zarq··on IoT Unravelled Part 1: It's a Mess but Then There's Home Assistant
If anything, this is a reason why you need multiple temperature sensors.

zarq··on Missing Covid-19 test data was caused by the ill-thought-out use of Excel
"We should maybe start tracking some of this" "Where does the data come from?" "Dunno, a handful of hospitals... maybe?" "Right. Let's just use Excel, not gonna waste time on that now"

... six months later ...

"Hey um..."

zarq··on I accidentally built a nudity/porn platform
Ironically, there is another side to this too: you have to teach people that if they want a response, they need to include relevant information that relates to the person you are reaching out to, a "serious-looking" e-mail address, a proper greeting, good grammar...

Especially young professionals struggle to understand why any of this is important, and are left wondering why they are not getting a response.

zarq··on Wiki Bankruptcy
Agree. What you need for most content is not structure; what you need is really great search and discovery tools.
zarq··on Georgia School Reopening Photo Even Worse Than It Appears
I have trouble understanding why this prevents anyone from taking legal action. Maybe the action cannot be directed against the schools, but surely in this case you can challenge the CDC guidelines, because there seems to be direct proof of personal injury (i.e. getting ill) as a result of this? How does this work?
zarq··on Some auto insurers are sending refunds to customers as crash rate falls
This makes me worried for what happens when folks are getting back on the streets. Everybody will have forgotten how to drive properly, and have to get back into the habits.
zarq··on My years working on black programs
A lot of well-known, early programmers had PhD. Not all though.
zarq··on Chicago book returns surge 240% after city eliminates fines
Plus, the library is now a financial institution: it has to manage that money on behalf of its customers.
zarq··on Medieval people bathed regularly
What religion would that be?
zarq··on FaceApp Now Owns Access to More Than 150M People's Faces and Names
https://tosdr.org/ -- it's not automated, but it's a start. Also FaceApp isn't listed.
zarq··on Dear Bureaucrat, my job wants me to lie
Careful, the surprise may be fake, because it was struck out and you both had to initial--if it was so weird, why did they just not give you a new copy that didn't have the clause?
zarq··on Interviews with developers who became managers
Make it a team effort. Distribute resume reviews & interviews.
zarq··on Windows 98 Icons are Great (2015)
I find indicator lights, if they only have the purpose of conveying something that's already obvious in some other way (e.g. "the computer is on"-led plus a monitor that's clearly saying it is) fairly useless. I'm glad that most devices nowadays don't have them and are completely dark even when they're on.

And to your comment about cars, it seems to be more about pedestrians that can know about an oncoming vehicle and less about whether the user thinks it's running. The latter seems to be something that can be easily fixed.

zarq··on OpenBSD: New console font Spleen made default
Not sure if it's my browser, but the dashes in the example are rendered with anti-aliasing below them. That is going to suck after a while, a dash should only have on-off pixels, nothing inbetween.
zarq··on German traffic light stays red for 28 years (2015)
I've seen cases where the 'stop' sign is just a red circle, and then it changes to a green arrow pointing to the right when you're free to go.
zarq··on The absolute horror of WiFi light switches
The most prominent real innovation I can think of is to not have light switches at all. It should be possible to have some heat/motion detection system hooked up to the lights, so that you don't actually ever have to manually turn the lights on or off any more. For bedrooms, I can even think of something that links to the alarm clock.
zarq··on Show HN: Super Mail Forward, an HTML email that evolves as you forward it
Should be the other way around. You forward an email that's "obviously" spam, and then the abuse guys go "what do you mean, this is a regular project status update!"
zarq··on World map of the difference between solar and clock time
What always bothers me in maps like these is how ridiculously detailed the shorelines are. Who cares that you can see individual islands off the southern coast of Chile?
zarq··on How to implement a spreadsheet
Back in 2000, a winner of the International Obfuscated C Code Contest (IOCCC), had an implementation of an X-based graphical spreadsheet in 2kB of very unreadable C: http://www.ioccc.org/2000/jarijyrki.c . Details here: http://www.ioccc.org/2000/jarijyrki.hint
