yreg··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
I'm not arguing for anything. I'm just adding context, because your comment read as if it happened during the 'current phase' of the conflict. That's a crucial detail to omit, imho.
yreg··on Firebase SDK is crashing all iOS apps since this morning
This is not the first time this has happened.

Worth noting that Corrie was killed 23 years ago during a different phase of the conflict and under a previous government. (In which Netanyahu served as minister of finance.)

This is such a nice article!
yreg··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
They have started trying it when the problem was much more difficult than it is now. I think a fridge that does this itinerary well is not too far away.

Because you are at the supermarket trying to remember what you have at home.
yreg··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
How is that absurd?

Of course with piracy you can have all the content available everywhere forever.

How do you expect a law-abiding company to match that with content they don't own? Unless we abolish copyright.

I miss these kinds of shows. BSG, StarGate, Star Treks, FireFly. I'm sad that they went out of fashion and the genre has moved on to other concepts.

Only Expanse and The Orville compares in the past decade I guess.

Does API price cut translate into higher allowance on the subscription? Do we know?

> There's a crypto token involved in paying for it.

It seems that the viewers pay with USDC, no? There's nothing inherently sketchy about that.

yreg··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
In plenty of big companies one month is not even enough time to get a new release into production, let alone test and fix the layouts.

> some of the bigger apps to switch to the Liquid Glass

Interestingly, Instagram decided to implement a custom liquid-glass like tab bar which surely now turns to be a PITA.

yreg··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
Yeah, good luck with that.

Finally! So we have a little over a month between getting the simulator and first customers running our apps in Duo.

I expect that most apps will look rather broken on release, but it will be smoothed out eventually.

Doesn't Tokyo have very low unemployment? According to Wikipedia: Japan 2.5%, Singapore 3.2%, USA 4.1%, EU 5.2%.

I expect Tokyo is probably even lower than the national average. Visiting just as a tourist it seems like Japan is quite good at creating, I don't want to say bullshit jobs, but perhaps not-that-necessary jobs? Jobs which mainly serve to give something to do to (usually) elderly. My understanding was that the idea is to make them feel to be a contributing part of the society(?)

I mean all the people controlling the pedestrians or acting like "human signs" and such.

Am I getting it wrong?

No, you don't need maglev to compete with a ship sailing from NZ on speed.

> Now the idea is that the insurance company discontinues the App and the (untrusted) customer must have an iPhone 18 Pro to make an insurance claim?

In a couple of years it will be almost any iPhone instead of 18 Pro. And if it catches on, other phone vendors will provide a similar service.

yreg··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
I tend to fly cheaply with multiple transfers/layovers. What I figured out recently is that it is nice to combine the flights in such a way that one of the layovers is _longer_.

When the airport has a good connection to a major city then 12 hours during the day are enough, but I'm happy to bump it to 2-3 days.

I have managed to visit some Chinese and Canadian cities this way and it was both more interesting and much cheaper than taking a direct flight.

There was a discussion on it here yesterday: https://old.reddit.com/r/slatestarcodex/comments/1wfdnus/why...
yreg··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
It works, but there is usually a noticeable difference (at least with Quest).
yreg··on Apple's Dimensional Drawings
I remember around iPhone 6 or such popular design rumours that were circulating around turned out to be wrong. There were photos of chinese warehouses filled with cases made for the incorrect design.

With iPhone 4 Gizmodo literally acquired the prototype and still large portion of the crowd did not believe them, because the design seemed radically different to what they expected.

Nowadays with the size of the supply line there seem to remain no more hardware secrets before the keynotes.

yreg··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update

These things were obviously always concerning but I feel the situation has taken on an entirely different dimension now that they could feasibly use whisper + LLM to actually review _all_ the communication. That's crazy.
yreg··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
Darkness travels even faster than light on Discworld, because it has to be fast enough to get out of the way when light arrives.

It is a bit less strict than you think. It's not just about the police giving the tourists some leeway.

- Alcohol is fully legal for non-muslims, even if they have residency (or in rare cases citizenship).

- Unmarried cohabitation is fully legal, unmarried sex is mostly legal. It can only be prosecuted when a partner is cheating and their wife/husband files a complaint. Or when a minor is involved and their legal guardian files a complaint.

On the other hand homosexual and transgender expressions are still illegal, like you say.
