zitsarethecure··on Japan will no longer require floppy disks for submitting some official documents
I wonder if you can still fax them over?
zitsarethecure··on Solid-state EV batteries now face "production hell"
A lot of cars also have remote starters that people use to precondition (warm up or cool down) their cars.
zitsarethecure··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
That would be great.
zitsarethecure··on YouTube and Spotify won't launch Apple Vision Pro apps, joining Netflix
I was excited initially about these but I am loathe to admit I have kind of lost interest. Perhaps I am getting old.
zitsarethecure··on He spent his life building a $1M stereo
A million bucks could have got him and his family many great trips to see the best musicians in the world play in beautiful places with amazing acoustics. In that scenario, when he died he would not have had the "best stereo in the world", but he would have been surrounded by people who loved him and all of them would have had memories of those experiences that would last far longer than the short period of time it took them to part out his "masterpiece".
zitsarethecure··on Wine 9.0 RC5 – Run Windows Applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and macOS
Wine runs on Windows too!

zitsarethecure··on Enthusiasts have brought IBM's legendary buckling spring keyboard back (2017)
I own a couple of unicomps not just because they are buckling spring, but also because they (at least used to) have the option of swapping the location of control and caps-lock like old Sun keyboards had, which I personally prefer.
zitsarethecure··on Discontinued and unreleased Microsoft peripherals revived by licensing deal
> One day physical scroll wheels will be a thing of the past.

God I hope not. I want more tactile feedback in my interfaces, not less.

zitsarethecure··on Tesla claims California false-advertising law violates First Amendment
There are a surprising number of Apple and Tesla posts lately. While I am not yet convinced it is being outright paid for, but there does seem to be a higher concentration of specific brand advocacy here than there used to be. I wonder if it has to do with so many people also being share holders with a vested interest in their success?
zitsarethecure··on Reviving decade-old Macs with antiX and MX Linux (2022)
Fedora 39 runs great on my decade old Thinkpad X1 Carbon. Proudly running systemd, too!
zitsarethecure··on Don't waste money on a math coprocessor they said
I remember the day I got my AMD 287 co-processor for my old Samsung 286. IIRC I ordered it from an ad I saw in Compute! magazine. At the time I had this book about writing fractals in C and I went back and recompiled all my code to use the co-processor instead of the emulation library that came with Turbo C, what a revelation. These days I only buy CPU's with math coprocessors.
zitsarethecure··on Localsend: Open-Source Airdrop Alternative
I call this the "What is a computer?" effect.

zitsarethecure··on macOS Containers v0.0.1
All of those things work fine on every computer in my household that runs Linux. This spans thinkpad, dell and ASUS laptops, Dell desktops, home-built gamer type desktops, a few raspberry pi's, and a SFF PC we use to run Kodi on the main TV.

I do find it amusing in a thread about how you have to turn off a core security feature to be able to use containers properly on a Mac that the discussion immediately turns to how bad Linux sound drivers supposedly are. Honestly, I went in the other direction (Mac to Linux) and I've found the waters to be just fine. I don't know if I just have the magic touch or something, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

zitsarethecure··on Bambu Lab A1 Mini
FWIW, Prusa has released the first alpha version of a new firmware update for the Mini+ that adds input shaping and increases the speed of the machine substantially.

zitsarethecure··on FAA authorizes Zipline to deliver commercial packages using drones
Yes, but how does the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow compare to that of one delivering a coconut?
zitsarethecure··on Hacking the LG Monitor's EDID
Light googling reveals examples of Windows and MacOS users experiencing issues with LG ULTRAGEAR monitors too.
zitsarethecure··on LibreOffice 24.2 Will Succeed LibreOffice 7.6
I use both. I use local for stuff I consider important (estate documents, financial documents, etc) and the "cloud" when I don't care about the risk of storing information on someone else's computer.
zitsarethecure··on Honda Monkey Breaks World Record Covering 4,183 Km on Single Tank
Indeed, if you want an impressively impractical trip in an impressively impractical custom built EV, you'll have to make due with the world solar challenge. 3000+ kilometers at highway speed, carrying more than 1 person, and entirely on solar power.

zitsarethecure··on Westfield’s San Francisco centre mall lost 46% of its stores since 2020
Out here in the "new" hotness, Columbus Ohio, entire malls are not just losing stores, but shutting down.

zitsarethecure··on Apple Vision Pro Is Apple's New VR Headset
Once we start seeing celebrities going everywhere with them on at all times I suspect uptake will be huge in the upper/middle class.
zitsarethecure··on A 1914 silent film considered lost was rescued from a vault
Correct me if I am wrong, but weren't some of the lost episodes recovered from copies that were illegally made by people recording the show off their TV? I can't help but feel that the costs to preserve these things would be much lower if we just let fans do the backing up.
zitsarethecure··on OpenWRT 22.03.4
Does asus merlin support wireguard yet?
zitsarethecure··on Mayan ball game scoreboard thought to be over 1k years old found in Mexico
I once went to an Ohio State football pre-game show where the band played and they had the players march through into the main stadium. Everyone was wearing the team colors, every song they played had these hand gestures and words you had to do and say along with the music, and there were all sorts of odd seemingly out of nowhere cheers and exclamations by the fans, the players and the various highly dressed up musicians and officials. If an alien species came down and observed it, I would be surprised if they didn't say this kind of thing had "ritual undertones".
zitsarethecure··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
Seems rather costly to do it this way. Why not just leave an effectively empty commit message and then use GPT to generate a summary based on the diff only when you need one?
zitsarethecure··on SETI@home is in hibernation
Personally I no longer use laptops, and instead do 99% of my computing on a fast desktop with a great keyboard, great monitors, etc. If something breaks or needs to be upgraded, I can pop it open and get it done, usually on the same day. On the rare occasion I need to travel I'll take my smart phone and a note pad if there is some need to take notes.
zitsarethecure··on The False Promise of Chomskyism
It's a quantum talk. You can only know how long the talk is or what it's about, but not both.
zitsarethecure··on KDE and GNOME seeks $100k to turn Flathub into a Store for the Linux desktop
Indeed the communication factor is critical. I've been around long enough to see plenty of good tech fail simply because backers are not very good communicators and I think the top level comment is a great example of this. I am just a lowly end user, I just want to be able to install and run the latest version of PrusaSlicer or Zoom on whatever Linux distribution I am using. I don't obviously see how to do that with nix and I don't really want to spend the time to figure it out, while the folks behind flatpak seem to have made it a trivial experience.
zitsarethecure··on KDE and GNOME seeks $100k to turn Flathub into a Store for the Linux desktop
Is there an actual technical limitation or just because of the binary naming convention? I ask because some of the flatpak apps I have installed I almost always run via the command line by putting "/var/lib/flatpak/exports/bin" in my path and aliasing to the long name, ie: "alias evince=org.gnome.Evince" and they seem to work fine.
zitsarethecure··on SkyNews (Canadian Astronomy magazine) is closing
This is a real bummer. I've been a subscriber for many years, and one of the last of many paper magazine subscriptions I still enjoyed.
