zenincognito··on AI Crawler Index
AI crawlers made 23% of our bot traffic in the last 30 days. Google is not the only one crawling aggressively now.
zenincognito··on 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: Deisseroth, Hegemann, Nagel
It's a rule in the Nobel Foundation's statutes added in 1968, a provision that no more than three persons may share a Nobel prize. In practice no science prize had gone to more than three people before that either. In medicine it usually means one or two key contributors get left out, as with Boyden and Bamberg this year.

zenincognito··on Meta Deployed AI and It Is Killing Our Agency
>We have contacted Meta support dozens of times over the past 30 days. Each representative confirmed that account creation and monitoring are now handled almost entirely by AI. Despite successfully completing required face verifications, our accounts continue to be flagged and banned by automated parameters. There is currently no path for manual intervention; even internal support tickets are failing to reach human reviewers with the authority to resolve these systemic blocks.

>Oh nvm. They're full-time clickbaiters... what else did I expect.

There is nothing clickbait about this article. I fail to understand why take such a hostile approach to something on the internet where you completely miss the point under contention - auto account bans via AI

zenincognito··on SEMRush is engaging in the most common type of SEO spam – scaled content abuse
Specifically from the Google release (1)

We’ve long had a policy against using automation to generate low-quality or unoriginal content at scale with the goal of manipulating search rankings. This policy was originally designed to address instances of content being generated at scale where it was clear that automation was involved.

Today, scaled content creation methods are more sophisticated, and whether content is created purely through automation isn’t always as clear. To better address these techniques, we’re strengthening our policy to focus on this abusive behavior — producing content at scale to boost search ranking — whether automation, humans or a combination are involved. This will allow us to take action on more types of content with little to no value created at scale, like pages that pretend to have answers to popular searches but fail to deliver helpful content.

zenincognito··on As the public begins to believe Google isn’t as useful, what happens to SEO?
Politely, and with due respect, I consider myself "out of touch" for most things that I don't do on a day to day basis or those that are NOT my livelihood.
zenincognito··on As the public begins to believe Google isn’t as useful, what happens to SEO?
SEO agency owner here. Have been in the agency game for over 15 years. For whatever it's worth, here are my 2 cents.

Business is booming. Not exactly dying as indicated here in the HN circles because obviously HN crowd is much further ahead in the curve. SEO is still the number one opted channel by most ecommerce stores because keywords like "red party dress" or "green shoes" are still immensely more valuable and bring ton of revenue every day.

Ofcourse, Google is trying hard to monetize every little real estate but still a ton of keywords don't have any advertisers at all. Optimizing for these has been the number#1 revenue maker in the past 3 years.

The other aspect of this the "paid ads" also immensely valuable to advertisers. We have people spending 3 million dollars a month on paid ads returning 8X ROAS. Google & FB are still the most lucrative channels for ecommerce.

zenincognito··on Some thoughts about The Verge article on SEO
I have been in this industry just 5 years shy of Danny.

Danny was a big critic of Google back in the days. What he doesn't realise is that Google has deployed the oldest trick in the book. They took the most prominent critic in the industry and made him into their spokesman. Effectively, leveraging a lot of goodwill he holds in the industry into their own.

I am not saying what Danny is saying is untrue or has malice. I am just saying that Google search has deteriorated immensely and is skewed to about 100 sites that dominate it competely. There is very little space for small business or genuine knowledgespeak unless you have a big budget to churn our content. Just look at Google's testimony in the recent antitrust case and you can see what Google says via the liasion team is opposite to how SEO actually works. Ex - Google using click data but constantly saying for over a decade they don't use the click data.

zenincognito··on Joining CSV Data Without SQL: An IP Geolocation Use Case
Have found that to be the most succesful amongst a horde of other tools tried.. I have had no problems with file as big as 8-10 gigs as I can allocate more memory to the program as I see fit.

Honestly, given that I can use grel/clojure/python inside to clean up and mangle data seems to make it the swiss knife of data segmentation/cleanup.

zenincognito··on Joining CSV Data Without SQL: An IP Geolocation Use Case
Or, you can also use openrefine from Google.

Currently mangling a 4 GB file and working with api's that use existing data columns to provide output.. Its a great tool.

zenincognito··on Mozilla.ai
Just another wasted effort. It looks like Mozilla has completely lost its way.

I get that the AI is going to be important in the next decade but Mozilla has shown that despite having a clear competitive advantage in something it cannot continue to grow. I don't mean to devalue what Mozilla is doing but its browser is completely ususable on my Linux Mint 20 with a high end graphics card. Compare that to chrome which works like a breeze.

Although I champion open source & privacy at my org - I cannot but for the sake of my own productivity use any Mozilla product despite repeated attempts every quarter to try if it works better now...

He bought the company. The company is now private. Why is this controversial or interesting ?

I simply don't get this line of debate or discussion at all? Granted that Twitter has a bigger size but so is TikTok and countless other companies like Reddit.

Great article.

The author would have also saved a lot of costs if he had enrolled in one of those startup programs.

Some of the ones that are great include - YC's own startup program where you get links to deals - Segments startup program.

Both of these give access to $5K in aws credit last time I checked. Plus it has free usage for twilio and stripe. First 5K ins tripe billing is free.

zenincognito··on Man sues American Airlines over identification, jail time
>>>Instead, American Airlines “departed from its established procedures,” according to the lawsuit, and sent police a single passenger’s information — Lowe’s.

If an innocent man goes to jail, the penalties should be so profound that it hurts. They should be levied a billion dollar penalty and I would say even that would be generous.

zenincognito··on Earn $200K by fuzzing for a weekend: Part 1
>>It would be bad form of me to not explain the incredible flexibility shown by Solana in terms of how they handled my payout. I intended to donate the funds to the Texas A&M Cybersecurity Club, at which I gained a lot of the skills necessary to perform this research and these exploits, and Solana was very willing to sidestep their listed policy and donate the funds directly in USD rather than making me handle the tokens on my own, which would have dramatically affected how much I could have donated due to tax. So, despite my concerns regarding their policy, I was very pleased with their willingness to accommodate my wishes with the bounty payout.

I am not sure how old the author is but I find these donations incredibly generous and sometimes fail to comrehend such generosity. Sure you got an education at this place but was it worth 200K ? I am not trying to look at the action of the author in any disdain but am genuinely amazed at how such a young person will have such tremendous generosity.

zenincognito··on Decision: Red Hat, Inc. vs. Daniel Pocock / Software Freedom Institute SA
>>The domain name is not used in bad faith, given that the web site directs people back to the trademark owner's site, doesn't ask for money, doesn't run banner advertising, doesn't ask for personal registration. It has been demonstrated that the trademark owner is suppressing the blogs of some volunteers with authorship rights and Respondent’s site exists to give those voices an equal status. The founding documents published by the trademark owner (Exhibit 104) encourage us to give voice to all sides.

We are a 30 people team with 10 reps on the floor. We use pipedrive and the bar to win a smaller team like us is set too high. We currently pay $2500 P/M but with this tactic, I suspect you will never win my business.

I am a little bugged by how you tricked me into signing up, asked my details including a phone number but then made me book in a time with your team. This is deception in my opinion. You asked me whether I wanted a free trial, which I did. I signed up but now I have to speak to someone to get it ? Why not say that upfront then ?
