zenonu··on Unifi Travel Router
Playing with fire. It could be potentially construed as an attempt to steal personal info.
zenonu··on Mark Zuckerberg freezes AI hiring amid bubble fears
Worthy if its own hacker news post. Would love to see it.
zenonu··on Figma files for proposed IPO
The alternative is enshittification of the entire product lineup to include ads, exorbitant subscription prices, reduced functionality along a painful price gradient, morphing into a dopamine social product, or a goal to rent real-life assets for to an increasingly impoverished population. Pee in your piss bottle while delivering that Amazon package until we can figure out how to automate your job away too. The shareholders demand it!
zenonu··on New US visa rules will force foreign students to unlock social media profiles
... and then there's a falling out in your friends circle, and someone is reported.
zenonu··on Waymo rides cost more than Uber or Lyft and people are paying anyway
100%. I've discovered the floor: Small cars that probably aren't safe, trashed interior, and drivers who smell of literally every vice while talking on the phone AND playing whatever music all together. "Premium" is simply not that experience.
zenonu··on Pi-hole v6
Running w/ my opnsense router. All-in-one.
zenonu··on A comparison to Waymo’s auto liability insurance claims at 25M miles
There's a future, not in the short-term, where 99% of folks don't need to or want to own a car. You hail a ride, and a vehicle shows up, perhaps with 3 of people in the vehicle in their own bubble internally designed into the car. You get in, it drops offs others in the vehicle, and then finally drops you off. The vehicle exhausts its entire electric charge, recharges, and then gets back on the road. The number of vehicles on the road is down 50%.
zenonu··on Python 3.13.0 Is Released
I'm constrained by libraries with guaranteed version compatibility. Unless you're operating in NIH universe, I bet you are as well.
zenonu··on July 2024 Update on Instability Reports on Intel Core 13th/14th Gen Desktop CPUs
Why even publish a comparison? Raptor Lake processors aren't a functioning product to benchmark against.
zenonu··on Starving to Death on a Full Stomach
Could there a be a future where consumption is met with equal parts restoration and environmental investment by the companies themselves? I'd like a progressive system where whole foods nutrition, clean water, shelter, and medical care is subsidized below cost, but then everything else requires us to pony up when purchasing.
zenonu··on Starving to Death on a Full Stomach
And yet here you are.
zenonu··on Intel Processor Instability Causing Oodle Decompression Failures
Intel is already running their CPUs at the red line. We're seeing the margin breaking down as Intel tries to remain competitive. The latest 14900KS can even pull > 400W. It's utter insanity.
zenonu··on WiFi 7 is officially here, but routers are pricey. Do you need it yet
I wonder why many don't consider working with a lot of data off of a NAS that could benefit from the cleaner network setup. 6Ghz is also clearly helpful as an early adopter.
zenonu··on Scar tissues make relationships wear out (2013)
After I took ownership of my home, I cataloged over 100 issues that needed to be attended to post-construction. I want a home without obvious in-your-face-faults. The construction crew wanted to finish and move onto the next project. Our incentives were not aligned, and that's the problem.

Next time, I'm specifically going to ensure another contractor is hired to ensure QC of the home during construction. No moving onto the next stage until the 1 foot hole in the subfloor caused by a falling drill from the 2nd story is fixed.

zenonu··on Scar tissues make relationships wear out (2013)
Letting go is so important because it what lets you move on. Without letting go, I've seen people who anticipate the situation happening again every time the context is the same. They relive the stress/situation even though nothing bad is actually happening, and then resent their partner once more for it. It's a never-ending cycle of pain and anger. Please just make the decision to leave it!
zenonu··on Add 10 GbE to your system with an M.2 2280 module
All of my 10g equipment is silent or near silent. Most recent purchase is the TP-Link TL-SX105. Take another look the next time you redo your home network. At least consider multi-gigabit.
zenonu··on Why is U.S. labor supply so low?
Additionally, companies do not have a right to exist. If your business needs to pay minimum wage, profits are thin, and employees are quitting to find something better, it probably shouldn't be a thing any more. There isn't a labor shortage - your business isn't providing enough value for the labor it requires.
zenonu··on Why Wolfram tech isn’t open source (2019)
Multiple comments here talking about releasing the source code, as if it's just throwing it over the wall. Open-sourcing software successfully is a commitment to engage with the community on design and implementation over time. Otherwise at best it will be forked and then then lead by another group.
zenonu··on Plans for a new city in the American desert
This new city most likely depends on getting necessary regulatory and code approvals that would be impossible elsewhere. There's also a reason why towns become ghost towns, and the investors putting in $400B in funding probably don't want to start with one foot in the metaphorical grave.
zenonu··on Paris to ‘get rid of 70k parking spaces’
It'd be interesting to follow the particulate levels in Paris before and after this change occurs.
zenonu··on Installing FreeNAS on my QNAP TS-459
Looking at FreeNAS's page, it's all "Get Quote" nonsense for anything rack mounted. Needs a system configuration page with prices to play around with.
zenonu··on He Has 17,700 Bottles of Hand Sanitizer and Nowhere to Sell Them
We (the guy in the article and myself) live in a nation where insurance companies would rather see you die than pay out, insulin is $350/bottle when it's $7 to produce, and politicians that we elect are entirely for it all. We have ourselves to blame for setting the moral standard.
zenonu··on Bugatti has broken the 300mph barrier
This is an extremely narrow point of view, and one that actually hinders the support of properly dealing with climate change.

Halo car engineering results in trickle down effects to all of the vehicles you and I drive on a daily basis. Tire materials and engineering, aerodynamics r&d, suspension improvements, and so forth can apply to all types of vehicles, regardless of whether or not the power comes from an ICE engine or electric motor.

So while you may see this as a needless exercise in achieving 300 mph on a combustion engine, I see this as perhaps something that could give a 1% increase in fuel economy to VAG's entire fleet. Of course it's not a given, but let's applaud and support the potential.

zenonu··on Thinkpad X210
Strawman. Nobody claimed the ATX standard enabled innovation. It enabled the reduction of e-waste as OP indicated. Think of this the next time you trash your innovative phone or laptop because the non-user replaceable battery/ram/ssd/display/whatever failed.
zenonu··on Understanding contravariance
We have metrics such as cyclomatic complexity, however they don't connect with software engineers yet to drive decision making from my experience.
zenonu··on Teen monitoring apps don't work, and drive a wedge between teens and parents
When I was 15, I discovered Usenet and the various binaries subgroups. This was beyond what my folks understood was on the PC. Your son will access content beyond your current understanding as well. Additionally, you might have a monitor on the PCs you own, but you don't have a monitor on his friends PCs either. The monitoring game is already lost. You indicate a loss of trust, but it goes both ways. There's absolutely no way he's going to tell you anything now that you've dealt the monitoring card. He's not going to thank you in the future. He's simply not going to say anything about it.
zenonu··on Open-sourcing a 10x reduction in Apache Cassandra tail latency
Exactly. Immediately from the premise of the paper, I was looking forward to a discussion on how they tried various strategies to tune their JVM/GC parameters and found nothing. The "well I guess we gotta replace this with a C++ solution" sentiment smacks of poor software engineering practice, despite the results.
zenonu··on Dropbox saved almost $75M over two years by moving out of AWS
What would be the cost difference moving to Google Cloud or other cloud provider? The reason why I'm asking is that the move itself requires a re-consideration of all production configuration. The indicated savings assumes that Dropbox was using Amazon 100% efficiently to begin with.
zenonu··on The Death of Microservice Madness in 2018
The key to microservices is a framework and tooling around them to make them work for you. Release management, AuthN/AuthZ, compilation, composition, service lookup, etc. should all be "out-of-the-box" before microservices should ever be considered. Otherwise the O(n) gains you get in modularity turn into O(n) FML.
zenonu··on A French wine trade war
A greater understanding of the process and supply chain that affects the products going into our body will be for the best. For any wine, if it was clear where the grapes are grown, and where the wine was made, it'd give me greater confidence in the product. This is especially true if it's a value-oriented bottle.
