zinglersen··on Anthropic agrees to pay $1.5B to settle lawsuit with book authors
"That could push the industry toward consolidation"

Based on history this is not a possibility but a certainty.

The larger players - who grew because of limited regulations - will start supporting stricter regulation and compliance structures in order to increase the barrier of entry with the excuse of "Oh we learned our lesson, you are right". The hypocrisy is crazy but it makes sense from a capitalistic perspective.

zinglersen··on xAI to pay telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app
It's the same reason for Google and xAI - they want user data and are more than happy to pay for it.
zinglersen··on Mistral OCR
Finding the right subreddit and asking there is probably a better approach if you want to maximize the chances of getting the plate 'decrypted'.
zinglersen··on LinkedIn is now using everyone's content to train their AI tool
User: "my dad just died"

AI: "Thats great, here are 10 B2B SaaS sales tricks to learn from a family death, first.."

zinglersen··on Marketing to Engineers (2001)
I'm late to the party but I wonder if this is the same for advanced/professional traders compared to retail investors. Thanks for sparking some thoughts !
zinglersen··on CSS Grid Areas
The interactive elements of the article made it click for me, the effort is much appreciated!
zinglersen··on How I won $2,750 using JavaScript, AI, and a can of WD-40
I'm surprisingly annoyed that I cannot guess what word you you are censoring, and AI wasn't helping much, mind spoiling it for me?

Also, I don't think you have to censor words here in general.

zinglersen··on Google Drive scans files for copyright infringement
Not really, otherwise services that host user-generated content, like youtube, wouldn't exist.

What a hosting service needs to provide is a way for the user to flag content + provide an "acceptable" response time.

Another approach, a more proactive approach, is for the content owners to share the digital "finger print" of the IP (movies, music, etc.) with the hosting service, so that the hosting service can scan uploaded files and compare them.

zinglersen··on Migrating Uber's ledger data from DynamoDB to LedgerStore
That's the beauty of it, you can choose to spend you money how you want!

You wouldn't want all your earnings to be in stocks, you want liquidity. For example investing your earned money into a public company, or buying food.

zinglersen··on Migrating Uber's ledger data from DynamoDB to LedgerStore
What.. they are taking a lot of risk...

But I guess we first have to agree on "who" we are taking about - is it the company itself or the owner / shareholders ?

Back to your question, yes that could happen in several different cases. But of course the risk/benefit is not split 50/50 (nor 0 risk, 100 upside, as you said), in reality the future outcome depends on both internal and external events.

Even the richest(?) man in the world was relatively close to loosing it all;

Musk, who had $200 million in cash at one point, invested “his last cent in his businesses” and said in a 2010 divorce proceeding, “About four months ago, I ran out of cash.” Musk told the New York Times https://www.cnbc.com/2017/04/27/the-crucial-decision-teslas-... https://archive.nytimes.com/dealbook.nytimes.com/2010/06/22/...

zinglersen··on Migrating Uber's ledger data from DynamoDB to LedgerStore
Losing your job because the outcome of your efforts (or even external events) is not what I would call the ultimate price.

"The metaverse division has now lost more than $45 billion since the end of 2020"

Your compensation for your work is your salery. So I would say that it's fair that the actual risk taker is benefiting from the potential rewards?

zinglersen··on Migrating Uber's ledger data from DynamoDB to LedgerStore
If a project fails, do you pay for the loss since you want a share of the profits as well?
zinglersen··on So you want to scrape like the big boys (2021)
I was under the (naive?) impression that Cloudflare a SaaS startup poster child. Do you mind expanding on your comment?
zinglersen··on Insider trade on Splunk acquisition?
After.
zinglersen··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
Figma literally changed my world so I couldn't disagree more.

Today I have +800 users and +100 editors in my Figma system; copy writers, ux, ui, ur, pm's, analysts, bizz, everyone, is collaborating like I have never seen in any Adobe setup.

Adobe hasn't even been a contender, meanwhile Figma won over Sketch and Invision as well. So while I agree that they are still missing some features, especially for shared design systems, then I don't understand your view, care to elaborate?

zinglersen··on Stop measuring community engagement
There are definitely some cases where it's important to use human-assessed metrics, like cooking a meal.

But if you are the size of Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, etc. it is too risky (and expensive) to let individuals define what success looks like - you need something measurable that you can spread to multiple projects or even across the complete company culture.

I fully agree with your point that metrics are typically not objective, like any data once it's used to communicate something.

So the question should be what metric(s), if not engagement in itself, should we measure for to create a healthy online community?

I wonder if it's less about metrics and more about principles; how does HN keep the level of quality so high? Is it because we share an interest? Because of the quality control? The UI/UX of the site? Something else?

zinglersen··on The story BCG offered me $16,000 not to tell (2010)
Do you have any insights on Neom?
zinglersen··on Free Unlimited Stock/Finance API
Sounds great!

Here are a few things to consider:

- Do some research on Google Finance and Yahoo Finance APIs and front-end

- The more data the better, so if you meta data, company sector, description, etc.

- Your range of instruments are important for other companies (stocks only? how many exchanges? etc.)

- Some users need live data and not delayed data

- Some users need frequent updates of price data (100/s)

- Not being able to trade on the data might limit the audience

- Most companies pay good money for the above so as mentioned you should check the license if you are allowed to share it.

I checked your website and your service sounds interesting but the barrier to learn more is quite high, and this link doesn't seem to work hubbleinvesting.com/StockAnalysis

I would also add better visual assets on the website, if you check out other digital product websites you'll see they use their acutal UI in their assets, ex. Figma, Slack, etc.

Anyway it's cool that you are up to share your data, I like it :)

zinglersen··on The age of Scrum is over
The empowered teams can't be a team of only developers. They need to consist of multi-disciplinary skill-sets from the three main areas (Business, Design, Engineering) based on the related domain.
zinglersen··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (May 2022)
I'm working on an app for donations to well-known NGOs, it's early days so I'm still trying to network and validate concepts with end-users and potential partners.

I have a background in business and design, so haven't started any development yet as I'm looking for a technical partner.

zinglersen··on Ask HN: Am I going insane or is there genuinely no value in blockchain tech?
I made the choice to use Firefox because of the monopolistic direction that we're headed, but I think it will become harder and harder to argue for Firefox.

I wonder if there is another way to create an information network that simplifies the user experience by scraping website code and reformatting it into a simple template with defined ux-patterns like navigation, font, text size, colors, buttons, links, media, etc. and excluding unwanted content like ads, filler bg images and such.

So basically creating a design system that you apply to all websites. The scaping/tagging would need to be smart and there would probably be a need for separate templates for some use cases (could twitter work?) but maybe the focus should be on information-driven sites like blogs, wiki, search, media, etc.

zinglersen··on Ask HN: A Good Idea?
The thinking is good but no one can verify the idea for you.

Travel data is an interesting data point for a lot of financial analysis, just to name a few:

- Hedge funds are tracking private jets to find the next-megadeal.

- Hedge funds are tracking frequency of delivery trucks going in and out of factories.

- Hedge funds are analyzing satellite images of parking spots outside of Walmart.

zinglersen··on Design Principles: An Open Source Collection
I recently sat down with my design team and went through the process of defining our design principles.

What I think a lot is missing is that 80% of the benefits actually are found within the process itself. This is because the team gets to reflect, discuss, and show their own thinking.

We had 6 sessions spread out over a couple of week with different exercises and it was time well spent, even disregarding the actual outcome (4 design principles).

zinglersen··on New exotic matter particle, a tetraquark, discovered at CERN
This was such a cool read, thank you!

What is hardest for me to comprehend is probably the last part about time being relative. All this stuff makes me think about how everything is made of the same matter and then, what am "I"?

Btw this part from the wiki link cracked me up "Constant acceleration is notable for several reasons: It is a fast form of travel."

zinglersen··on Artists, shrug off that imposter syndrome – the tech world needs you
There's definitely a market for UI designers (as well as visual designers).

"UI designer" as a job title basically means you as a designer have clear area of responsibility; the user interface. You find these role in larger companies because when you reach a certain scale you need to build design systems, digital and/or print style guides, asset frameworks, micro animations, etc.

Startups typically hire hybrid designers with a mix of UI and UX skills. In Scandinavia these roles are often called "UI/UX designers" and in US, where the design culture is more mature, it's sometimes called a "Product designer" and has a different set of responsibilities.

So the short answer is 'yes' but it depends on a lot of things like the size, maturity, and design org. within the company.

zinglersen··on Artists, shrug off that imposter syndrome – the tech world needs you
Another example of this is the investment app Robinhood. They make it so easy for beginners to start investing because they have removed all the cutter from their UI and UX - granted some would argue that it's too simple for the user's own good.
zinglersen··on Salesforce completes acquisition of Slack
I feel like this could be said about paid APIs as well? The ones purchasing/signing the contract (business) and the ones using the API (developers) have completely different 'needs'.
zinglersen··on The full story of the RSA hack can finally be told
It was a bit long-winded but I was thinking that it would make a great movie already in the first half.

Now I wonder if there are any cool SecOps movies or tv shows out there(?)

zinglersen··on Adverse Market Refinance Fee Implementation now December 1
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it's really interesting! Do you know if margin lending is profitable for the brokers if the borrowed money isn't re-invested? I'm thinking that the 2% is not a lot compared to the cost of providing the service.
zinglersen··on Ask HN: What weird or hard problems are you trying to solve?
I've had the same experience in larger corporations, especially the global ones. I'm interested in helping as well so if there's a need for concept development and ux let me know :)
