zucked··on Office vacancy rate in San Francisco just hit a new high
I'm in the US. I'm 10 miles from my work, in one of the eastern-most suburbs. I cross dozens of major stroads (arterials with HEAVY vehicle traffic) in my commute. The temps here in the summer are regularly 90+ degrees.

Solution? I got an e-bike. Again, I'm not saying everyone can bike the whole way. Take a bus for the first or latter half. It can be done if you actually want to make the change.

I ride my bike to work. It's fantastic. Commute isn't a four letter word to me - I get exercise, time to think, I see my neighborhood and surroundings in a new way through all the seasons. I don't do it every day, sometimes I WFH or drive to work, but most of the time, 8 months out of the year, I ride my bike.

Someone is going to come along and say "BuT I dOn'T hAvE AnY bIkE pAtHs!" That might be true. Almost nobody has a bike path from their front door to their office. I sure don't. But if you stare at a map long enough, you'll find a way. It might mean you add a detour to ride a safer route. It might mean you have to drive half way. It might mean you take public transit half the way. I can't solutionize for everyone, but changing up your commute really changes things. It doesn't have to be such a miserable existence.

zucked··on Lufthansa abandons AirTag ban
Good question - at first blush it doesn't appear that it is. I wonder if that's because it was declared a deliberate act by the pilot and was not due to plane/pilot error/safety. I did a surface level dive on the source's methodology and didn't see it called out explicitly.

Point taken, though - you could say that the PiC of that flight might not have been had they better process/procedures.

zucked··on Lufthansa abandons AirTag ban
Yeah, you're right - managing PR and a social media presence is a direct correlation to operating airplanes with a relatively stellar safety record:

Definitely don't know the people in the photos, but I do love the work the LoC does - it's so delightfully broad and wonky.
zucked··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
Having such a broad strokes approach to English manufacturing/design is awfully elitist. It's okay to be proud of your successes - they've contributed a lot. We tend to focus on the abject failures (eg British Leyland) but without things like the Merlin engine, the P51 wouldn't have been as dominant during WWII.

It took me a few minutes to wrap my head around how the site works, but I am seriously impressed. It's intuitive and easy to grok.

The illustrations are tops, too - love that aspect.

Neat. Love to watch traffic at KAPA - saw a Walton plane land there the other day an hour or so before Condi was named part owner of the Broncos.

There's so much silly about this, I'm struggling with where to start.

>I really want everyone who travels to realize: no, it's not content producers who are ruining it. It's YOU. YOU are ruining these places.

How do you suppose so many of these places are "discovered" in the first place? My beef with these "content producers" is that they've all got the "I'M THE MAIN CHARACTER" vibe. They hog all the views, the private spaces so they can make their locale look a specific way. I don't really care if you're being paid for it - that doesn't mean you get to hog the space so you can preen and primp it into a specific A E S T H E T I C.

They are having their attention and habits hijacked via video from TikTok instead. I'd argue that's not better, at all.
zucked··on Tell HN: Amazon shopping is racing to the bottom of quality
This still happens. The toys are from Target and are <$30 in my circles and we usually try to make them legos or something that can be used again and not just thrown away, but there is rarely more thought goes into them than that.

The gift bags are still a part of the song and dance, but I've seen some shift there, too - one party we were invited to, the family gave plants & seeds as the party favor.

zucked··on Tell HN: Amazon shopping is racing to the bottom of quality
I'm not doubting the reasoning behind not wanting those category of toys, I'm asking if OP did the polite thing and, you know, told the potential gift givers how they felt about cheap toys before writing them off as "non-friends".
zucked··on Tell HN: Amazon shopping is racing to the bottom of quality
Whoa, do these people know about and understand your stance here? If someone goes to the trouble to get you a toy at all, I would hope you'd give them the benefit of the doubt before scratching them off the friend list.

Vegas loves these - the last time I stayed on the strip it was $40+/day "resort amenity" fee that they did a great job of hiding throughout the booking and checkin process.
zucked··on I used DALL·E 2 to generate a logo
So, if a nascent company chooses to go down this same path of generating (or maybe _seeding_) their logo design with AI, have they essentially given up any ability to protect that logo going forward?

I add Kefir to a lot of dishes (both cooked and uncooked) that call for some dairy component. I actually prefer it to milk in things like pancakes, even though cooking it must kill some/many/all of the probiotics. I was making my own, but I was finding the process a bit more involved than I wanted to deal with, so I just recently started buying pre-made kefir.

I can't say that I've experienced a world-altering impact to my life (wow, no more acne and I've lost 22lbs!) but I do think I've been able to eat dairy products (cheese and yogurt) with far less upset stomach than before. Careful with introducing Kefir if you're looking to try it out - start small. I was adding a tablespoon to my dishes and it made me gassy as heck for the first couple of days.

zucked··on Cheap junk flooding Amazon has brand names like MOFFBUZW
They're literally the same - I see the same product sold by shady third parties being sold on both sites. At least with Walmart you can select "Available for pickup" and get products that Walmart themselves sell and stand behind.

zucked··on Show HN: I built an app for when I talk too much in online meetings
If it's not a meeting that you have any applicability to and someone asks for your input in the meeting, say so.

"Sorry, I don't see myself using this product/service/team - not because it isn't good, it just isn't relevant to what I'm responsible for/in charge of".

I feel like people treat meetings like this inescapable prison; once you're invited, you can never escape! It's bonkers. If you don't need to go to the meeting or don't have applicability… don't.

I work for a Fortune-listed company -- exactly the kind of place where attendee bloat thrives and I've never once had any manager or supervisor aggressively push back on my declines if they are valid.

zucked··on Show HN: I built an app for when I talk too much in online meetings
My assumption is that if you're in the meeting, it has some adjacency to your work. This isn't about calling on the daydreaming kid in high school Spanish class who _has_ to be there to graduate. If you're in the meeting, it should be applicable to you and you should be ready to give some input; even saying something like "I'm not sure, need more info", or "don't have anything to add" is a valid and acceptable answer.

If the meeting isn't germane to your work, why are you in it?

I know people who do this because they're genuinely trying to get input from a broad set of people, some of whom will never speak unless they're asked directly. It doesn't have to be a mark of an alpha trying to beta everyone else.

Like the inner workings of the brain, the way the microbiome of our body impacts our life is poorly understood. There will definitely be a lot of FUD that will come from this, but the TLDR for many of these studies seems to be: eat better quality foodstuffs and you'll be better off.

zucked··on Think U.S. Gas Prices at $5 a Gallon Are Bad? Try $10
>Which is perfectly rational. Why drive a car you don't want out of fear that gas prices may someday go up?

You don't have to buy a fuel efficient car today for an eventuality that may never happen, but you definitely don't have a leg to stand on when fuel gets more expensive and it suddenly costs you 10x more per month in fuel -- that's on (hypothetical) you.

zucked··on Think U.S. Gas Prices at $5 a Gallon Are Bad? Try $10
Yes - I'm certainly being pedantic. You're correct in that driving style can have a huge impact on fuel consumption. You don't have to hypermile it; just not playing speed racer between red lights, cruising at 70 instead of 85 helps, etc.

I was just kind of blown away by the claim. Not that long ago, high 30's MPG on the highway was the domain of economy cars (think Corolla's and the like) and euro diesel cars. To hear that a gasoline SUV, albeit a smaller one, could be close to 40MPG on the highway made me skeptical and curious of how it was achieved.

zucked··on Think U.S. Gas Prices at $5 a Gallon Are Bad? Try $10
We have a very short collective memory. While fuel prices have been quite low over the last ~3-5 years, most people forgot the period between 2008-2014 where fuel was (relatively) expensive and went on right back to buying fuel inefficient SUVs and large trucks. Only TWO of the best selling vehicles in the US in 2021 were anything other than an SUV or pickup (Toyota Camry & Honda Civic). Now all of a sudden fuel is expensive again and people are being reminded of how expensive it can be to lug around a single person in a half-ton pickup every day.
zucked··on Think U.S. Gas Prices at $5 a Gallon Are Bad? Try $10
As far as I can tell, you won't see "hybrid" on Audi's site because the "energy recuperation system" isn't a hybrid system at all -- it simply banks energy from the alternator and then reduces the load on the alternator (and the load on the engine, as a byproduct) when requested, allowing the car's energy needs to be drawn off the battery during that time instead.

From Audi's literature:

>While the vehicle is coasting or braking, the alternator voltage is raised above the level of the basic electrical system. During these phases the alternator can convert the vehicle’s kinetic energy into electrical energy, which is stored temporarily in the vehicle battery. When the vehicle subsequently accelerates or is driven at constant speeds, this energy is used to relieve the load on the alternator, allowing a fuel saving of up to 3%, depending on the driving cycle.

I am fully aware of how efficient a modern turbo engine can be, and perhaps you did, in fact, best the EPA estimates. Did you calculate these numbers yourself, or rely on the onboard computer?

zucked··on Think U.S. Gas Prices at $5 a Gallon Are Bad? Try $10
If OP has their cruise control set at 72MPH and is tailgating close enough that they benefit from the slipstream, I'm 1.)impressed at their precision driving 2.) terrified we may share the road some day.

I don't doubt that we may someday achieve more autonomous highway cruising where vehicles take 'lead' and 'follow' positions within feet of each other to benefit from drafting, but humans doing it scares me senseless.

zucked··on Think U.S. Gas Prices at $5 a Gallon Are Bad? Try $10
High gas prices will be used as a talking piece against the Democrats if they continue through the mid-term elections… not sure your point of view makes a lot of sense.
