3131s··on As U.S. schools shuttered, student mental health cratered, survey finds
You both are pathetic. Go pay off your debt, dumbass, because it sounds like you're one step away from being one of the people that this complete idiot renewiltord is referring to.
3131s··on A salt monopoly could spike car accidents in the Midwest
What will make it tough is that our roads already get destroyed every winter without the help of spiked tires.

In MN the entire summer is filled with road construction already. I wouldn't be that thrilled about switching my tires 2x every year either.

3131s··on Loss of myelin is one of the major factors of age-related brain deterioration
I've gotten these OTC at pharmacies in Southeast Asia, but didn't take them because I look up every medicine that I get.
3131s··on HN front page ranked using only votes from early users (2009)
Not particularly useful because almost all the old timers are still looking at the same normal homepage that everybody else is.

Counting only votes from /new would be interesting.

3131s··on Narco Submarine Found in Spain
Not the cocaine as far as I know, but meth, heroin, and some others are produced here.

Cocaine is about 150-180$ a gram in Southeast Asia, whereas most other drugs are dirt cheap.

3131s··on Why we’re removing comments on most of Inquirer.com
Because people here wrap their offensively stupid opinions in polite language.
3131s··on Great Man-Made River
It seems to be struggling currently, but certainly it's already proven to be a resilient piece of infrastructure given the circumstances:

On 22 July during the 2011 Libyan civil war, one of the two plants making pipes for the project, the Brega Plant, was hit by a NATO air strike.[18] At a press conference on 26 July, NATO claimed that rockets had been fired from within the plant area, and that military material, including multiple rocket launchers, was stored there according to intelligence findings, presenting a photo showing a BM-21 MRL as an example.[19]

During the second Libyan civil war, lasting from 2014 to 2020, the water infrastructure suffered neglect and occasional breakdowns. As of July 2019, 101 of 479 wells on the western pipeline system had been dismantled.[20]

On 10 April 2020, a station controlling water flow to Tripoli and neighboring towns was seized by an unknown armed group. The flow of water was cut to over two million people as a result, and as such the attack was condemned by the United Nations on humanitarian grounds.[21]

3131s··on Hackers, Mason Jars, and the Psychedelic Science of DIY Shrooms
I would have assumed the opposite.

The pigs love to stick their thumb on the scale so that they can hit you with a more severe charge, so I'm sure they'd love it if your shrooms weigh 10x because of the water weight.

3131s··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs to travel the world, how did it go?
It can be a huge hassle if you are independently employed, even in a country with lax visa requirements.
3131s··on Hertz, the original meme stock, is turning out to be worthless
I had some coins in a smaller exchange that went down, as in at least 3-4 bitcoins that were left over in account. Maybe it's worth checking on?
3131s··on Ask HN: Do you create music? let's hear it
Nice, the vocalist from Pyrrhon and Seputus is with you guys! I like your band's style, although I usually only listen to BDM.

I'm working on the guitar parts for a BDM album, but nothing to show so far.

3131s··on Bay Area drug kingpins lured low-level dealers, promising cheap rent (2020)
Yep, best bet is to check your state's weed laws and stay under an amount where the penalty is not too severe. If you have no priors and get caught with less than 1-2 lbs in a lot of states, any felony possession charges will be cleared after serving a year on probation.

Whatever you are doing, make sure that you can do the time you might get and don't panic when you get raided.

3131s··on Bay Area drug kingpins lured low-level dealers, promising cheap rent (2020)
The only drug dealers not making any money are the ones that are born into poverty and have to come up with no money from the street level.

Once you can put together at least a few thousand for a re-up you will make more than minimum wage, and you can double your money in a week or two with cocaine and harder drugs. It's easy to make 2k a week selling just eight balls and grams of cocaine if you know the right people on both ends of the equation.

But of course it's only easy until you get raided or someone else decides to test you! The cops will rob you too in the US. One friend lost two lbs of weed and another got jacked a few times for larger amounts of coke by the police. It's a real calamity and drug legalization is the only solution.

3131s··on NFTs Are a Dangerous Trap
You should try looking up what an "externality" is again, because this is almost a canonical example of one.
3131s··on Californians aren’t leaving the state en masse but are leaving San Francisco
Public intoxication and substance abuse: Decriminalizing drugs and letting people get as intoxicated as they want is not a responsible approach.

You won't stop me or anyone else with your nanny-state laws. It's easy to get bricks in Cali, good luck!

3131s··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
It's not the same group of people, not entirely at least.

3131s··on Beyond Meat signs global supply deals with McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut
There's no love here, you're killing the animal. Don't delude yourself.
3131s··on Beyond Meat signs global supply deals with McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut
The Chinese are big on this "mock" meat too... which as a vegetarian I almost always find disgusting. Just give me legumes, nuts, seeds, mushrooms, leaves, roots, etc.

Tofu and seitan are about the only processed foods that I ever eat.

3131s··on Beyond Meat signs global supply deals with McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut
Weak argument about rodents getting ground up in combines -- almost all cattle in the US are crop-fed, so it's the same thing happening to a much greater extent with meat consumption.
3131s··on Show HN: A Native Tiling Window Manager for Windows 10, Inspired by I3wm
Can floated windows in i3 be snapped to somewhere on the screen in any way?

I use i3 but don't know of any way to do this.

3131s··on Google admits Kubernetes container tech is too complex
What was your use case?
3131s··on The road to electric is filled with tiny cars
> But if everyone had one, then stuck in traffic again.

Not if the lanes, or the rules for existing lanes, change somewhat.

I love these small cars and see them all around where I live, some even smaller than the modern tuk tuks that we get from China.

I have looked online at some cool designs I've seen and most are in the $1000-$1500 range new. That sure beats a 2000+ lbs hunk of metal that is so prohibitively expensive to buy, maintain, refuel, and store that only 1/3 of Americans actually own a car, while living in the land of highways and sprawl.

3131s··on Is soy a key driver of deforestation?
We have enough insight into the supply chain to know that the block of tofu is not the driver of the problem.

Soybeans have a high protein yield, hence why they're grown for feed. The plant fixates nitrogen as alluded to above. Soy is a complete protein, albeit with an amino acid profile that is not quite as similar to human muscle tissue as some meat.

It is a miracle plant! Soybeans are easy to prepare and taste fantastic, and can form the core of a healthy diet.

3131s··on We haven’t seen a quarter of known bee species since the 1990s
> * Because if you want to make a living you either have to do something that people are asking for, or you have to convince people that they should be asking for. If the world doesn’t see taxonomists’ worth on their own, it is up to them to educate us if they want to keep their jobs.*

No, no. The excuse for ignorance is not to blame the only people that have actually worked toward solutions to the current, ongoing extinction event. People that devote their lives to entomology, biology, ecology, and related fields have already done their part.

Endless propaganda and reality distortion has made everyone not care about plants and animals. This along with similar corporate and governmental mindfucking initiatives has made everyone go crazy.

3131s··on The road to electric is filled with tiny cars
What's interesting is that society continues to make the deadly mistake of being hauled around by over-powered, over-sized, gas-guzzling monstrosities while obviously better solutions exist.
3131s··on Who are the culture heroes of today?
That's not mainstream, it's just moron fodder that Youtube recommends to young white males. That list is a reflection of cultural decay, a vacuum where charlatans consume the empty intellectual space.
3131s··on California State Legislator Introduces Bill to Decriminalize Psychedelics
No drug dealer wants to sell psychedelics because your customers will act like morons, get arrested, and then snitch on you in their panicked, delirious state. I've seen it happen many times.

A single sheet goes for about 400$ in most places if you have good connections, or at least it used to. That's 100 doses, which is going to take a lot longer to run through compared a similar amount of weed, for example. So all around it's bad business, but somebody like Petaluma Al was probably making a decent living.

3131s··on I am a heroin user. I do not have a drug problem
Yeah, I've done heroin, morphine, oxycodone, opium, and a few others in the past and never felt any pull to do them.

But I love cocaine, psychedelics, and weed though, and I have been somewhat addicted to all three at different times in my life. I specifically wouldn't ever get drunk if I didn't have weed to go with it, as that's the only way to make alcohol any fun for me.

3131s··on I am a heroin user. I do not have a drug problem
I would hope people here recognize that legalization together with smart regulation is far preferable to decriminalization.
