0xcafecafe··on A Small Telescope That Surprised Me
Thank you for the reply. Yes, I learned what I had to learn from going to astronomy gatherings and absorbing what the folks worked with. A store like what you describe would be awesome in today's day and age.

On a side note, I have an 8'' dobsonian and people think I might be getting magnified views of DSOs with that by default. I have to explain about eyepieces to them to clear that out.

0xcafecafe··on A Small Telescope That Surprised Me
If you are buying think through whether you want a wider field of view (S30 series) or more details (S50 series). S30 might be a better bet for amateur viewing.
0xcafecafe··on FiveThirtyEight articles on the Internet Archive
They had Trump 1/3 and Clinton 2/3 IIRC. That was a bigger spread. I remember Nate Silver saying that is what 1/3 probability looks like later.
0xcafecafe··on Meta in row after workers who saw smart glasses users having sex lose jobs
I have 2 kids in single digit ages (1 under 5). I bought meta gen 2 last month and I cannot describe how many sweet moments I have captured. My kid loves to sing while playing with dolls and stops as soon as I flip my phone out to record.
0xcafecafe··on Trump's global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court
I ordered a soccer team jersey from UK which cost $100. I had to shell out $75 in tariffs. So yes while what you are saying might apply to businesses, there is a real cost paid by consumers as well.
0xcafecafe··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars
That is interesting. Thanks for sharing I was interested in trying out a Porsche. Do the oil changes and other maintenance items cost significantly more than other makers?
0xcafecafe··on How well do you know C++ auto type deduction?
Another place where auto can be useful is to handle cases where the function signature changes without making changes at the calling site. An explicitly typed var would need changing or worse, can work with some potential hidden bugs due to implicit type conversion.
0xcafecafe··on Tesla influencers tried coast-to-coast self-driving, hit debris before 60 miles
Any software that works 90% or even 99% of the time is not safe software especially when it has to be used to operate machines with deadly power.
0xcafecafe··on U.S. investors, Trump close in on TikTok deal with China
TikTok is banned in India. OracleTok might not be.. So that's a lot of potential users.
0xcafecafe··on 14 Killed in anti-government protests in Nepal
Sure it might have been unpopular and a silly cause. However that didn't stop the government from invoking the emergencies act and cracking down with impunity. There were even cases of finances being frozen.

0xcafecafe··on Win, lose, or draw: trends in English football match results
Most of the time unless your club is playing, you'd root for a draw in games between top teams for the rivals to drop points. So rooting for a draw is more exciting for a Liverpool fan watching an Arsenal City game for instance.
0xcafecafe··on Two new PebbleOS watches
I don't use my watch for running (using a 7 year old Fitbit versa). However, I do keep it on the entire day unless it is charging. I was curious what the weight of the Time 2 was going to be (I don't see it in the specs). I just wanted to compare the weight of it to my existing device. Thanks!
0xcafecafe··on After 120 years, Yellowstone bison are a single breeding population
Bacteria still outweigh us a thousand to one and that's not counting those already in our bodies is a great alt-text as well.
0xcafecafe··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
Thank you!
0xcafecafe··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
I am interested in learning piano myself having just gotten one for my kid. Did you learn it by yourself? If so any resources you can point in my direction? Thanks!
0xcafecafe··on Intel's Immiseration
Yes. I have bare minimum s/w on the windows 11 that came with it.
0xcafecafe··on Intel's Immiseration
Anecdata here but I bought a thinkpad T14 in 2022. My colleague bought the same at the same time. We both have identical machines except for me opting for an intel processor and him picking an AMD. My laptop has heating issues and terrible battery life. His lasts an entire day and no heating issues. Forums research shows others in the same timeframe are facing the same issue as me so it is entirely Intel related.
0xcafecafe··on The CrowdStrike file that broke everything was full of null characters?
They could even have done slow rollouts. Roll it out to a geographical region and wait an hour or so before deploying elsewhere.

0xcafecafe··on Show HN: CarCheck – Car Buying Checklist App
I was seriously considering one last year and the quality control issues threw me off. The fact that you need to go through a long checklist to take delivery of a new car is mentally exhausting (example here: https://teslaprep.glideapp.io/dl/d0a5f4). Not to mention the suspension issues that were making the news (whompy wheels).
0xcafecafe··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
Italy is not shown in the forecast zone but pics are surfacing from northern parts of it. Does that mean there is hope for southern US?
0xcafecafe··on The Google employees who created transformers
Isn't some of it have to do with it being a self selecting sample? If you come to America to study, you were a good student in your resident country leading to more chances of success than the average local citizen. Their children might be smarter on average. Alternatively if you are coming fleeing persecutions you are enterprising enough to set up something for your children. That hard work inculcates a sort of work ethic in such children which in turn sets them up for success. Speaking from experience as an immigrant myself.
0xcafecafe··on The Google employees who created transformers
Among other things (like cloud for instance). I always think Sundar is the Steve Ballmer of Google.
0xcafecafe··on HP CEO: "Our long-term objective is to make printing a subscription."
Thanks
0xcafecafe··on HP CEO: "Our long-term objective is to make printing a subscription."
Thanks, will consider it then.
0xcafecafe··on HP CEO: "Our long-term objective is to make printing a subscription."
Thank you for the reply
0xcafecafe··on HP CEO: "Our long-term objective is to make printing a subscription."
Any issues with ink getting clogged? I was hearing such cases for ecotank variants. My use-case is infrequent printing
0xcafecafe··on Culture Change at Google
IMO I felt that battle was lost couple of years back when my wife was pregnant with our youngest. We were looking for CDC guidelines on covid booster for expectant mothers. The website mentions "pregnant people". That's when I felt discourse is evolving to cater to the edge cases.

0xcafecafe··on Hertz to sell 20k EVs in shift back to gas-powered cars
I am not a youtuber or the media. I was seriously thinking about buying a model y late last year so borrowed a model 3 and a y from friends to test it out. I found it distracting TBH.

Not to mention the suspension issues (google "tesla whompy wheels"). After reading that junked the idea of buying it.

0xcafecafe··on Hertz to sell 20k EVs in shift back to gas-powered cars
That screen is seriously distracting and the worst thing is you have to look at it even to check your speed. There is absolutely 0 information displayed behind the steering wheel. I always wonder how did this get approved.
