zz865··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
Yeah its almost a new aristocracy where people have fun while everyone else works.
zz865··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
Yeah I meant 1989 to 2012. FTSE10 is flat from 1999 to 2021 as well.
zz865··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
> and take advantage of long term compounding.

Yeah that is what I mean, what happens when the stock market drops 75% over 25 years? Not much compounding happening. https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/%5EN225?p=%5EN225

zz865··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
Agreed it seems a paradox.

Maybe it really is socialism kills entrepreneurial spirit. If you can be an artist or a 35hr/wk public servant and live well, why bother being an entrepreneur?

zz865··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
FIRE movement is largely a result of crazy high salaries and a booming stock market, it wont last forever.
zz865··on I resigned from Twitter
> stock popped 10%

stock is back to where it was a week ago, and is still lower than most of the year. These headlines are meaningless.

zz865··on JetBrains Fleet: The Next-Generation IDE by JetBrains
Does anyone know what tech this is built with? React?
zz865··on How to Save a Ski Town
I think one issue is places like Vail, PC, Tahoe are already spread out. Going there on vacation doesn't feel special at all, just feels like you're in some generic suburb. Places like Tremblant are nicer as there is a compact walkable town where all the buildings are 5 stories tall.
zz865··on How to Save a Ski Town
I quite like the rules in the Tirol - you can only own property if you live there. No second homes, no big hotels, no renting out houses. Just small owner operated hotels and locals.
zz865··on Ask HN: EU devs who moved to the States for work, has it been worth it?
If you have the opportunity to work in the US definitely do it. Its a great change from Europe, esp if you like business & tech. Once you're here Europe really feels like its heading for relegation.

After that I'm not so sure, we got citizenship and now feels a bit like a trap. I like the land, people and climate (though too hot) but it seems a bit shallow and corporate. A lot of people from other parts of the world make huge sacrifices to bring their kids here to the land of opportunity, I worry there is too much materialistic reward and not enough culture.

Interestingly dont have a problem with the inequality, I think the rich here are almost to be pitied working non-stop to buy an even bigger 2nd house and a more luxurious car? I'm not even sure why they do it.

zz865··on Ask HN: Why is Docusign a $50B company?
Until it disappears. I tried to look at my job contract from 5.5 years ago and it no longer exists.
zz865··on Ask HN: Software Engineer hitting 40: what's next?
6% historically has been easy. Going forward it wont be as easy, think 3-4% is more likely.

Plus sounds like you dont have kids, they are very expensive in both money and time. Have you seen how much childcare is?

zz865··on Ask HN: Software Engineer hitting 40: what's next?
Perhaps I did suggest principal level isn't worth it. Most of my friends have taken the first 10-20 years off the resume - or have dramatically shrunk it.
zz865··on Ask HN: Software Engineer hitting 40: what's next?
Yes I've been doing this for 30 years. I also know all the interviews I've done lately nobody has cared about what I did 20 years ago.
zz865··on Ask HN: Software Engineer hitting 40: what's next?
I think low expectations is the best outlook. After 35 you're less desirable, sure you have experience but its not with the things employers are looking for. Eg right now the hot skills are tech that's only been around for 5 years, so you dont have any advantage over a 30 year old. Its worth doing some management jobs but they generally suck, my view is to keep as IC and just be happy with getting paid less than you used to make. If you are less fussy on money there are more choices out there. If you want more money get a side hustle.

Yes people will tell you can be pricipal dev or whatever but the pyramid narrows quickly, its only for people who are really good tech and people wise. That might be you but most devs assume they'll get there when they wont.

zz865··on California port truckers ‘drowning’ in supply chain inefficiencies
No its not new. The Bayonne Bridge was raised just to allow the new bigger boats from China to get to Newark docks. https://skyrisecities.com/news/2020/03/time-lapse-condenses-... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayonne_Bridge#Roadbed-raising...
zz865··on California port truckers ‘drowning’ in supply chain inefficiencies
There are boats coming from both sides, Suez and Panama. Each boat comes via the Suez or Panama.
zz865··on California port truckers ‘drowning’ in supply chain inefficiencies
Well I live near Newark and currently there are a bunch of boats there that came from Asia in a month, via Suez & Panama. Its much more efficient than trucking across the whole country.

zz865··on California port truckers ‘drowning’ in supply chain inefficiencies
True the East coast buys too much crap too, but doesn't have the same population growth and the ports aren't backed up like CA is.
zz865··on PyTorch: Where we are headed and why it looks a lot like Julia (but not exactly)
Wow I hadn't seen deno before, looks great. I dont like js/ts, but if you have to learn it for front end dev, it makes sense to use it at the back too.

I'm not sure what advantage Julia has over Python. Yeah it has some typing and can be faster, but its too similar. Still single threaded.

zz865··on Ask HN: Was Your Turkey Dry?
I gave up on Turkeys a long time ago after realizing no one really liked it. The Whole Foods organic chicken yesterday was so perfect I'm still thinking about it.
zz865··on Tracking Covid-19 variant B.1.1.529
This is a good summary. https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1463956686075580421
zz865··on Koreans react to startling results in Pew "what makes life meaningful" poll
The article didn't talk about how S Korea was dirt poor two generations ago. All the other countries have been wealthy for centuries.
zz865··on Low interest rates in advanced countries have pushed money into real estate
I think Californians know about expensive houses but most of the USA is pretty cheap. Places like Europe/Canada/Australia didn't go down in price in the 2008 crash like the US did - its been straight up for decades.
zz865··on IPv6-only subnets and EC2 instances
Always thought going IPv6 only is a great way to avoid getting hit by script kiddies too.
zz865··on The Catherine Project: A new experiment in liberal education
That's awesome I always wanted to talk to a St John's alumni. I heard most universities have a "great books" style course, do you know the difference? I'd love my daughter to do something like this.
zz865··on The Catherine Project: A new experiment in liberal education
https://catherineproject.org/ is the link - it actually looks fun.
zz865··on California moves to recommend delaying algebra to 9th grade statewide
The program was also to allow Statistics and Data Science as alternatives, which tbh is probably more relevant for a lot of people.
zz865··on Why WordPress is an utter load of crap to build a serious business website with
Yeah their first faq q says this, even this linked blog page is WP lol.
zz865··on A Tale of Java Hash Tables
