yuppie_scum··on Hyperloop One to shut down
If we could just get rid of that pesky Connecticut in the way
yuppie_scum··on Create and manage AWS IAM users and roles with Terraform
It’s asking for trouble to create IAM Users. SSO and role assumption will save you a lot of headaches.
yuppie_scum··on US Steel, once the largest corporation, agrees to sell to Nippon Steel
WW3 will be over before we will be able to get Japan on the phone to ask.
yuppie_scum··on My Ordinary Life: Improvements Since the 1990s (2019)
Friends and Seinfeld are still two of the most popular syndicated programs in America, and generally you can find at least one episode of either or both on at any given time of day on modern basic cable in 2023 USA.

Certain groups absolutely have valid reasons not to return to 90’s cultural norms but a pretty large majority would have no objection, at least initially.

yuppie_scum··on Ask HN: Best UI/UX Experience for Articles on the Web
Why reinvent the wheel? Just put it in substack or whatever and focus on delivering content (your differentiator hopefully)
yuppie_scum··on GTA 6: Grand Theft Auto VI could smash revenue records
Or maybe it will land with a thud like Starfield.

yuppie_scum··on GM says it's dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto because they're unsafe
You know you need to look out the front windshield still even when you have a GPS right?
yuppie_scum··on Andre Braugher: Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Captain Raymond Holt Dies Aged 61
Great ensemble cast of characters with neuroses, a bit of world building with great recurring characters, witty writing. There’s a lot of heart in the writing and acting too, it’s easy to care for these characters even though they are zany goofballs.

I would claim it is truly the last great network TV sitcom unless there’s something newer I’m missing.

Oh yeah and Terry Crews is just amazing.

yuppie_scum··on What We Watched: A Netflix engagement report
No, it’s the children who are wrong.
yuppie_scum··on Ask HN: Should I subscribe to ChatGPT Plus if we can get it for free on Bing?
Get the API and a client like MacGPT.
yuppie_scum··on Tesla failed at battery swapping. Stellantis says it may have the secret
It just doesn’t make sense when modern charging technology lets you add 200 miles in 15-20 minutes.
yuppie_scum··on Apple to move key iPad engineering resources to Vietnam
Quality just isn’t there with offshoring due to the time zone difference and distance. Accountability isn’t there. The development savings will be offset by onshore QA, PM, Project management and rework by onshore devs. Been seeing that play out again and again for 20 years.

I have seen slightly better results with offshoring from Latin America - fast feedback makes a huge difference - being able to meet frequently and provide feedback in the same time zone makes a huge huge difference.

I think that AI will rapidly slot into this niche of “indirect programming” however. As soon as token sizes allow large codebases to be be parsed and modified, it’s all over.

yuppie_scum··on Typical CS dude checking his Georgia Tech admission 3 hours early
Supreme in the bookmark bar? Cringe
yuppie_scum··on Ask HN: Help me name my startup
Earthbound is the name of a cult classic video game from the 16 bit era. I imagine you’ll face some headwinds with SEO if you choose that. Perhaps even trademark trouble.
yuppie_scum··on Ask HN: How do you bootstrap your social presence?
Don’t bother. It’s pointless.
yuppie_scum··on Better way to transfer files between Windows <> Mac?
Make a windows file share and open it on the Mac. Super easy
yuppie_scum··on Ask HN: Discarding the climate argument, what's in it for a person buying an EV?
Next to zero maintenance - the only consumables are tires and brakes. Brakes last 100k miles or more since the regenerative braking reduces wear. No detouring all the time for gas stops either. I’ve owned one for almost 4 years and went to the dealer once for a recall, otherwise I just get in and go when I want.

And they’re quick as fuck.

yuppie_scum··on Investors snagged 1 in 5 homes for sale in Boston area, worsening housing crisis
You’re really reaching here Jeff.
yuppie_scum··on Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 1 [video]

yuppie_scum··on Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 1 [video]

yuppie_scum··on No More Dry Burgers: McDonald's Overhauls Its Biggest Item
The only thing I’d change would be to get rid of the pickle.

If you travel a lot, the Chase Sapphire Reserve is worth the membership fee, since you get back credits for travel and precheck. The lounge access is also a surprisingly good benefit.
yuppie_scum··on Ask HN: What is the best stack to find a job currently?
COBOL

Firstly - link is from 2022

Secondly, on Black Friday there were many 32 inch 4K monitors available for under $700. Might still be some.

yuppie_scum··on Ask HN: Kubernetes Deployers
Use a managed platform like minikube for your laptop, or terraform to provision EKS if you’re in in AWS, or the equivalents in the other clouds.

There’s no point to building your own control plane from scratch anymore for 95% of cases.

yuppie_scum··on Ask HN: Imminent demotion, what to do?
Will your compensation be the same? If so, enjoy the lesser responsibilities and leave the lead role vague on your resume.
yuppie_scum··on Car dealers openly beg Biden to put brakes on electric vehicle drive
Biden should tell them to wait while he goes off to a room in the back and chit chats with the finance manager for an hour or two to see if he give them a better deal.
