3131s··on How to overcome Phone Addiction
I know a woman who managed to sell cocaine out of a taxi (in the US) for 8 years without being caught.

It's a great way to sell drugs because you can always claim that whatever is stashed in the backseat was left by one of your passengers.

3131s··on How to overcome Phone Addiction
Well, except when people start jumping from buildings.

I know two people, one of whom successfully jumped from the 3rd floor of a building and another that had to be restrained from doing so. It's a real risk, although I personally have done psychedelics many hundreds of times and never felt the urge to jump even when climbing trees, building exteriors, etc.

Grandstanding about transferring all his wealth for tax purposes under the guise of it being "charity", obnoxious attempts to man-in-the-middle most of India's internet connectivity, screwing over users with "privacy zuckering" that causes settings to revert, etc.

The joy of my life was seeing Zuckerberg getting absolutely owned on his own Facebook page by thousands and thousands of Indian people who wanted nothing to do with his money-grubbing initiatives.

Nah, I've always been terrible at RTS games but I'm still obsessed with them.

I'm also pretty far into creating a generative RTS and it's turning out well. Maybe you'll like it too!

3131s··on In study, acetaminophen makes risky moves seem less dangerous
Anecdotally I used to be less empathetic but I took some steps to change that long ago.

But, high pain tolerance would still describe me even after that point... I've had broken ribs, broken fingers and toes, broken hand and wrist, chipped teeth, broken nose, seriously infected abrasions, large boils (now these fucking hurt), torn labrum on left shoulder, surgery on right shoulder with a really uncomfortable elastomeric pump, a few minor head injuries, minor fracture in one foot, cigarette tattoos, high-speed bike crashes with no protective gear, a perplexing squishy fluid sac under the sole of my foot from sprinting, etc.

I still feel pain but I would have to imagine that a pain-sensitive person might not get up to the same stuff that I do. It really depends on the type of pain.

The two most excruciating were dengue fever and a couple bouts with moderately-sized kidney stones. Dengue was worse, definitely earning its local name here of "bone-break fever" due to the intense and constant aching. Near the end there is a characteristic rash, which is mercy compared to the first 3-4 days. The whole experience left me physically destroyed for months! I returned to lifting weights after I thought I had recovered, but my one-rep max lifts were halved on every single movement and it took another month to return to the level I was at before.

3131s··on Price increase on .io on January 21, 2021
What, did you expect a new lineage of humans to evolve separately there or something?

Of course "native" can be arbitrarily limited to mean 1000s or 10,000s of years, but even after slavery those people lived there for at least five or six generations. So from the perspective of the people being forcibly removed, getting their pet dogs gassed by the military, it really wouldn't fucking matter.

And the Wikipedia article says they're "native", which you explicitly claimed was not the case.

3131s··on 2020 had some significant silver linings
Agreed. The loss of plant and animal species is primarily driven by animal agriculture, which along with the welfare of the animals themselves is above every other concern for me.
3131s··on Price increase on .io on January 21, 2021
> BITO was uninhabited before it was settled by Europeans.

This is completely wrong. BIOT includes these islands where the native people were forcibly removed and the story is terrible.

3131s··on 2020 had some significant silver linings
> I would add that the Iranian nuclear deal is now being revived, breaking the power of militaristic hardliners in Iran

As far as I know Biden has not taken any step toward this so far, but many House Democrats are urging him to do so. At the same time though powerful lobbying interests are pushing for the deal to be renegotiated under stricter terms, so I wouldn't count our eggs too early.

More importantly, I would think this is entirely negated by the fact that we just murdered two of their country's most prominent public figures. Diplomatic relations might improve, but I have to imagine that a lot of Iranians would be radicalized by these events and not really care which particular administration is responsible ultimately. Trump might catch the blame, but these type of targeted killings in Iran of scientists and other civilians go back much further than just the last term.

3131s··on ‘YouTube recommendations are toxic,’ says dev who worked on the algorithm (2019)
I actually like conspiracy videos (for fun), but Youtube did something a few years back so that they are recommended with much less frequency.

Also to get a totally clean slate, which is still not perfect as you said, you have to delete subscriptions and likes as well as watch history. I've tried it a few times, but since I keep my subscriptions I always end up back on the same topics.

3131s··on ‘YouTube recommendations are toxic,’ says dev who worked on the algorithm (2019)
That's actually what prompted me to post this.

I don't know how Youtube's algorithms work internally, but lately the front page is just so broken that it's baffling. The sidebar recommendations are another discussion -- those are possibly more pernicious but at least not as obviously dysfunctional.

How is it possible to have the largest repository of video content in the world, yet Youtube is only able to recommend me the same videos over and over again (half of which I seen already or quickly clicked out of). There is also a simplistic list of recommended categories, which I would change if I could, and those never change either.

If the front page were just completely random, it would be better than it is now. If I could actually tell Youtube to show me videos with a low-to-moderate view count and a high upvote ratio, then that would be fabulous and I probably would encounter new subjects and ideas rather than getting stuck watching the same garbage over and over. I'll never let my future children spend even a second on Youtube, because the stuff that it recommends to kids is so asinine that it just makes me mad.

I really believe that collectively we are all much dumber because of the Youtube's pathetically bad algorithms.

It's harder to steal cars now too, which is how Cali's most successful bank robbers got away with it for a long time.

Well, there's always rubber-hose cryptanalysis. Currency might just not be that feasible in a totally lawless society.

3131s··on Stalking her daughter’s killers across Mexico, one by one
As someone who is from the US but lives in a poor country, it's hard to imagine what it would be like to take the already dire situations of place like this and then add in 2-3x the drug trafficking violence compared to the US.

Legalizing most recreational drugs around the world is absolutely imperative! If it is not done sooner than later then the largest drug trafficking organizations will be so entrenched that it may become impossible.

Many lives would be saved if these drugs could be purchased in consistent doses with standardized labeling and packaging.

3131s··on FTC Sues Facebook for Illegal Monopolization
This is pretty rich consider that people don't even hesitate to put your literal face on Facebook whenever they please.

The point is to move toward standards around social data and then force the big tech companies to allow each user to export their own data, quickly, in these interoperable formats.

3131s··on China is the greatest enemy to freedom – US intelligence chief
> *People have different views on what belongs here, but I think it's easy to see why users flagged this article. It's generic nationalistic flamebait, reporting on a statement by a political official, with no significant new information

This is reality, not "generic, nationalistic flamebait". It does not matter if the article is from the BBC, or that the statement comes from this particular Trumpist DNI John Ratcliffe, because the sentiment of "China is a threat" is much broader than one person and one article, and that's what people want to talk about -- various ideas tangential to the reporting and this particular story itself.

Of course for some topics you mods will dig up a "better" source and manipulate the rankings manually, but for others it's straight to flagging black hole... If you can't see what's "interesting" or "noteworthy" about these political topics from a hacker's perspective, that is your lack of imagination and the fault is not mine. Flagging allows the old guard here to plug their ears whenever an uncomfortable topic comes up. I sincerely think this platform would be better if topics that get tons of votes could not be killed so quickly.

Also if anyone really cares about the quality of discussion here, perhaps HN should actually achieve a sane technological solution for displaying a page with more than a few hundred comments. The platform itself is just flat out bad for in-depth discussions. Or give us some ways to sort, like by upvotes only (so I can complain about flagging less). Or actually comply with the GDPR, instead of sinking more time into your shadowy mod tooling.

The accounts of these people sound reasonably trustworthy but they're not alleging massive fraud, just problems at the polling place that led to overcounting.

3131s··on Former Israeli space security chief says aliens exist, humanity not ready
The other poster already tried to inform you, but this is not unprecedented. The USA government has been claiming the existence of aliens since the 1950s! Lots of notable people have claimed to know of extraterrestrial contact, not that I believe them.
