z3phyr··on CISA boss: Makers of insecure software are the real cyber villains
Using the same logic, one can argue "SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED AS IS". It should be up-to the user to choose the correct software based on their security policy.

I write software for fun and skillz, making computers do extraordinary things. If I start following regulation, then there is no fun for me and no software that does extraordinary things.

No ma'am Doom or Second Reality would not have been possible with this attitude.

z3phyr··on SpaceX Astronauts Begin Spacewalk, Putting New Spacesuits to Test
Quantum Computing, Protein folding, Fusion etc are usually PR topics. If the intention is to advance these, then small amount of funding is useless. We need dedicated Manhattan project style endeavors, a population dedicated to the cause.

Advances in science requires enormous resources. Take space travel. These companies will never try to innovate in deep space travel, because it brings nothing to them. Low Earth Orbit is where the profit is (but less science)

They could fund current NASA, but they won't fund what NASA should be.

z3phyr··on We spent $20 to achieve RCE and accidentally became the admins of .mobi
Our industry does not argue about code style. There were a few distinct subcultures which were appropriated by the industry who used to argue about code style, lisp-1 vs lisp-2, vim vs emacs, amiga vs apple, single pass vs multi pass compilers, Masters of Deception vs Legion of Doom and the list goes on, depending on the subculture.

The industry is profit driven.

z3phyr··on A List of companies that use Array Languages (J, K, APL, q)
I think array languages can be a very good fit for graphics programming. I wonder if anyone tried that?
z3phyr··on Initial details about why CrowdStrike's CSAgent.sys crashed
Does the switchboard in a nuclear missile launch facility run Crowdstrike? I picture it as a high quality analog circuit board that does 1 thing and 1 thing only. No way to run anything else.

Globally networked personal computers were kind of cultural revolution against the setting you describe. Everyone had their own private compute and compute time and everyone could share their own opinion. Computers became our personal extensions. This is what IBM, Atari, Commodore, Be, Microsoft and Apple (and later desktop Linux) sold. Now given this ideology, can a company own my limbs? If not, they can't own my computers.

z3phyr··on Cities need more trees
When I lived in Delhi, my home was near the ridge area of North Campus. Its a lush forest with shrubs, ferns, and subtropical hard trees with a few lakes. The temperature difference, the coolness in air and the vibe difference from the rest of the city was like night and day.
z3phyr··on Imhex: A hex editor for reverse engineers
I really like this area of computer culture. RE, writing kernel modules, figuring out how stuff works and making stuff do what it was not designed to do aspects. However, legal avenues to do so are far in between and it requires a huge amount of time and help from peers.
z3phyr··on ARC Prize – a $1M+ competition towards open AGI progress
I can see many problems can be solved with modern symbolic approaches like theorem provers, dependent types, pattern matching etc. But I will have to dive in to actually confirm it.
z3phyr··on Xv6, a simple Unix-like teaching operating system
Or maybe something like a lisp machine or a smalltalk os?
z3phyr··on 60 kHz (2022)
There is only one government
z3phyr··on ICQ will stop working from June 26
ICQ was my first interaction with computers proper as a kid. My father had just started as a programmer; and the family just got a computer with a Windows 95. Father sets up ICQ so that we can chat and send new year greetings, when he is away fro business. Good times.
z3phyr··on Drone Flying 101 – An interactive tutorial for beginners
Can anyone recommend some good drones outside of DJI?
z3phyr··on First proof that "plunging regions" exist around black holes in space
Please touch grass sir!
z3phyr··on Cyber Security: A pre-war reality check
There is not much difference in the capability of human experience. I bet a baby born in 494AD, teleported to the modern period and raised by modern humans will be indistinguishable in capability to every other human being.
z3phyr··on Seven Dyson Sphere Candidates
I mean, Its dangerous to exist in the same space as a potentially advanced aliens. Might as well observe them.
z3phyr··on Seven Dyson Sphere Candidates
Sure, create worm holes, travel dimensions and all that
z3phyr··on Seven Dyson Sphere Candidates
> We are on earth

No, if we have a dyson sphere, we are everywhere playa

z3phyr··on Cyber Security: A pre-war reality check
And yet autocracies are historically the most "successful" types of governments. Humans always and eventually end up selecting autocracies with thunderous applause.
z3phyr··on TOTP Authenticator for PalmOS
This feels like a normal valley office setting. With l33t stuff, I imagine rave parties like in the matrix, and hackers banging away at their keyboards doing funky things.
z3phyr··on Microsoft CTO: Thoughts on OpenAI (2019)
John Carmack, ryg, people making demoscene, are the hackerest of the hackers, and they use Windows mostly. These people derive from the Wirthian pascal heritage. Unix people would not know.
z3phyr··on Microsoft overhaul treats security as 'top priority' after a series of failures
If security is the top priority then performance, ease of use, system malleability can no longer be the top priority.
z3phyr··on Making a 3D modeler in C in a week
It would be like a regular raytracer, but instead of writing pixels to a file, you write them to your buffer/texture.
z3phyr··on Building a rocket engine from scratch
Th soviet mechanical and rf engineering efforts were very well regarded during the early cold war period, and I would argue, much more sophisticated. Language did not stop the USSR. It was the economic policy like banning some disciplines based on ideological grounds like cybernetics etc.

Check it out, the things for which a western scientist or engineer is given credit, were discovered/invented much earlier by soviet counterparts! What do you think about Kotelnikov?

z3phyr··on Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years
Rust is good for software following a strict spec and design doc. A lot of what I do is exploratory in nature. Rust sucks there, fighting me. Best kind of languages in those cases are Lisp, Python and (unironically) C with Visual Studio debugger.
z3phyr··on Calculus Made Easy
You will be correct for the most part. However, there is a question of motivation as well. Kids can make very cool toys with a lathe.

I am not from the west, but I watched Band of Brothers. From most of the ww2 media there is always a term being used. "Why we fight?"

z3phyr··on I love programming but I hate the programming industry
Nope. Academia has a very sad bottom line as well.

What OP needs is enough financial stability and political will that they can do whatever they want. This can be slowly achieved by grinding at a corporation, taking political control and grinding or by violence / threat of violence.

z3phyr··on Calculus Made Easy
The core skill of the teacher lies in recognizing the interests of the pupil and then working on refining those skills so that the pupil can use those skills for at least their betterment, if not the society.

And that is one of the toughest things to get right. Children are extremely curious, that's how they learn and master absolutely anything including arts, dancing, music, history, skating, catching insects, street smarts etc. It's on us as teachers to not let that curiosity wither into nothingness.

z3phyr··on Calculus Made Easy
> Ask why do I need to determine similarity of two vectors

Simple:

Start with

a) Suppose you are making a video game..

b) Suppose you are determining ballistic trajectory of your missile system based on model rockets

c) Suppose you are running a fighter robot group..

Or any of the stuff children are supposed to *actually* do and then take these classes with determination to do the actual creative things that they wanna do all life.

There is an aspect of jest in the above comment, but it also contains some likely truth. Children love doing stuff, and these are the things that may enable them.

z3phyr··on Spectral Ray Tracing
Gameplay is directly influenced by the "feel" of the world. I am not strictly talking about photo-realism, but (1) how the world reacts to input (2) how is it consistent.

Physics is not about real world accuracy, but about how consistently stuff interacts (and its side effects like illumination) in the virtual world. There will be a time in the future when the physics engine will become the rendering engine, just because there are infinite gameplay possibilities in such a craft.
