3131s··on Jack Dorsey is giving Andrew Yang $5M to build the case for a basic income
The point is to compensate these vital workers properly and give them some leverage in negotiations with their employer. That's what a UBI does, it makes the life of your fruit-picking wage slave a little more bearable.
3131s··on Mount Everest is visible from Kathmandu for first time in living memory
Cockroaches eat almost anything, like rotting wood, glue, toothpaste, dead things, food waste, etc.

And they can also go about a month without eating anything.

3131s··on Effects of Exercise on Cognitive Performance with ADHD
You have to find something that you genuinely enjoy doing, there's no other way.
3131s··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
Well, Facebook gets away with absolute murder in regard to copyrighted infringement (especially in the non-English parts of the site) so it's a good fit.
3131s··on James Damore and three others end Google suit
Neoliberals do this, but otherwise most liberals have no love for China. In this case though I'd suggest that you blame Donald Trump for those two deaths, rather than the Chinese government.
3131s··on Ask HN: Name one idea that changed your life
It does depend on the medium though, for example painting is pretty forgiving while glass blowing is not at all.

3131s··on Japan to Draw Up UFO Encounter Protocols After U.S. Footage
There are images and videos of the Hangzhou UFO:

This has clips from multiple videos:

The story has at least been vetted by ABC News, who reported that this sighting caused the Xiaoshan Airport in Hangzhou to shut down.

Definitely check out the documentary "Mirage Men" mentioned by the parent comment.
3131s··on Ask HN: Advice for passing a FAANG background check with a criminal history
What OP did is only extremist in a normative sense. The real extremists are the ones butchering animals because they're too selfish to eat something else.
3131s··on Ask HN: Advice for passing a FAANG background check with a criminal history
> I was fed the same line of shit by courts.

Hmm... when I was a lot younger I got charged with a felony (burglary) that was then downgraded to a misdemeanor (breaking and entering), and I was told that it would disappear from my record completely when I turned 18. Does anyone know if that's true? I always figured that some kind of deeper background check would uncover it.

3131s··on Hourly 4-second sprints prevent impairment of postprandial fat metabolism
But they do... lots of teams have stationary bikes on the sidelines. No athlete would sit motionless for 12 minutes in the middle of a competition, not too mention that players would go through a much longer warm up before the game.

But I agree that going full force very briefly on a stationary bike with no warmup is probably fine for most people.

3131s··on Hourly 4-second sprints prevent impairment of postprandial fat metabolism
Static stretching should be avoided at the beginning of a workout.

I had assumed this was about sprinting in the sense of running as fast as possible, which would be absolutely insane to do without a warmup. I take around 20 minutes to warm up for sprinting, doing very specific exercises to prepare.

On a stationary bike though, because the range of motion is much more controlled, I can see it being a little less of an issue.

3131s··on U.S. Economy Shrinks at 4.8% Pace, Signaling Start of Recession
I totally agree with you.

It seems like no one is understanding your point... yes, it's an absolutely terrible idea for people to go back to work right now, but if it's literally between that and going hungry (because you know your government won't do shit to help you), then it's no surprise that some people will want to go back to work out of sheer necessity. In fact I'd be shocked if most of these Silicon Valley tools would come to any different conclusion if they were actually in the same boat.

3131s··on U.S. Economy Shrinks at 4.8% Pace, Signaling Start of Recession
You should rethink that. It's the poverty that these kids and everybody else will be subjected to that will have a much larger impact. If every one of these kids were sitting at home in a financially secure household, I guarantee you they'd all be fine.
3131s··on Plan9 – A Distributed Operating System
How about just removing the flagging feature? It's annoying that a few people can derail a discussion on an article that many others have upvoted.

Also, what happened to the "vouch" button?

3131s··on Plan9 – A Distributed Operating System
If that's how it's supposed to work, I'll start flagging every single MacOS and Windows related post I see on HN.

I actually found this because about once a week I search for all the Wikipedia articles that get posted on HN. I usually open most of the ones with multiple upvotes if I haven't seen them before.

3131s··on The pandemic is bringing us closer to our robot takeout future
I guess you'd have stuff colliding in mid-air and crashing to the ground, but it did occur to me that just launching stuff into the air with very precise cannons and catching it in nets would be far cheaper than a system of tubes.

Too bad earth's gravity isn't a little different, then it might be more feasible!

3131s··on Europe’s cities are making less room for cars after coronavirus
I really wonder what fantasy world you live in where the elites are just clamouring to institute a UBI.

So far only a single congressperson that I am aware of has advocated for it, and that's Ilhan Omar, who is a hero of mine.

Why is it impossible to have a UBI alongside other nice things? What better proposal do you have to reduce wealth inequality?

3131s··on 'Expert Twitter' Only Goes So Far – Bring Back Blogs
> Faced with this, authors are forced to either simplify their ideas or spread them out across tweets.

Or not use Twitter at all.

3131s··on Microsoft Word now flags double spaces after a period as errors
It's just how HTML is rendered, you'll never know whether OP used 1 or 2 spaces in that comment.
3131s··on Vercel, formerly Zeit, raises $21M Series A
It's one day later now, and "Vercel" is still a stupid name!
3131s··on On WD Red NAS Drives
According to this, Toshiba has been doing the same thing...

3131s··on What is interesting about Factorio
This is what I do too, either watch videos of other people playing new games or play the old games that I already know and love (Diablo, Alpha Centauri, Starcraft, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Minesweeper, etc.).
3131s··on Fed to buy junk bonds, lend to states in fresh virus support
So many obvious examples, but since up thread people are using the "teach a man to fish" idea, let's go with that... you are now the captain of a fishing boat!

So what happens when, in order to cover expenses while you're quarantined for a few months, you've sold your fishing boat, fishing poles, life vests, etc.? Your fishing boat might have been turned into scrap metal by the time you can resume working, and you've already spent all the money in the interim (you sold it for cheap because at the time everyone else was selling their fishing boats for the same reason). That's why life won't necessarily return to normal when this is over.

3131s··on MIT to no longer consider SAT subject tests in admissions decisions
No one even told us at my school that the PSAT would count for national merit scholarships, which ended up saving me $20,000 on university tuition over four years.
3131s··on Has the bidet's time in North America finally arrived?
An effective bum gun sprays water with a lot of force. There's a certain way to aim it (to be specific, first near your anus and then circle outwards) that completely removes all feces in just a few seconds.

I have tested the cleanliness with paper, but after 6 years now I never need any paper. Unless your ass is really hairy there won't be as much residual wetness as you'd expect and air drying for a moment is enough.

3131s··on What If Andrew Yang Was Right?
It's literally not a UBI, did you not see the OP spell that out?

Means-tested welfare is misaligned with productivity because the money stops coming once you make more. A UBI is a more pragmatic, efficient approach to reducing wealth inequality.

3131s··on NBA suspends season over the coronavirus after player tests positive
The original XFL had some different rules around certain types of hits, and it also emphasized the players' personas more by letting them choose the names on their jerseys, trash talk, take their helmet off for celebrations, etc. It was and is still run by the same people behind WWE.

Now I take it they're moving in a different direction. Is there generally more or less concern for player safety in the XFL now, compared to the NFL?

3131s··on Engineered healthier sugar that tastes good
Agreed, and I'm more curious anyways about the numerous fruits that have this same effect of increasing the perception of sweetness.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dioscoreophyllum_volkensii

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentadiplandra

"The fruit contains monellin, an intensely sweet protein with potential use as a sugar replacement. For humans, monellin is 100,000 times sweeter than sucrose on a molar basis and around 3,000 times on a weight basis."
