ykat7··on Request for comments regarding topics to be discussed at Dark Patterns workshop
If you're in the UK, EU, New Zealand, Australia, or Singapore, I found out yesterday that Wise (TransferWise) customers get 3 virtual cards free of charge [1][2].

I'd be interested to hear about any other UK/EU firms offering similar.

ykat7··on What is Chia cryptocurrency and why is it bad news for hard drives?
Could you or the parent commenter define "submarine" in this context? I searched and didn't find anything relevant.
ykat7··on TransferWise offers unlimited virtual cards now
> All consumer and business customers in the UK, EEA, New Zealand, Australia and Singapore are eligible.

This is a very interesting move for the UK market. Dominant challenger bank Monzo has positioned virtual cards as a key feature of its paid accounts [1] with a cap of 5 cards per customer.

Edit: Per the post, looks like there's a cap of 3 virtual cards per Wise account.

Seen today in a "Trending Moment" [1] pushed by Twitter on the Explore tab. The posts shared the same hashtag but didn't otherwise seem to be curated.

This search query brings up a handful of examples [2]:

ykat7··on Ask HN: How to get rid of Adobe Acrobate subscription without cancellation fees?
I got stung by this a while back and got Adobe to waive the cancellation fee and close my account over live chat.

You can bring up the chat widget from the chat bubble icon on https://helpx.adobe.com/contact/what-contact-options.html. You may need to whitelist the page in your adblocker for the widget to load.

ykat7··on Ask HN: What happened to xip.io and what would be suitable alternatives?
No announcement that I'm aware of, but I've used https://nip.io in a pinch before and haven't encountered any issues. Like xip.io, it supports IPv4 only and uses PowerDNS.
ykat7··on What3Words: App used by emergency services under scrutiny
I couldn't find a site like that but did come across Terence Eden's post from 2019, "Why Bother With What Three Words?", that covers some of those problems [1][2].

ykat7··on Show HN: Appleshouter – iOS Push Notifications for PWAs and Web apps
App Store Guidelines [1] wouldn't apply here since this is for web apps opened in Safari. If anything, it'd be language in the Developer License Agreement that might cover this.

ykat7··on Bombadillo: a non-web browser
For iOS, I know of two. Both are on TestFlight:

* Gemini for iOS (https://github.com/pitr/gemini-ios)

* Rocketeer (https://lists.orbitalfox.eu/archives/gemini/2020/002812.html)

For Android, Ariane is available on the Play Store and for direct download:

* Ariane (https://oppenlab.net/pr/ariane/)

I had a brief look at the iOS ones but haven't checked how well they do in the protocol test suite: gemini://gemini.conman.org/test/torture/

ykat7··on Bombadillo: a non-web browser
Yep: https://rawtext.club/~sloum/bombadillo.html

> The name Bombadillo comes fromt he legendarium of [J.R.R. Tolkien], specifically The Lord of the Rings. [Tom Bombadil], who was a jolly fellow, is a mysterious figure. A seemingly simple character that speaks in rhymed meter and lives in the woods, Tom is master of his domain and is in his way quite powerful.

ykat7··on Bombadillo: a non-web browser
> Bombadillo is a non-web browser, designed for a growing list of protocols operating outside of the web.
ykat7··on BitBar Needs a Developer
I learned about BitBar today, only to find that development had slowed down. It still worked on Big Sur but I encountered this text alignment bug [0].

I'm interested in trying its spiritual successor SwiftBar [1] and any other alternatives folks know of.

ykat7··on 1Password 7.7 for Mac can be unlocked with Apple Watch
TIL. It looks like 1Password stores the key in the Secure Enclave and uses the "watch" constraint [0] to access it. This triggers the "Approve with Apple Watch" prompt [1].

Interesting! On the topic of security, do you plan to add a SECURITY.md [0] in case people wish to report potential vulnerabilities?

ykat7··on 1Password 7.7 for Mac can be unlocked with Apple Watch
> One of our most highly requested features, Apple Watch can now unlock 1Password on any Mac with a Secure Enclave.

I'm curious how 1Password achieved this as (afaik) Apple hasn't exposed an "Unlock with Apple Watch" API to third parties.

ykat7··on Vim Snake – Practice (and show off) your vim skills playing snake
This is a neat way to develop muscle memory for the home row.

As a complement to `vimtutor`, I'd love to know about more games that get people familiar with vim.

Right now I only know of https://vim-adventures.com which costs $25 for 6 months' use.

I'd be interested in the Zettelkasten and second brain examples under "How can Karma help me?"

ykat7··on Ask HN: Consequences of adding all items on Amazon in the cart?
I imagine Amazon's bot detection would flag the high volume of requests made with this pattern:

a) fetch products from a particular category

b) add products to cart

c) proceed to checkout

Amazon doesn't mention how they'd enforce against scraping but my guess is IP- and account-level restrictions.

ykat7··on curl https://v2.wttr.in/London
Looks like wttr.in forks wego which uses these sources [0]:

  * worldweatheronline.com
  * darksky.net
  * openweathermap.com
I couldn't find anything more concrete.
