0xcafecafe··on France grants citizenship to 12,000 Covid frontline workers
I doubt. Forget citizenship, the US is not processing permanent residency for its employment based applicants, many of which are MDs working in hospitals. The backlog spans more than a decade and if the applicant passes away, their family is subject to self deportation. The backlog is due to antiquated per country caps which result in prolonged waiting times for populous countries (I am personally waiting for the last 11 years). Forget citizenship, forget changing legislation to give them green cards faster, the agency (uscis) is poised to waste 100,000 of such green cards this year (which cannot be recaptured without legislation next year). These numbers would otherwise be useful for applications whose petitions were approved up to 2013. Truly dystopian.

0xcafecafe··on Children are spoofing Covid-19 tests with soft drinks
My 3 year old hates sweets. Ice-cream, cakes and chocolates/candy are a hard no. So much so that he cried once my wife tricked him into tasting ice-cream. OTOH he loves ripe sweet tasting fruits so it is not aversion to sweet taste. We'll see how long this lasts...
0xcafecafe··on India bans MasterCard from adding new customers
Right now yes. However any neighboring country with a recent coup doesn't fill you with confidence.
0xcafecafe··on LiveLeak shuts down after 15 years online
Maybe you are right about youtube in context of Indian covid. However, the coverage elsewhere in mainstream has been quite graphic in the current wave.
0xcafecafe··on Tracking the WhatsApp habits of random smartphones
That signal move backfired for me. Before it was just whatsapp. Now with some folks from my generation moving to signal and the older folks from the parent's generation staying with whatsapp, I have had to maintain presence across 2 chat applications.
0xcafecafe··on European Super League: Premier League ‘big six’ sign up to competition
“National government may have limited formal powers to stop any super league. But local government may have more, stronger and long forgotten powers. Football Clubs use the name of their towns and cities with the permission of the local council. If Liverpool Council decides it no longer wants Liverpool FC to bear its name, then they could withdraw that right. The club could still exist and play in the new ESL but call itself something else (Red Mersey?) but they could no longer call itself Liverpool. That would be an utterly extraordinary move but maybe even the threat would be something.”

Interesting idea

0xcafecafe··on Pfizer 91% effective in updated data, protective against South African variant
I chose to get Pfizer for the exact same reason. If it was able to get the same effectiveness as Moderna with lesser mRNA it seemed to be an efficient choice (as a programmer :))
0xcafecafe··on Suez Canal says traffic in channel resumes after stranded ship refloated
I wonder why the previous link to track it is not working again. Would have been cool to see it navigating the canal:

0xcafecafe··on Ever Given Container Ship Fan Fiction
Does this forum have a "NSFW" tag? If so, this hilarious post needs it
0xcafecafe··on Why the Wuhan lab leak theory shouldn't be dismissed
While the headline talks about covid, I found other bits of the article scary. For instance the supposed lax handling of pathogens like smallpox. While I would trust the worldwide scientific community for covid origin theories, I cannot look past the egregious safety violations reported in the article (if true).
0xcafecafe··on GitHub, fuck your name change
Amazing comment, thank you
0xcafecafe··on Ask HN: What is the most complex concept you understand?
>Being able to explain it in 5 minutes doesn't necessarily mean it's not complex.

I second this. Evolutionary biology is a complex topic. But all it took for me to understand the basics of it was the Carl Sagan video about the japanese crabs.

0xcafecafe··on Beyond Meat signs global supply deals with McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut
Most of the grains we eat are grass so we can technically eat grass.
0xcafecafe··on How Etsy Prepared for Historic Volumes of Holiday Traffic in 2020
I ordered quite a few items from etsy over the holidays and all by logging in with Google on my android phone
0xcafecafe··on Korean Air, Asiana to ground Boeing 777 after engine incident
This might be due to a car being a more common retail purchase compared to a plane. Airlines might want to customize their plane for the usage and different engines might provide different benefits.
0xcafecafe··on Biomarker of Alzheimer's found to be regulated by sleep cycles
I wonder if there are studies linking this disease to occupations which routinely disturb ones circadian rhythm like air travel.
0xcafecafe··on YouTube will now show ads on all videos even if creators don’t want them
It's worse when you are trying to put a soothing music to put your baby to sleep and it starts with a loud ad which wakes her up. Or now that she is a toddler, her nursery rhyme videos have political campaign ads in the middle of the song.
0xcafecafe··on YouTube will now show ads on all videos even if creators don’t want them
I don't even mind ads before videos however the current way ads are being shown is pathetic and ruins the experience. My toddler likes to watch 15 mins of cocomelon while drinking milk and ads show up every few mins in the middle of the nursery rhyme playing. It is extremely infuriating.
0xcafecafe··on Oregon becomes first U.S. state to decriminalize possession of all drugs
So possession is decriminalized but what about sale and distribution? Also is this in direct conflict with federal law prohibiting the same?
0xcafecafe··on Traits of good remote leaders
I have bookmarked a javascript snippet which a friend wrote to enable better text reading experience on such websites. It just hides all images in the page.
0xcafecafe··on Police-issued "courtesy cards" help friends and family out of minor infractions
Wow. I wonder if there is an equivalent of this sticker for other states.
0xcafecafe··on Trump's favorite tech company could win TikTok
The question then is will Oracle kill TikTok like Solaris?
0xcafecafe··on Antibody tests show what parts of NYC were hit hardest
That is a co-incidence due the name Corona meaning crown in Latin as well as Spanish along with the zip code being populated with folks presumably in sectors where WFH is not possible.

"From corona (“crown-like circle of light appearing around the sun”) +‎ virus.[1][2] Corona is derived from Latin corōna (“garland, wreath; crown”), from Ancient Greek κορώνη (korṓnē, “something curved; curved stern of a ship; end, point, tip”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to bend, turn”). The name refers to the characteristic appearance of its virions by electron microscopy, which have a fringe of surface projections creating an image reminiscent of a solar corona.[3] Compare the former genus name Coronavirus."

0xcafecafe··on Boeing 747s receive software updates over floppy disks
Looks like a lot of them are cargo operators.
0xcafecafe··on What is Jio, and why are tech’s biggest players suddenly obsessed with it?
They are corrupt but most corrupt? Please read up on the Nehru-Gandhi family. I agree that family is shady but calling it the most corrupt is a hyperbole.
0xcafecafe··on What is Jio, and why are tech’s biggest players suddenly obsessed with it?
Honestly the reason people flee is due to the lack of opportunities as a result of the existing bureaucracy. You are conflating the cause of the inefficiency and one of the ways of getting around it. Reliance and Dhirubhai just showed how to navigate around it. The bureaucracy is a relic of the colonial past and it belongs in a museum.

And I write this as an honest, maybe smart Indian sitting outside India.

0xcafecafe··on Formula 1 2020: The secret aerodynamicist – are capes the key?
I agree with your general sentiment. I have stopped watching lately but the last great season I remember was the one when Lewis Hamilton won the championship in the last corner of the last race over Felipe Massa due to some other driver not finishing. I think it was in the late 00s.
0xcafecafe··on Uber CEO Wants to Shift More Engineering Jobs to India, Sparking Internal Debate
Can you elaborate why that statement is incorrect?

If B/G is high, G/B is low. But if P is a very high number G/B * P must be a decently high number as well.

0xcafecafe··on Uber CEO Wants to Shift More Engineering Jobs to India, Sparking Internal Debate
Sure, scammers are abound and the bad to good ratio is pretty high but due to the population size, the number of good developers is high as well.
0xcafecafe··on Uber CEO Wants to Shift More Engineering Jobs to India, Sparking Internal Debate
I don't think it is "way less". 80K USD converts to 5,979K INR which is about the ballpark estimate some of the senior engineers I know make in India (one of them is working for the Western European company btw).

One of the reasons to move to India would be the availability of talent even if it is at comparable cost. Companies like to scale and lack of talent is a risk they want to mitigate.
