zppln··on Reverse-engineering a three-axis attitude indicator from the F-4 fighter plane
Can't speak for the F35, but for the fighter I work on we basically consider the pilot dead if you have shrapnel damage in the cockpit. For instance, the FCS is located behind the pilot. That being said, I would assume the F35 display being at least dual redundant (think two displays merged together, which can be done seamlessly) for flight safety reasons.
zppln··on Show HN: Hosting my website using my C web server
What are you on about? C is more useful day-to-day than the vast majority of languages. Learning it is hardly a waste of time.

Seriously...

zppln··on [dead]
Does it take my receeding hairline into account, or does it assume I'll get a transplant too?
zppln··on EU countries approve 2035 phaseout of CO2-emitting cars
Ah yes, the brilliant rural public transport network must be why EPA tractors are so popular. :)
zppln··on Counter-Strike 2 – Limited Test for select CS:GO players
As someone who has been holding ramp on Nuke for like 20 years I'm glad the upgrade looks dope.
zppln··on Throughout the rich world, the young are falling out of love with cars
I got my license just in time to be able to drive my pregnant wife to hospital to give birth, aged 33. Before that I didn't really need one. Now I love my car and the life I want to live absolutely involve owning one (I don't necessarily love the ownership part though...). I suspect a lot of young people will eventually discover the same.
zppln··on Show HN: PlantUML based collaborative UML editor is now open source
Software level design documentation in aerospace make extensive use of UML (my shop even use PlantUML). Sequence diagrams in particular are quite useful.

People often find that level of documentation a bit redundant if you have access to the code, but if you're pressed for time and the diagrams actually describe the crucial parts it can be a huge timesaver when you have to fix something in a 10 year old component.

zppln··on How the Xbox 360 knows if your hard drive is genuine
Yup, MS really threw it all away with their Kinect play.
zppln··on Explore Wikipedia's New Look
This assumes you control your browser, which may not be the case in a corp setting.
zppln··on Diskless infrastructure in beta (System Transparency: stboot) (2022)
I could see some defence companies being paranoid enough for this (although they'd be more skeptical about the cloud provider part).
zppln··on Kristall – a browser without support for CSS/JS/WASM or graphical websites
I think perhaps having their own protocol serve to encapsulate the community interested in this particular form of simplicity.
zppln··on Firm Says Cargo Vessel Ran Aground in Egypt’s Suez Canal
Seems to come out of Ukraine: https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:71...

Sabotage..?

zppln··on Does the world have enough lithium to move to electric vehicles?
You'll have great trouble selling that idea in many parts of Europe as well.
zppln··on Bunny AI
I'd be happy just to have the moving of wet clothes from the washing machine into the tumbler automated. But not even this science can provide. :(
zppln··on Software workers labor union sues Klarna over layoffs of 700
Don't know. They're not popular over here.

Edit: the web browser thing can be pretty spotty in my experience and to my memory I almost feel like Klarna predates it?

zppln··on Software workers labor union sues Klarna over layoffs of 700
Na, they exist because they made checkout convenient. I never have to register anywhere anymore. Just type my email address and my info is filled in automatically. I don't have to get my card out and type in the numbers, Klarna will just bill me. And as long as I pay the bill on time (which I always do) this won't cost me anything extra.

I mean, I don't really like Klarna on principle and they seem to have a pretty whacky corp culture, but one has to admit it's convenient.

zppln··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
If Carmack suggested changes to my code I'd implement them in a heartbeat. If he suggested changes to my business I'd be a bit more cautious.
zppln··on Atom was archived today
I seriously don't understand the hype around VS Code. I find it atrocious. The UI is complete trash.
zppln··on The Pepsi Cola Addict (1982)
Wow, what a story. It also lead me to read the related article [1]. I remember the highway incident from when it happened, but not the circumstances and aftermath. In some ways is even more bizarre (and tragic).

zppln··on A thin gold layer could be the secret to glasses that don't fog
Or even better, glasses that don't require cleaning at all...
zppln··on Handwritten complaint to the court by alleged CIA Vault 7 leaker
Seems like it's supposedly written by this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_Schulte
zppln··on “If Sweden didn’t have the Nordic Model, I would not be alive”
I've never quite bought this law. Trafficking was already illegal. Pimping too. The only effect this law appears to have had is that prostitution moved below ground.
zppln··on US annual inflation declines to 7.1% in November vs. 7.3% expected
I'm not sure I buy (heh) into this. I usually buy things because I need them, or want them in the moment. I'm not gonna postpone buying a washing machine because it might be cheaper next month. I'm not gonna pass on getting wasted because drinks are cheaper next month. I'm not gonna starve myself because food might be cheaper next week.
zppln··on JPEG XL support has officially been removed from Chromium
Keep in mind that it's from the AVIF team though. :)
zppln··on JPEG XL support has officially been removed from Chromium
Seems to have been partly based on this: https://storage.googleapis.com/avif-comparison/index.html
zppln··on Does ChatGPT Exhibit Ideological Bias?
I gotta admit it's pretty eerie to read what it says once it's "tricked" into going off the rails. Hard to not get the sense that it's reined in pretty hard.

That being said, aside from the transgender stuff, I read the answers as trying to be as inoffensive as possible rather than straight up woke.

zppln··on Tell HN: Giving ChatGPT access to a real terminal
The automotive industry has essentially been beta testing their "self driving" cars on public roads for the past couple of years. I very much doubt AI researchers are gonna take AI safety seriously (nor are they gonna be forced to) until people start dying.
zppln··on Simulate Asteroid Impacts on Earth
An impact this size happens on average every 25,000 years

A comet on default settings. T-that can't be right, r-right?

zppln··on The political orientation of the ChatGPT AI system
Ah, that explains it! :)
