zz865··on Tech investors can’t get enough of Europe’s fizzing startup scene
I thought fizz means eventually to fizzle out and disappear.
zz865··on Slow Money Movement
Seems like Kiva to give 0% loans but for US organic farmers.
zz865··on Japan’s curiously quiescent inflation rate
They've been doing that for 30 years, which is one of the reasons the debt-GDP ratio is huge.
zz865··on Ted Nordhouse: How green activists mislead and hold back progress
> In fairness to climate protestors/activists, which developed nation has really taken any significant strides in the past 10-20 years?

Europe and USA have both actively reduced emissions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Agreement#/media/File:Pe...

zz865··on Ted Nordhouse: How green activists mislead and hold back progress
The other problem with always angry protesters is that the list is endless, so as soon as something gets fixed, the next day there is just another protest for something else.
zz865··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs without anything planned. How did it go?
I had the same experience. The other part is without a team you have to do every single low level task, which takes a lot of time you didn't really think about before.
zz865··on Functorio
Nice blog post, but:

> You might have heard people say that functional programming is more academic, and real engineering is done in imperative style.

Real Engineering is done in imperative style. There are very very few projects done in pure functional style. Sure it can be possible, there are always a few FP projects sprinkled around eg Spark has done great. But FP really is a niche specialty. It makes me think it just isn't the right tool for the job.

zz865··on Adele gets Spotify to take shuffle button off all album pages
I'd love a great way to listen to a playlist albums.

I think Ozzy said it best when he said when you bought a record usually there were often some songs you didn't like, but after listening to the album a few times they became some of your favorites.

zz865··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
I think this is dumb. But I also know the vast majority of people are very different to HN devs, and MS could make a lot of revenue with this.
zz865··on The Greedy Doctor Problem
Or even better pay nothing and get a government run system that is smart enough to figure out what is important and what is wasteful.
zz865··on Solar-driven water splitting at 13.8% solar-to-hydrogen efficiency
One big electricity storage problem is seasonal - eg cold sunless winters. Eg batteries are great for daytime charging your car - but they aren't great for storing up a whole summer's worth of energy to burn in the winter. Hydrogen could do that.
zz865··on Ephemeral Postgres Databases
https://www.testcontainers.org/ has docker containers for this (for Java only?).
zz865··on Ask HN: What's the quickest way to get something online?
A single text file? github or similar
zz865··on Ask HN: Tech-savvy parents, what are the gadget rules for your kids?
> Their mom is more strict with phone time on them but they watch unlimited TV. I limit TV and let them have unlimited phone time.

Lol me too.

zz865··on Office 2000 is good to go
until its amended then becomes new_quarterly_sales_figures_final_v2_2002_Q2_3_final_v3.xls
zz865··on Java Virtual Threads Preview
You can do that now already though, the main expense is 1mb of memory for stack.
zz865··on Java Virtual Threads Preview
I was going to say with modern PCs this is kinda redundant now, but its still a language of small devices too, where it'll be welcome.
zz865··on I write a parenting advice column (or how I became famous in my neighborhood)
Yeah and dont underestimate party schools. Some of my happiest friends have a big network of good friends they met while having a good time in college.
zz865··on I write a parenting advice column (or how I became famous in my neighborhood)
Wow its a 1999 paper on 1976 grads, not sure how well the lessons continue.
zz865··on I write a parenting advice column (or how I became famous in my neighborhood)
Lol not really, I'd still choose it. The problem is I'm just another immigrant and I dont understand the fascination with rankings here, esp when I'm surrounded by tiger parents who work their kids every day to get them into Harvard. Maybe its worth it? Its difficult to tell.
zz865··on I write a parenting advice column (or how I became famous in my neighborhood)
Thanks, that's an interesting paper:

> We find that students who attended more selective colleges do not earn more than other students who were accepted and rejected by comparable schools but attended less selective colleges. However, the average tuition charged by the school is significantly related to the students’ subsequent earnings. Indeed, we find a substantial internal rate of return from attending a more costly college. Lastly, the payoff to attending an elite college appears to be greater for students from more disadvantaged family backgrounds.

Sure everyone is going to pick Harvard over Davidson but would you pick Cornell over Georgia Tech?
zz865··on California plans to turn the screws on NIMBY cities
It certainly helps to make housing more affordable.
zz865··on Corded headphones are making an unexpected return
Can we get the headphone sockets back please?
zz865··on I write a parenting advice column (or how I became famous in my neighborhood)
Are Ivy league universities worth it for undergrad? I get his point that high pressure childhood and aggressive parenting isn't the best way to educate children - but then he sent his kids to Harvard where most of the people there are just like that, care more about prestige rather than learning.
zz865··on YAML: It's Time to Move On
TOML looks good. I'd rather it be call the ini standard but.
zz865··on California plans to turn the screws on NIMBY cities
If it encourages them to downsize from their family home after their children have moved out, its a better outcome than having lots of older couples living in 5 bed houses mixed in with families in High Density buildings.
zz865··on California plans to turn the screws on NIMBY cities
Brings it into line with all other states in the country which have more sensibly priced housing market. Its crazy that someone who's owned a house in the bay area for 50 years pays a tiny fraction of the neighbor who bought just now. Its certainly one of the reasons CA housing is expensive. If I knew taxes were capped you can pay more.

I can understand you want to reward people who stay in the area for a long time, the reward is too great IMO.

zz865··on California plans to turn the screws on NIMBY cities
Montreal used to have more people than Toronto, now Toronto has more. That shows Toronto is better at building new housing?

zz865··on California plans to turn the screws on NIMBY cities
Revoking Proposition 13 is best solution. If boomers had to pay 1% tax on the current value of their CA house they'd quickly downsize.
