zagrebian··on Louis Rossmann opines on the Firefox debacle [video]
There are more than enough things to complain about. If somebody wants to have a YouTube channel where they just complain, why is that a problem?
zagrebian··on Eating less can lead to a longer life: study in mice shows why
There was a Veritasium video about these two modes. Survival mode is triggered not just by food scarcity, but also by extreme heat, extreme cold, and one other thing (I forgot).
zagrebian··on Starting today, YouTube is almost unusable on Firefox
They use it but in Chrome on a maxed out MacBook Pro
zagrebian··on Japan: The land that doesn't need Ozempic
There are many options: couscous, rice, air-fried potatoes, even pure popcorn (raw corn + vegetable oil) is healthy and very filling.
zagrebian··on They Live
Watched it last year. The premise is great, but I thought that the acting was very poor.
zagrebian··on Please don't share our links on Mastodon
Sounds like web performance optimization is more important than ever.
zagrebian··on Hardest problem in computer science: centering things
But is it really worth fixing these things? What do you achieve by spending time and money to fix these details, other than making users slightly less annoyed by your design? Maybe these details are not fixed because they don’t really matter that much. Have you ever stopped using an app because a button or icon was slightly misaligned?
zagrebian··on Some notes on Firefox’s media autoplay settings in practice as of Firefox 124
configs the user changed != values in bold do not match their default or do not exist by default
zagrebian··on Some notes on Firefox’s media autoplay settings in practice as of Firefox 124
It would be useful if Firefox recorded which configs the user changed. Imagine if you could view a chronological, tabular list of all configs that you changed. Name, default value, changed value, date.
zagrebian··on Airbus electric air taxi makes its debut
Explain like I’m five: Why do these modern electric helicopters have many small rotors, but traditional helicopters have only one big horizontal rotor? If many small rotors is more efficient, why haven’t non-electric helicopters done it?
zagrebian··on The Digital Markets Act is in force What happens now?
“UPDATE: Previously, Apple announced plans to remove the Home Screen web apps capability in the EU as part of our efforts to comply with the DMA. The need to remove the capability was informed by the complex security and privacy concerns associated with web apps to support alternative browser engines that would require building a new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS.

We have received requests to continue to offer support for Home Screen web apps in iOS, therefore we will continue to offer the existing Home Screen web apps capability in the EU. This support means Home Screen web apps continue to be built directly on WebKit and its security architecture, and align with the security and privacy model for native apps on iOS.

Developers and users who may have been impacted by the removal of Home Screen web apps in the beta release of iOS in the EU can expect the return of the existing functionality for Home Screen web apps with the availability of iOS 17.4 in early March.”

zagrebian··on Show HN: Improve cognitive focus in 1 minute
Maybe it would be better if the circle didn’t have such a high contrast. I don’t want a black circle burnt into my eyes after I’m done with this exercise.
zagrebian··on Websites shouldn't reject passwords generated by browsers
Firefox currently has 178 million monthly active users. That’s a significant amount of revenue that a website can lose if the developer ignores Firefox.
zagrebian··on Tell HN: Google-Wide Layoffs
Is Chrome team affected?
zagrebian··on Thorium – The first browser to score over 600 speedometer points on a Mac M3 Pro
I thought Chrome team were the leading experts on web performance. How is Thorium able to outperform them?
zagrebian··on A new world of open extensions on Firefox for Android has arrived
Absolutely cannot wait for true Firefox on iPhone.
zagrebian··on Apple now requires a judge's consent to hand over push notification data
How about requiring end-to-end encryption? Would that not be a better solution?
zagrebian··on Infants understand language via rhythm and tone rather than individual sounds
They should do a study to test if letting babies watch a show like Last Airbender instead of Teletubbies has a positive effect.
zagrebian··on Demystifying Web Push Notifications
Hm, it looks like all Chromium-based browsers, including Edge, Brave, and Samsung Internet, use Google’s endpoint for web push subscriptions. Is that true? If yes, is that a potential privacy issue?
zagrebian··on X Corp. vs. Media Matters for America et al.
What would you recommend in this case? MacBook Pro. Most of the time, it’s plugged in because I use it at my desk, so why would I use the battery unnecessarily when the power outlet is right there, and the laptop is stationary. But that means that the battery is “fully charged” most of the time. Is that bad? Would it be better if it didn’t go above 80% most of the time?
zagrebian··on I think I need to go lie down
I checked in a screen reader. Nothing is announced when pressing the buttons. This is a problem. It should say something like “Checkbox B moved to the left”. Without any sort of announcement, the user has no idea if pressing the button did anything.

zagrebian··on New evidence strongly suggests Indonesia's Gunung Padang is oldest known pyramid
> And, they found that the older parts of the structure were made sometime between 25,000 and 14,000 years ago, making it the oldest known pyramid in the world today.

I mean, it makes it the oldest known structure, not just pyramid.

zagrebian··on ‘Modern cars are a privacy nightmare,’ the worst Mozilla’s seen
Mozilla currently has around 750 employees that work on Firefox.
zagrebian··on When a website erases your text you can use this trick to recover it
Browsers should provide text input recovery, at least short term. Even a 15-minute storage would be enough for the most common use-cases.

For example, if I attempt to submit a form, but the website errors out, I should be able to reload the page, right-click the input, and click something like “Recover input” in the context menu.
