> Stop using the site immediately and consult a qualified ophthalmologist. Seriously, no static display on a modern and correctly adjusted VDU such as a computer monitor or phone screen should ever be inducing headaches or eyestrain in a healthy individual when properly used for reasonable time periods, and with sufficient breaks. If it is, you may have an underlying health condition which has otherwise gone un-noticed.

So they’re saying that they’re aware that their website is inaccessible to some people with certain health conditions, and they don’t intend to do anything about it.

That’s like if a grocery store with a staircase at the front door put up a sign that says, “If you have trouble climbing these stairs, consult your doctor. No person with healthy legs should have trouble climbing these stairs. You may have a health condition.”

I mean, thanks for the advice, but you’re still excluding people.

zagrebian··on Tables no longer needed for HTML email
On iOS, Apple Mail supports 92% of the tested HTML/CSS features, while Gmail supports only 36%. What browser engine does Gmail use to have such poor results? Isn’t it all WebKit on iOS?

zagrebian··on Tailwind CSS v3.3
Isn’t it ironic that the first section talks about extended color palettes, but their website does not honor my CSS (prefers-color-scheme: light) preference when I visit that page with JavaScript disabled. There is a moon icon in the upper right, but it’s broken without JS.
zagrebian··on Push notifications are now supported cross-browser
The entire browser shouldn’t have to run in the background just to receive push messages. If a browser really does that, that’s pretty bad.
zagrebian··on Push notifications are now supported cross-browser
> every major browser silently installs itself into the startup process when you enable any browser push notification on Windows

Don’t they already do that for automatic background updates anyway?

zagrebian··on Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought
> it's probably unique enough a subgroup to sell ads to

I have been browsing with JavaScript disabled by default for the past 6 months. Based on my experience, no-JavaScript ads are rarer than four-leaf clover.

> The Chromium team shouldn't have the absolute authority to shoot down would-be standards like this

I’m not sure that “the Chromium team” is a real thing. Chromium is a cross-company project. People from different companies and different teams work on it together. Google has a Chrome team.

edit: I’m not familiar with the Google JPEG-XL situation, but generally speaking, it should be possible to ship a feature in Chromium without Google’s involvement because there are three non-Google Blink API owners (last time I checked).

zagrebian··on WebGPU Error Handling best practices
The Feedbro browser extension has a “Find feeds in current tab” feature. If the web page declares a feed in its source code, Feedbro will probably find it. When Feedbro doesn’t find anything, I ask here.

zagrebian··on How the cover art of Defender of the Crown (1986) was made (2013)
Maybe the NES version was harder. I sucked at everything: the raids, the bombardments, the jousting, the battles. I couldn’t do anything right and would pretty much always die before turn 10.
zagrebian··on How the cover art of Defender of the Crown (1986) was made (2013)
Anecdote: When I was a kid in the ’90s in Germany, I once went to a mega store to buy a NES game on discount. My final choice was between Defender of the Crown and, if I remember correctly, Wizards & Warriors 3, and I picked Defender based on the box art. Bad choice. In all my childhood years, I was never able to figure out how to play this game well.

Reminds me of that joke about a study where they shoved 20 joints into a chimpanzee’s mouth and then proclaimed that marijuana is very bad.
zagrebian··on The <Dialog> Element
Not a chance. The websites with the worst popups probably couldn’t care less about something like <dialog>. It’s all <div> and JavaScript for them.

zagrebian··on Orion Browser
If facebook.com loads ads from fbcdn.net (also owned by Facebook), is the ad first or third party?
zagrebian··on Orion Browser
What do they mean by first-party ads vs. third-party ads? They are suggesting that Brave is not blocking first-party ads. I find that hard to believe.

zagrebian··on Show HN: I'm a doctor and made a responsive breathing app for stress and anxiety
This website loads scripts from eight other websites:

1. googleapis.com

2. cloudfront.net

3. embedly.com

4. google.com

5. googletagmanager.com

6. sibforms.com

7. vimeo.com

8. webflow.com

Which of these are required for the app to function?

zagrebian··on Omg.lol – A lovable web page and email address
It’s probably somewhere in the middle. When YOLO became popular a decade ago, most millennials were already in their mid-twenties, and the way I see it, new internet slang always “belongs” to the youth, and that was Gen Z at that time.
zagrebian··on Omg.lol – A lovable web page and email address
Gen Z is probably asking why there’s no .yolo domain suffix yet.

zagrebian··on Gripes with RSS after one week
I use the Feedbro browser extension. It continuously fetches feeds in the background. The UI is blazingly fast (think HTML version of Gmail). It automatically marks viewed entries. It’s very configurable. It can find feeds on the current page. I love it. Much better than Feedly.
