I do some stuff.

zten··on Performance of modern Java on data-heavy workloads
They (Oracle and Java) are going the other direction on this. Jigsaw helped with JDK bundling. IntelliJ bundles its own distribution.
zten··on ScoutSuite: Multi-cloud security auditing tool
I apologize for the uncharitable description. It was more of an organizational issue. They could have picked any other tool to execute a self-inflicted DoS and I would have been upset with that instead.
zten··on ScoutSuite: Multi-cloud security auditing tool
I find it disruptive as a developer in an organization that used to run it very frequently. It aggressively crawls your infrastructure and blows up AWS API calls with low rate limits, like the EMR cluster description operations.
zten··on Valve Drops Mac Support for SteamVR Less Than Three Years After WWDC 2017
Mobile GPUs are a sad joke in general. Looking at GPU benchmarking sites shows the Radeon Pro Vega 20 in my MBP as competitive with desktop parts from 2012 or 2013.
zten··on ICQ New
Might want to check, I logged into mine (272605) recently
zten··on How the iPad's New Trackpad Works
External monitors force the use of higher-power discrete graphics. See an adjacent comment about eGPU if you want to control this better.

Edit: admittedly, this is a bit like returning to a desktop...

zten··on No ‘carmageddon’ on auto-free Market Street: study shows bikes and buses benefit
Nobody is on Market to get to a destination on Market. You can’t park for the vast majority of it, and there are literally no driveways. This change mostly eliminates through traffic that drags down bus service.
zten··on Does my data fit in RAM?
I'm about 75% joking: restore a new cluster from a snapshot for horizontal scaling. They did launch a feature along those lines, because my joke suggestion probably doesn't scale organizationally: take a look at Concurrency Scaling. This is also a fundamental feature of Snowflake with the separation of compute and storage.
zten··on Monoliths Are the Future
Sorry, I noticed you made the same observation in another thread after you got dogpiled by everyone; I left my question over there. Yeah, I've had to contend with that problem before -- hard to imagine how I forgot about it :)
zten··on Monoliths Are the Future
Isn't that a weakness of any data dependency? I could push a new service that deprecates a field and supplies a replacement. I still have to communicate it and get downstream consumers to migrate. Or is the problem that reporting teams are looking at the low-level implementation details, rather than some stable higher-level interface? (I don't know how to avoid that when you're just pulling someone else's database directly or indirectly.)
zten··on Monoliths Are the Future
I don't think you're right back to a monolith with centralized reporting. Remember, microservices doesn't mean JSON-RPC over HTTP. Passing updates extracted via change data capture and forwarding them to another reporting system is a perfectly viable interface. Data duplication is also an acceptable consequence in this design.
zten··on Announcing RDS/Aurora Snapshot Export to S3
Hmm, I wonder why they didn't push people towards DMS instead? This S3 export offering certainly commands a premium price for the privilege.
zten··on Announcing RDS/Aurora Snapshot Export to S3
The snapshots already deliver your desired functionality. This dumps it as a different format. In fact, it probably depends on restoring the snapshot to a database in order to implement this format change.

I think this is a replacement for rolling your own database exports for analytics applications with Sqoop or Spark.

zten··on Things that are illegal to build in most American cities now
I think you have to travel outside the US for examples in the second paragraph. I immediately thought of Shinjuku.
zten··on Generating a Java program with 90% less code
Yes! Things like Spring Boot are actually a reaction to the days of Java EE and the web of Java-centric technologies.

This always confused me as a newer developer. Vendors competed with each other with different JavaEE implementations (WebSphere, Glassfish etc) that all conformed to the same interface and provided everything including the kitchen sink, but what really differentiated the products were vendor-specific features that require you to go outside the interface, but if you tried to use that stuff, another senior developer would tell you that we can't marry our implementation to a specific vendor... meanwhile, literally every company you go to uniformly uses Spring and Hibernate, and both will inevitably require you to not pretend that they're dumb implementations of javax.inject and javax.persistence.

zten··on Coming Soon – Graviton2-Powered General Purpose EC2 Instances
Definitely exciting news! For some reason I was picturing that you might have difficulty building things like xgboost or getting an optimized version of BLAS, but that doesn't seem to be the case. (the former is supported and the latter is important enough that ARM ships their own version)
zten··on Coming Soon – Graviton2-Powered General Purpose EC2 Instances
Python libraries frequently aren't only in Python, and use native bindings. Node packages less so, but it still happens.

Java might surprise you, too, especially on EMR. I've found math, compression, and machine learning libraries that reach out to native code using JNI.

zten··on California car burglaries are at crisis levels
I still haven't figured out why "well it's just a misdemeanor" means the justice system totally gives up on that type of crime. Everybody discussing Prop 47 talks about this like this is an obvious thing to assume. It still looks to me like crime is being committed -- I certainly wouldn't go and commit it, anyway, because it feels like it should have very real repercussions.
zten··on Instagram’s Explore Recommender System
Try long pressing and then sliding the post up. You'll get the same menu without popping into the full post view. I don't think it counts as strongly, because I've been able to eliminate a lot of things this way.
zten··on PayPal to acquire shopping and rewards platform Honey for $4B
I think we're in agreement. The numbers through Honey probably look good, and the other affiliates probably don't have a good handle on how frequently they're getting scooped by other affiliates.
zten··on PayPal to acquire shopping and rewards platform Honey for $4B
They do care. Some affiliate rates are far higher than that.

Affiliate comes out of retailer marketing budgets. They set the rates thinking they're paying for certain types of customers from certain participants. Honey is getting paid what the retailers think it's worth - they're skeptical, but it seems to be driving incremental conversion for especially price-sensitive shoppers.

zten··on Stripe to move to South San Francisco
Well... their new office is on the SF2G Bayway route, but the whole area is absolutely unfriendly to bikes. Use Google Maps and look at the intersection of Gateway Blvd and Oyster Point Blvd. It's special.
zten··on Mac OS Catalina: more trouble than it’s worth
I'm happy with it too. They just added Radeon RX 5700 XT drivers to the latest beta release, something I have been eagerly awaiting since the card got released.
zten··on Lyft No Longer Showing What Individual Passengers Pay on Trips
This doesn't apply for contractors, does it?

Additionally, it's still illegal for an employer to let you end up below federal minimum wage, tipped or not. But shady places are happy to steal from their employees.

zten··on What happens when a city bans cars from its streets?
In-built assumption that you need to use your own car stored near where you live to start and end the journey.
zten··on The curious economics of being ripped off on holiday
Hm, mine says $9.50. Fiber vs DSL rental price?

I know I can return the router, but what I wish I could really "return" is the phone service that adds a ton of taxes.

zten··on The curious economics of being ripped off on holiday
> Further, in San Francisco, if you sign up for $40/mo fiber Internet, it's really $63.50.

$73.63 once your promotional price expires.

zten··on Modern C, Second Edition
> Perhaps I should knock up a script to visit random sites with ads and maybe click on a few, in a container/vm. Would that help?

Don't worry, there's enough publisher-side fraud already doing that for you!

zten··on Ask HN: Are you ok?
I think it was facetious. For example, lots of ops work is producing mountains upon mountains of YAML to feed into tools like Terraform just to provision and glue things together.
zten··on Improved VPC Networking for AWS Lambda
They definitely do if you're trying to use things based on EC2 instances. The newest types of instances have been VPC-only for years now.
