zerealshadowban··on British drivers over 70 to face eye tests every three years
My mother completely stopped driving in her early 70s... thank god for the Swiss medical driving fitness test! (now at 75 instead of 70?) she was perfectly fine with it, online food order+delivery had become available, and her immediate neighbors were loving people helping her whenever I+siblings were not easily available.

zerealshadowban··on I'm a Therapist. ChatGPT Is Eerily Effective
I've personally had very satisfying results experimenting with several distinct therapy approaches, simply instructing the AI to analyze my story or dream according to this or that school of thought, ask clarifying questions, and suggest work I should do to improve (Gottman couples therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Jungian analysis, even Nathaniel Branden's self-esteem therapy, you name it...). I initially tried it out with AI because I couldn't find any Jungian therapist in-company-insurance-network in my metro area.
zerealshadowban··on Can adults grow new brain cells?
Isn't it well established that pregnant women host new brain cells that migrate from the fetus?
zerealshadowban··on Red Programming Language
ah, this is not about the Red Language that Intermetrics designed in 1977-79 to satisfy the Steelman requirements of the DoD's High Order Language Working Group... (the Green Language won and became known as Ada).

I thought maybe someone had put the DoD's Red language spec online.

And yes, someone has: https://iment.com/maida/computer/redref/

zerealshadowban··on Ask HN: How do you monetize personal code if it's not an "app"?
Consulting is the way to make money from specialized tools and code that you can't or don't want to turn into market commodity. Make sure you charge for the value you deliver to your clients, not the time it takes you to run your tools for them. Look into value-based consulting, e.g. the book "Value-Based Fees" by Alan Weiss. I've been doing this with my own tools and tailored code for a good decade, sometimes pulling in multiple 6-figure projects in a year. Good luck!

zerealshadowban··on Show HN: Transputer emulator in JavaScript (fast enough to be useful)
I have fond memories of implementing a variety of parallelized search algorithms with Occam for the one Transputer we had at the school lab. I loved it. The professors and TAs thought I was nuts.
zerealshadowban··on Laser-based device can scan almost any sample of gas and tell you what's in it
It seems that the frequency comb laser is easy to diy! "NIST Shows How to Make a Compact Frequency Comb in Minutes" (2013) [0]. I can think of many applications apart from the medical diagnosis they talk about.

The varying mirror cavity is today's innovative step, plus the computation to identify atoms and molecules from the observation of color absorption.

zerealshadowban··on Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to Lead Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)
Yes, every 4 years the American people get the President they deserve.
zerealshadowban··on Sunlight and Vitamin D (2013)
Consider a one-week trip to Hawaii in the darkest time of winter; supplementation studies have shown that the body can safely absorb and store 100K IU, that it takes about 2 months to deplete such an amount. Your skin produces 20k IU in 30 minutes on a sunny day at the beach (wearing a swimsuit). If you're in the PNW (or central Europe at the Southern German border) your skin cannot produce vitD from October through April because of how low the sun is in the sky even at its zenith.
zerealshadowban··on Sunlight and Vitamin D (2013)
If you decide to supplement vitD in winter time note that US government recommendations are way too low [1][2] compared to normal practices in Nordic countries: should be daily 3000 IU for kids (toddlers and up) and 8000 IU for adults.

[1] It's not sufficient for kids to take the bare minimum that avoids rickets. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3476526/)

zerealshadowban··on Got called to a professor’s office after a complaint his SPARC4 was running slow
for OS class we had to write a distributed game on top of the Andrew File System; debugging a nasty crash I managed to distill our team's code down to 10 lines to remotely crash/reboot any chosen AFS workstation on campus; thus I regularly emptied workstation rooms at CMU (most students just gave up after a couple of sudden computer reboots) so that CS friends could work on and finish their homework; I may have also crashed some professor workstations from time to time, idk
zerealshadowban··on Air quality reporting on iOS
I've been using the PurpleAir website (map.purpleair.com) for many years now, mostly out of concern for heavy wildfire pollution and winter inversions vs personal outdoor+athletic activities; one interesting aspect is that you can buy your own sensor and thus join the community of local sensors for increased accuracy of measurements. They let you pick between various international standards and types of pollutants. They seem to have a dense network of sensors in North America, not sure about the rest of the world.
zerealshadowban··on All Those Naked Greeks
Strength Through Joy (KdF) was not the same as FKK. KdF was focused on the "beauty of labor", middle-class leisure, physical health, and (domestic) tourism.
zerealshadowban··on All Those Naked Greeks
Freikörperkultur (FKK) has roots in the 19th century Lebensreform reactionary movement, and got an official structure as of 1898, so it predates the division of Germany into BRD and DDR by several generations.
zerealshadowban··on Notes on Vision Pro
Yes! this book is a first-person account of product development at Apple, showing how both the design and the features of a system tool keep progressing under the selective pressure of iterative review sessions, with creative and specific challenges provided by managers at multiple levels, all the way to the top (Steve Jobs at the time of the book's tales). It's a great book, very well written, the only one I've read that provides insight into (some of) Apple's creative process. When they say that Steve's DNA has profoundly shaped the company, I imagine this is one aspect of what they mean.
zerealshadowban··on PyPI Was Subpoenaed
They log too much data about their users.

So they should promptly update their policies to a) stop logging so much, b) delete all past logs, and c) sharply limit the span of time until deletion of whatever logs they decide they really need to track for internal needs.

They should avoid logging, and rapidly rotate logs, to thwart future subpoenas from the total surveillance state.

zerealshadowban··on Let there be more biographies of failures
Yes, the populist-biography kind of writing you describe is unsatisfactory, to say the least; the reason I point to Petroski's work is that he did not write like that.

Another great book to read to examine modes of engineering failure is Feynman's "What Do You Care What Other People Think?" which includes some of his thoughts on the Challenger disaster.

zerealshadowban··on Let there be more biographies of failures
Henry Petroski has written several excellent essays and books about engineering failures, why it is inherent in engineering pursuits that there will be failures, why it is important to learn the right lessons from these failures, and why each new generation will forget past lessons.

Start with: "To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design" (1985)

zerealshadowban··on Life's vast diversity defies easy definition
Life is a self-generated process of self-sustaining action. "If an organism fails in that action, it dies; its chemical elements remain, but its life goes out of existence."
zerealshadowban··on Babies' random choices become their preferences
An attempt at an explanation: value is what we in fact act to gain or keep, from the simplest to the most complex objects or relations; what we have previously gained or kept is automatically recorded as a value in our mind; and thus will be emotionally perceived as a preference in the future. Some values can be and are deliberately chosen, but many are not.
zerealshadowban··on Milton Glaser, designer of ‘I ♥ NY’ logo, has died
I always "read" it in my mind as I <heart> NY, not I <love> NY.
zerealshadowban··on My family saw a police car hit a kid, then I learned how NYPD impunity works
I've seen police abuse innocent people, multiple times, which should be lesson enough. More importantly, I've been falsely accused of assault by a Federal officer, and had to spend all my savings on a lawyer to fight it (one year of fear and hell, until they finally produced the video showing I had done nothing but sit in my car while answering his questions).

I don't want to live in anarchy, but I don't want to live in fear. Help.
