zodiakzz··on Google restricts Android sideloading
I immediately mentally discarded everything I read once I realized it's an ad. Can we please get a better link @dang.

zodiakzz··on Google blocked Motorola use of Perplexity AI, witness says
Google could be running foul of antitrust laws if forcing Gemini as default on Android OEM's is part of the standard contract required to use the Android brand.

It's not a 2011 article. The alleged statement by Tim was made in 2011.

zodiakzz··on Were React hooks a mistake?
Can you give any example where hooks helped readability without trading it for extremely high complexity behind the scenes? I maintain a large React codebase part-time. The client is a very good friend of mine and I was the one who chose to make my own life miserable by selecting React. Needless to say I won't touch/introduce anything "new and/or popular" for customer projects with a ten-foot pole for the rest of my career.

I used both class-based (thank goodness?) and hooks based components but only coz React ecosystem forced me to, class-based were frozen and left in a sorry state - as if React's dictator-in-chief (forgot whoever they are/were, don't want to know - tried to engage once in writing the "beta" React docs but they were horribly toxic in response for no reason) is the only smart person(s) ever and all these OOP language designers are... No, dear Kim Jong(s), you were the ones abusing JS classes in strange counter productive ways and I easily found better OOP patterns for my class-based components. Then I met hooks - the definition of anti-productive. Not to say people don't have a right to write/reflect whatever madness in their code they want to but for me it's a tragedy their "work" became so popular. I don't mean to belittle people who actually have it but hooks is what comes to mind when I think of what PTSD must feel like. I no longer take up JS/TS SPA projects. For the mental strain - the pay feels peanuts compared to native mobile app development so why bother.

zodiakzz··on Google dusts off the Google+ playbook to fight ChatGPT
What are boq and pod..? (curious non-Googler here, Google search didn't help).
zodiakzz··on OSS maintainers are losing GitHub sponsors due to loss of PayPal support
I thought PayPal's selling point is keeping one safe from shady sellers...? Personally I don't think Microsoft is gonna leak my CC details. Neither will an OSS developer run away after my donation (or if they do, it's not a huge deal).

So why don't these "sponsors" just use their Credit Card?

zodiakzz··on ByteDance confirmed it used TikTok to monitor journalists’ physical location
No it isn't. Tracking is a side issue, CCP can influence public opinion during elections by altering the "For You" algorithm.
zodiakzz··on What causes Alzheimer's? Scientists are rethinking the answer
Citation? This kind of study will take at least three quarters of a century to reach such clear cut conclusions. I don't think people hanging on to pseudoscientific BS live long enough to worry about Alzheimers.

Employees of this office are very small and delicate, deserve protection from local pervs. Better a thousand innocent men are locked up than one guilty man roam free.

zodiakzz··on Apple lets apps in South Korea use third-party payment systems
>Meanwhile in the US, a judge ruled last year that Apple must allow other forms of in-app purchase, although the ruling was later put on hold pending appeal.

Shameful publicly done corruption. Looking at the "Corruption Perceptions Index", SK has more corruption than USA somehow.

zodiakzz··on Brave Talk: Unlimited, private video calls, in browser
I'm amazed that you managed to find so much negativity in Brave - a tiny player - making massive accomplishments. Unlike Firefox, Brave does not get half a billion USD of Universal Basic Income from Google every year. They are a for profit entity and need a revenue stream to fund the highly expensive browser development work.

Mozilla is on a nosedive towards fading to obscurity. I am unable to understand any parallels here.

zodiakzz··on Reddit bans links to Russian state media across the entire site
Nope. It's been common practice for years now on any major site that every user submitted link is instantly web scraped.
zodiakzz··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Google Drive?
Courtesy warning: Zoho is headquartered in Chennai, India. A country with an increasingly authoritarian government so it's a safe assumption that their government will have access to all your data. But this is important why? Because the regime is very incompetent with terrible security practices. Massive data leaks are a monthly occuring.

zodiakzz··on Systemd, 10 years later (2020)
I miss Systemd inside Docker containers so much. IMO, for an app, "one-process per container" is a huge pain and very messy. I have a massively popular software to back up that claim: https://github.com/discourse/discourse_docker

I use phusion/baseimage-docker[1] right now, love every bit of it. Having the database, web server(nginx) and the java backend all in one place works beautifully.

The only pain point is having to write `runit` scripts for startup and shutdown for each service, hence the wish for Systemd inside containers.

I can make violent threats against the President at his face and nobody would bat an eye. But my country is at the peak of unfree. So you didn't help :(

Edit: Ah, silly me. That was just a thinly veiled insult against China, the great big devil.

zodiakzz··on Systemd 250 Released
Can you elaborate? Systemd also uses text based config files... how did you calculate the "breaks" percentage? I've been using Fedora with Systemd since a few years now. Nothing that broke was Systemd's fault in any way.
zodiakzz··on Trilogy – GitHub-built MySQL client library written in C
>Only supports the parts of the text protocol that are in common use. There's no support for the binary protocol or prepared statements

Prepared statements are not in common use...? They must be talking about C language code I guess. How do C developers sanitize input?

zodiakzz··on Create-React-App v5 has been released
FINALLY! We're free from the misery of the nastiest-entire-work-day-wasting npm package known to mankind: "sass"! (It is a long abandoned project, succeeded by dart-sass.).
zodiakzz··on Tailwind CSS v3.0
Whoosh. Well I prefer my "modern" alternatives to be superior than the legacy ones, not the other way around.
zodiakzz··on Tailwind CSS v3.0
Perhaps. But hard coded colors, hard coded layout (flexbox etc), hard coded margins, paddings hard coded everything right in the markup. Tailwind and those adjectives are mutually exclusive.

Does nobody remember themeing forums software like vbulletin? Designers weren't allowed to touch the markup in the slightest and yet so many amazing themes were made. Why? Styling wasn't hard-coded in the markup. Hell, remember the insanely customized old.reddit subreddits?

zodiakzz··on Tailwind CSS v3.0
If you have a hammer... I am able to iterate orders of magnitude faster in Adobe Photoshop. Back and forth feedback with the customer and then the end result gets coded in non-spaghetti reusable, themeable HTML/CSS. Seems you're iterating at the wrong phase.
