, as they're not gonna need the hardware of the pro. It's way too overpowered/expensive for what iOS permits you to do.

The normal iPad or iPad Air for media consumption are already perfect, the Pro version remains as a bad market fit

411111111111111··on Noticing when an app is only hosted in us-east-1
For the record: a PWA can also be served by a single request, it's called hydration.

My issue with these kinds of discussions is that they're inevitably using outright false arguments.

You can make a well performing website through SSR and a backend templating language, yes.

However , In a business setting with lots of developers this usually becomes an abhorrently performing website despite the SSR with the same templating language.

You can make a pwa with any of the usual frameworks and it's going to perform wonderfully... The bad performance begins when people start to write terrible code or just keep adding dependencies to cyberstalk their users.

But doing the same in the backend puts you into the same position wrt poor performance, so it's just not an argument for or against SPAs.

It's totally fine if you decide to write your website with a SSR stack however, and it could very well be the better choice for you, depending on how your skillset is aligned with the technology.

411111111111111··on JP Morgan fined by SEC for deleting email records
What? according to the article, all emails were deleted in that given timeframe with the excuse "they thought it would be impossible to delete records that were still required to be kept by regulation"

I don't think your argument works unless the article is wrong.

411111111111111··on JP Morgan fined by SEC for deleting email records
On the one hand you're saying it can't be done without some whistleblower turning up, on the other hand you think that its possible to happen accidentally.

It's kinda either/or. It's either possible that someone can get full admin privileges and deletes it off-the-record or they've got enough safeguards in place that the accidental deletion isn't possible either.

411111111111111··on Ignoring boys' emotional needs fuels public health risks
Toxic masculinity means something very specific, i.e. surpressing emotions other then anger and rage.

I don't think it's fair to equate that to "men bad".

Weren't the tensor chips in the pixel phones based on arm too?

And in the Datacenter you've also got google and Amazon making their own arm based chips, not sure if MS does the same.

However, Apples M1 Chip had the biggest impact to consumers I think. The tensor chips aren't particularly better and we just don't have any interactions with hardware servers

411111111111111··on Russia 'Coup' Live Forecast
I can't speak for a Russians perspective of saving face, as I'm an unrelated outsider.

Nonetheless, if Russia ceases their aggression after this then it wouldn't have been defeated by Ukraine. You'd basically end up with non-patriots having caused the loss, as such you'll have a group of people to blame.

411111111111111··on New study suggests that lab-grown meat produces up to 25 times more CO2
Well said. The people advocating against this research have to be completely in denial about what modern meat factories actually are like (can't really call them anything else considering how the animals exist there).

Also note that you haven't actually done the same as my example.

Now that I can agree on. Thankfully, md accepts inline html, so you can always just fall back to it for tables if you expect modifications in the future.

Though for the record, you should bee able to escape newlines with a backslash. That admittedly makes the md table into a total disaster, so not suggesting it as an actual option.

411111111111111··on Show HN: An open-source, collaborative, WYSIWYG Markdown editor
> actually wastes time because of the "___" and "|" scaffolding required.

I think you might be under a mistaken assumption here, because I don't think that this is factual.

The only way I could see your misunderstanding is if you think the quantity of whitespace in markdown tables is important, which it isn't.

This is a working md table and it's not harder to make then the equivalent html version

  |Header one|header two|
  |---|---|
  |Column value 1|column value one|
  |value 2|value two|
Etc

Wherever what's preferable is another story though.

Personally I dislike writing plain html, and would always prefer another template language to generate it, but that's just preference.

411111111111111··on Oceangate Statement, “We now believe that [all crew] have sadly been lost.”
Uh, the Titanic ran into an gigantic piece of ice which caused it to sink, the previous quote is the context for that.

This submarine likely decompressed, killing the CEO and I believe 3 rich tourists because they didn't believe they needed to check the health of their submersible, firing the people that raised security concerns.

I think it's safe to say that both captains were full of hubris

It's like the discussions about manga/manhua/manwha we keep return to, when they're all literally the same word with the same pronunciation and same meaning.

It's really interesting how much lore we've created in our forums that doesn't actually exist in the country of origin.

And you're asking that question, really?

411111111111111··on Last week's Let's Encrypt downtime
My point was that the CA can't solve it for you, they can only give you APIs and processes with which you can solve it yourself.

If your webserver supports checking the certificate validity then it's not solved by the CA, it's been solved by the developers of that software and by you installing it.

411111111111111··on Oceangate Statement, “We now believe that [all crew] have sadly been lost.”
The target of the adventure is also surprisingly ironic.

The Titanic is one of the most notorious icons of human hubris. And these tourists died to the same.

411111111111111··on San Francisco fire chief fed up with robotaxis that mess with her firetrucks
I don't think these actions take place enough times for your numbers to have any impact on the robo taxis. At that point it wouldn't even be a slap on the wrist.

You'd have to add at least 2-3 zeros before any action would be taken, and the action would likely be something else then what you are expecting. These things just don't happen often enough for this to ever be addressed without the original point of piercing the corporate veil and making management personally responsible for these crimes.

But at that point you'd likely still end up with the dynamic of people getting paid to become the fall guy

411111111111111··on Last week's Let's Encrypt downtime
The CA can't solve it for you.

The certificate authority signs certificate requests, creating certificates. The revocation process is necessary as well, but the CA doesn't have the ability to change the already issued certificate, thus it cannot take action.

A software like certbot can solve it for you, but that's not affiliated with your CA

The issue is that you tried to use vs code for Java. That plugin doesn't really work well, honestly.

The performance would have been pretty much the same if you used it like sublime text, so no plugins beyond synthax highlighting

And before someone claims that's not fair because sublime text has plugins too: no, it (to my knowledge) doesn't have any that enable the same classpath scanning vs code (and intellij or eclipse) does for java

411111111111111··on Apple Vision Pro – Why It May Be Lousy for Watching Movies on a Plane
I totally agree and would go so far as to say that the 4k streams look like shit compared to good HD DVDs because they're.

Take an average 4k Stream from YouTube/Netflix/etc and look at the transfer size for the full duration. It's gonna be something around 1-3gb per hour from my observations.

A good 4k Video is usually around 5-10x that size and with good reason, because the resolution demands a lot of bits to make it shine, no matter how well you've encoded it

411111111111111··on Meta now officially outsources support to the legal system
While you're spiritually completely correct, they're all going through legal hoops to separate themselves from these employees.

I.e. they outsource the work to an agency which get contractors to do the work for them.

Over the years we've had such controversies from all multinational corporations.

I'm just pointing this out as I noticed your comment being grayed out, and hopefully the person that downvoted you did so because of this technicality, and not because you had the audacity to critique Apple

With your username I'm surprised you think that atheism plays a role or is somehow a prerequisite. Its merely the believe that there's no god.

This action is just as likely to be done by anyone not caring for the Catholic church, which includes (among others) agnostics, Muslims, hindi, christians that don't believe in hell, christians that want to be evil, etc.

It's safe to say that the person in question was a psychopath though. Nobody with healthy empathy could do this.

The thread model is that maintainers of popular extensions get offers of several thousand $ all the time to pass over ownership. And there have been several incidents in which the new owners added trackers to the extension itself, tracking the user across all domains.

These extensions usually have full access to the DOM, so they can do everything they want to.

So their question is very much warrented: installing as new extension should always be well considered.

411111111111111··on LCD TVs won’t see any further development
> You'll be fine with any of the existing technologies of today

I think you're going too far with your statement. OLED/qd-oled and to a lesser degree WOLED all suffer from significant burn-in, which makes them pretty bad for desktop use.

Previous LCD technologies will degrade over the years by losing luminance and color accuracy, but that's a pretty minor issue compared to OLED as far as I'm concerned.

What are you even on about, I'm able to access the web metrics for my current employers consumer facing site which has single digit safari user agents, and I'm betting at least half of them will have enabled content blockers, though I don't have any metric for that.

It just depends on your target audience. Some demographics have miniscule apple presence, others have them as a majority. So, depending on your target audience, it might not be worth it. Especially because we're taking about a feature that will merely increase the brightness of the ad.

Don't interpret some idiotic agenda into a simple cost/reward speculation.

Fwiw, this comment was written on an iPhone whilst procrastinating from work. Which is coding on a MacBook pro whilst checking the resulting website on an iPad Air today. I'm even using AirPods Pro to listen to music...

411111111111111··on Display brighter-than-white color on Apple devices
The discussion was about global ad impressions, which include desktop use and exclude devices with working adblockers.

Why are you suddenly quoting exaggerated mobile phone market share numbers in such a context?

411111111111111··on Display brighter-than-white color on Apple devices
Nobody said it's numerically few devices.

It's just a question of percentages, do you really want to implement something that increases the brightness of your advertisement on 2-5% of your global impressions?

Entirely different story if your advertisement is a high margin product sold on the american market, especially if it's appealing to teenagers/young adults. That'd probably be over 50% of impressions, though that's just me guessing the number.

411111111111111··on Display brighter-than-white color on Apple devices
That'd heavily depend on the target audience, safari's market share is tiny if it's global.

It should be pretty high if the target audience is US only and mainly the higher income brackets, however.
