0mp··on Using FreeBSD to make self-hosting fun again
According to repology.org, FreeBSD is the 4th largest package repository in the open-source world.
0mp··on Medieval
Teenage Engineering gear is not meant to last. It is an illusion created by how their product looks like and how it is marketed. Once the warranty expires, you won't be able to repair products like TX-6. I've gotten bitten by that myself. TE does not really provide much support to its users to help them maintain and repair this expensive gear.

0mp··on Not knowing the /proc file system
Hyperfine is a really nice tool for this kind of benchmarking.
0mp··on ZFS for Dummies
The defaults are absolutely sane. I've been using FreeBSD with root on ZFS on all sorts of workstations and laptops for many years now. It's always run just fine, even on cheap laptops with 2 GB of RAM.
0mp··on DTrace-on-Windows
It probably helps that OpenDTrace has a published specification that you can use to not only to reimplement bits of DTrace from scratch but also to agree on a common behavior across many operating systems: https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/techreports/UCAM-CL-TR-924.pdf
0mp··on DTrace-on-Windows
It's pretty cool to see it forked off the OpenDTrace repository on GitHub.
0mp··on Explaining top(1) on FreeBSD
This may not be the answer you are looking for, but OccamBSD seems to be a way to produce a minimal image for use in FreeBSD jails, FreeBSD bhyve and Xen: https://github.com/michaeldexter/occambsd
0mp··on FreeBSD switches the default root shell from csh to sh
Those are not part of the base system.
0mp··on FreeBSD Audio
There is an interesting comment to this article on Lobsters: https://lobste.rs/s/moflv5/freebsd_audio_from_perspective_ha...
0mp··on Implement unprivileged chroot
The commit message does not mention any MFC timeline [1] so this feature is not planned to be merged back into existing stable branches. In other words, the first release with this feature is going to be FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE.

[1]: Also, you may look for the commit hash (a40cf4175c90142442d0c6515f6c83956336699) at https://mfc.kernelnomicon.org/ to see the back-porting status.

0mp··on Compare AsciiDoc and Markdown
FreeBSD has recently switched from DocBook to AsciiDoc for its documentation: https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/fdp-primer/asciidoctor-pri...

Markdown was also an option but it was missing too many features for a documentation set of this size.

0mp··on One week of Libera Chat
It's incredible how fast the whole transition is happening. I'm really grateful to the Libera Chat team for creating a space for the communities to move to. Amazing job!
0mp··on Shelljs – Portable Unix shell commands for Node.js
There is also Modernish, which is a library for writing portable shell scripts and it seems to support all kinds of different versions of shells across a variety of operating systems. It really takes care of all the quirks and bugs every platform has.

0mp··on How to navigate directories faster with Bash (2015)
I use (and develop) `goat`. It's like a shortcut manager for aliases for directories you go to often. And a way to make "cd ...." work for any number of dots.

0mp··on Organizations announced for Google Summer of Code 2021
Ach, great to see FreeBSD once again on the list.
0mp··on Open source projects should run office hours
FreeBSD runs office hours pretty regularly now.

https://wiki.freebsd.org/OfficeHours

0mp··on FreeBSD 13.0 Beta1 Now Available
I'm running FreeBSD on T480 and after I configured the audio backend in Firefox (one variable in about:config) and the webcamd driver (2 lines in rc.conf) I can do video calls just fine. Both Jitsi and Zoom work as expected.
0mp··on eBPF Is Awesome
You may try out generic eBPF outside of Linux: https://github.com/generic-ebpf/generic-ebpf
0mp··on It used to be simpler to teach Unix
"The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System" is a great book I highly recommend.
0mp··on Entr: Rerun your build when files change
entr is cross-platform and utilizes the best of the platforms it runs on.

Also, the docs are explaining the problems with inotify: http://eradman.com/entrproject/

0mp··on Entr: Rerun your build when files change
entr is a great too, I use it all the time to automate various little things when I'm developing. The coolest part that it works in every environment I care about, which is FreeBSD, Linux, and macOS.
0mp··on FreeBSD 11.4
Heads-up: Nix is on its way to start working on FreeBSD: https://github.com/0mp/freebsd-ports-nix
0mp··on FreeBSD 11.4
I'm also using etcupdate. It's also the default for beinstall(8), a very nice tool to install updates into a separate boot environment.
0mp··on Help Take the Fight to COVID-19 with BOINC and Folding@Home
There is a FreeBSD port of the FAH client: http://freshports.org/biology/linux-foldingathome

The installation is as simple as "cd /usr/ports/biology/linux-foldingathome && make install".

0mp··on Remembering When Only Barbarians Drank Milk
TFW the button to consent to tracking on Atlas Obscura is just "javascript:void(0)". This is not how it's supposed to be done, right?
0mp··on Ask HN: Anyone moved to PC-BSD (TrueOS) from macOS?
It's worth mentioning that TrueOS is a rolling-release based on the FreeBSD bleeding-edge CURRENT branch. As a result the hardware support is still better than in the supported FreeBSD releases (10.3 and 11.0).
0mp··on Txti – Fast web pages for everybody
https://github.com/x3nu/CLItexties is a CLI for Txti.
0mp··on Google Site Search will be completely shut down by April 1, 2018
It's happening right now: https://duckduckgo.com/search_box
0mp··on The web sucks if you have a slow connection
There is a project called txti which provides a free hosting for a simple websites edited in Markdown: http://txti.es

The idea is to make the content available to all the web users as the fast connection is not as common as we might think.
