zquestz··on Demystifying StartupWMClass
As the maintainer of Plank Reloaded, the most common bug report I get is "this app has the wrong icon." It's almost never the dock - it's a broken StartupWMClass in the app's .desktop file. So I wrote up how to find the right value on X11, Wayland, and KDE, and why deleting the line often fixes it.
zquestz··on I verified my LinkedIn identity. Here's what I handed over
In your "WHAT YOU SHOULD DO" section, you missed the most important thing.

Stop using LinkedIn, and stop using these terrible services that rip away our privacy.

zquestz··on William Gibson Reads Neuromancer (2004)
There is a much higher quality version of this posted on IPFS.

zquestz··on Show HN: Chawan TUI web browser
This works great, been playing with it through s-search and it works way better than w3m. =)
zquestz··on Show HN: I completed shipping my desktop app
"This Deployment has been disabled."

This is why people shouldn't use Vercel. The last thing you want is a message like this when people come to your site.

zquestz··on OpenWrt One WiFi 6 router with Filogic 820 SoC launched for $89
Exactly what I was going to say. Who wants a LAN port that is slower than the WAN port?
zquestz··on YAML is not a superset of JSON
However this wasn't really true till 1.2 if I am reading the spec correctly. Plus many parsers default to 1.1. =\
zquestz··on YAML is not a superset of JSON
Thanks. Didn't realize anyone thought this. I checked the YAML docs when I saw this post, and it didn't seem like an official feature.

The SAP article definitely states it, that's the first time I have seen it described that way.

zquestz··on YAML is not a superset of JSON
I am confused, when was YAML ever considered a superset of JSON?

These are completely different serialization formats.

zquestz··on Show HN: My 70 year old grandma is learning to code and made a word game
Damn took me 13 tries. Fun game. =)
zquestz··on Finding New Pastures: Big Nerd Ranch's Next Chapter
I have extremely fond memories of the ranch. It was what got Throttled Pro off the ground and was by far the best Objective-C resource I could have possibly imagined.

Aaron will forever be a hero in my book. Best of luck in the future.

zquestz··on Krita is now available on the macOS store
I was one of those devs long ago. The shareware model worked wonders.
zquestz··on Krita is now available on the macOS store
This model should be done more. Develop the product in the open, offer a fully functional open source version, and then offer a paid version on commercial app stores.

This can bring in some extra revenue for the project, plus covers the app store dev work.

I bet a bunch of users would buy it just to support the dev team. Plus I would argue an app store purchase (one click) can be done faster/easier than any donation flow I have seen for an open-source project.

Just something to think about.

zquestz··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
This is where I share my thoughts about crypto, security, infrastructure, linux, food, health and spirit.

zquestz··on A Beginner's Guide to eBPF
https://ebpf.io/what-is-ebpf/ is quite useful.
zquestz··on Omg.lol – A lovable web page and email address
Actually pretty neat, but it would be substantially nicer with a lifetime account option, even if it was expensive.

Having to renew is inconvenient, and makes it possible to lose your name.

zquestz··on Ask HN: How do you discover music?
Primarily I stream from Pandora, Spotify and Soundcloud through Sonos. Then I have Sonos scrobble everything to Last.fm.

I still find Pandora to be the best for finding new artists, I just create new stations and see what they recommend.

zquestz··on When to use Bazel?
I second this. Bazel is more trouble than it's worth.
zquestz··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
I love my framework laptop. Runs linux perfectly, and has upgradable components.

The arch guide is also excellent. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Framework_Laptop

zquestz··on Ask HN: Ok to only allow Google/Apple/FB login for mobile app?
I also avoid sites that only have social login. Don't think it is odd at all.
zquestz··on Convert curl commands to code in several languages
Quite useful. Thanks!
zquestz··on Donald Knuth – The Patron Saint of Yak Shaves (2017)
Enjoyable read for sure. Must have missed this the first time it went around.
zquestz··on Procrastinatory Doom Loops
This is a very natural phenomenon. I can definitely relate.
zquestz··on Framework Laptop with Ubuntu Review
Honestly, the framework was one of the better purchases I have made. There were definitely some Bluetooth hiccups, but all other functionality worked perfectly out of the box on Arch. The wiki included a few key tips.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Framework_Laptop

One thing to note, is that I had a bad time with tlp. I would suggest using auto-cpufreq if you want better battery life.

zquestz··on Why is Tcl syntax so weird (2013)
Figured this thread would be full of eggdrop comments. So many good memories writing TCL scripts back in the 90's. Really happy to see the project is still developed, definitely a part of internet history for me.
zquestz··on NixOS on Framework Laptop
So, randomly I come across this right after I setup my Framework laptop for Arch. Funny thing is, I also transitioned from a 1st gen X1 Extreme.

Cool to see you getting NixOS running, Arch on the Framework has worked flawlessly. So much nicer than the X1.
