zerealshadowban··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
Learn Unix power tools, study their options (`man` is your friend) -- and use pipes to combine their powers.
zerealshadowban··on Anger Management
I have similar, extreme anger issues due to how I was mistreated in my childhood (both physical and mental abuse + abandonment). I get better, from time to time, and then I get worse, like a yoyo for half a century. I have made my peace with the thought that I'll never get out of it, because when my anger boils up it instantly burns every fibre of my mind and body. I worry that my children are unwittingly absorbing my anger. Thank you for writing this, and sharing with us.

Quelqu'un a-t-il jamais tenté de traduire le fameux « jargon file » en français?
zerealshadowban··on Hacking website like HN in French
Pas mal. « Fouineur » est plus proche, mais en général je me contente de dire « hackeur ».

Le vrai sens du mot n'est pas « pirate ».
zerealshadowban··on Trying out the Pinebook Pro – a $200 ARM Laptop
Yes, supply and demand are both relevant.

On the supply side, the very high cost of Intel CPUs has been adversely constraining the pricing flexibility of Mac computers. Apple sells orders of magnitude more iOS devices, all ARM-based; if they could sharply increase the sale of Mac computers, it would also be profitable for them -- and it might unify+simplify their software development efforts.

zerealshadowban··on Trying out the Pinebook Pro – a $200 ARM Laptop
This bodes well in terms of lower prices, better battery longevity, and incredible performance for the soon-coming ARM MacBooks.

zerealshadowban··on Explanation of the state of uBlock Origin and other blockers for Safari
I've made the same switch to AdGuard after upgrading to Safari 13, happy so far. (I've loved uBlock Origin for many years.)
zerealshadowban··on Boom Supersonic raises $100M, aims for 2019 test flights
"some random startup with no experience" -- what about the experience of the people who founded the company and those they have hired? does that count as "no experience"?

"to do the impossible" -- since you have not invested any money in this company, why does it bother you so much that they intend to achieve goals you don't believe in? how many people predicted failure for the Wright brothers?

I root for Boom and will applaud all their achievements, because I appreciate ambition and feel grateful to all ambitious entrepreneurs.

zerealshadowban··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
barring its revival, is there a macos tool to open/convert old FrameMaker documents? my PhD thesis and years of notes were archived in that format.
zerealshadowban··on US Is Net Oil Exporter for First Time in 75 Years
Isn't that typical of conversations between hackers?
zerealshadowban··on US Is Net Oil Exporter for First Time in 75 Years
dorfsmay wrote "to ship from producing site" then gave Sweden and Saudi Arabia as example producing sites.

The only operational, limited extraction of oil in Sweden took place in Gotland, until 1993. The remnants of that activity have now become historical markers. The Swedish government agency of statistics reported in 2016 that there is absolutely no production of crude oil in Sweden ("I Sverige sker ingen produktion av råolja."). [1] Who should we trust on this, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, or the Swedish government?

Not sure why all of this is so arresting.

zerealshadowban··on US Is Net Oil Exporter for First Time in 75 Years
The point is a mix of mineral and monarchical accuracy.

Norway is a significant oil producer and exporter, worthy of mention together with Saudi Arabia in the context of discussing oil producers (potentially) exporting crude oil to the US; not Sweden. Norway was in a (forced) union of kingdoms with Sweden until 1906, so someone referring to Sweden as an oil producer may only be somewhat right if 1906 had not happened. hth

zerealshadowban··on US Is Net Oil Exporter for First Time in 75 Years
Indeed that's the point, not being a producer of oil by extraction.
zerealshadowban··on US Is Net Oil Exporter for First Time in 75 Years
Sweden is not an oil producer.
zerealshadowban··on US Is Net Oil Exporter for First Time in 75 Years
Indeed, "import" and "export" are merely nation-based lenses on regular trade. If you make the lens small enough, you or your family unit are "importing" all sorts of foods and products, and "exporting" a few mostly labor and services (you also have a terrific "trade imbalance" with your favorite baker and grocery store).
zerealshadowban··on US Is Net Oil Exporter for First Time in 75 Years
I would strongly recommend not attempting to contract for or ship oil extracted in Sweden to the USA, or to anywhere else in the world. Unless you premise this on holding that Norway should never have gotten its independence 100+ years ago.
zerealshadowban··on Ask HN: If you woke up tomorrow and it is 18th century, what would you do?

This would be an easy thing to do and everyday occurrence if we had proper, first-class-citizen transclusion [1] mechanisms as part of the Web standards and their implementations.

zerealshadowban··on Tumblr will ban all adult content on December 17th
Interesting how the presentation of healthy sexuality and eroticism in US culture increasingly suffers under a joint assault by neo-puritans, radical feminists, middle-of-the-road advertisers, and gender-smashing warriors. By the gods, even at the gym the vast majority of Americans feel they must cover their body with towels when walking to/from the showers, and those who don't are eyed with suspicion. Similar trends are present in e.g. Sweden and France where the depiction of beautiful women in ads is now a socio-political problem.

I wish for our cultures to look for inspiration to the Ancient Greeks' fundamental love of the human body and soul; some of which we can observe in the sculptures that have survived (not the beefy Roman copies); and some of the perspectives one may gather from surviving poetry, tales of normal nudity in social activities, and benevolent jokes about sex.

zerealshadowban··on Climate Solutions: Is It Feasible to Remove Enough CO2 from the Air?
Yes, there are many commercial greenhouses that operate year-round, including the summer months. The deliberately increased level of CO2 in a commercial greenhouse has no measurable thermodynamic impact.
zerealshadowban··on Mitochondrial DNA can come from both parents
The number of base pairs in human mtDNA is not a subject of scientific ignorance nor of dispute; it has been known for decades. [1] This kind of objection is unproductive, and indicates one may benefit from personal study of the subject instead of arbitrarily casting doubt.

zerealshadowban··on Fixed – Fixed-place decimal math library for Go
Hypothesis: eventually all programming languages either add a library for fixed-place decimal maths, or revise the language to take care of it.

Ada had proper fixed point types in 1983 already, and added additional requirements for the implementation of decimal fixed point types as part of the 1995 language revision. Other languages ... may benefit from its example.

zerealshadowban··on Climate Solutions: Is It Feasible to Remove Enough CO2 from the Air?
The distinction between proximate and ultimate causes is deeply relevant for science and scientists.

For instance, when oceans change, such as el nino, la nina, reversals of enduring currents, or even new connections between seas due to tectonic transformations, that is properly a cause of climate change -- regardless of how much that change is, in fine, mediated by the atmosphere. Atmospheric changes are demonstrably not the only, nor the ultimate causes, of climate change.
