yhager··on YouTube Go: YouTube reimagined for the next generation of YouTube viewers
I'm curious, how do you make your phone GApps free? I want to uninstall them but don't want to brick it..
yhager··on Canadian surgeons urge people to throw out bristle BBQ brushes
Same method was used (and probably still is) in Israel when I was growing up. I guess I'm going back to onions now :)
yhager··on Kinesis Advantage 2
Ah! Thank you! I've had this issue from time to time. I thought it is probably a software thing, not the keyboard.

Thanks to the link you've sent I now have a simple solution - tap both shift keys at once.. Great!

yhager··on A Password Manager That Doesn't Store Passwords
I've been using supergenpass for years and love it. Why did you move to KeePass2?

yhager··on Gmail Will Warn If Message Is Not Authenticated/Encrypted
I too have my own email server for some years now (7 maybe?). Only had problems when I mis-configured it.

I'm frightened as well that google is taking over email. As long as people rely on web based email, there's no hope for actually encrypting email. TLS is nice, but really, it doesn't mean much. Your email is stored plain text on Google's servers anyways.

You must be confusing me with someone else

yhager··on Tabs or Spaces? The Top Starred Repositories in GitHub Analysed
It's not a power of two!

But really, I recently worked on a project where we used 3 spaces, and it's works quite well. Not too little, not too much.

I can't remember why I've never considered it before..

yhager··on Netflix socks detect when you've dozed off and pause your TV show
once again, a "Black Mirror" episode got it right. In "15 Million Merits", they pause the ad when you close your eyes or look away and will keep saying in a stern voice to look back at the screen.

yhager··on Sct – set color temperature
That's exactly how it is. It does not want to figure out the location itself, so it consults other software, which is optional.
yhager··on Words matter in ‘ISIS’ war, so use ‘Daesh’
This is a great read, thanks for the link.

Only problem for me is that it clearly states they have no interest in performing terror attacks in the west (although they would condone it). I'm not sure how it lines up with what just happened in Paris.

yhager··on GitHub Desktop is now available
> I am a full-time Linux user and have been for several years. I run Debian on my laptop and Arch Linux on my home machine. Both use i3 (no DE), and I do all my work at the command line or in applications that I launch from the command line[0]. I love the Linux terminal. I don't even own a non-Linux machine, not counting the various OS X devices I've used at work when one is required.

Wow, that's exactly my case as well :). I could've written this, almost word for word (except I run debian on my servers, and archlinux on my laptop/home machines).

yhager··on Ask HN: Books with a high signal to noise ratio?
This is a good one, but it's full of tedious details, and long boring sections with names you've never heard of. It's a fun book altogether, and there's high signal in there, but also high level of noise.
yhager··on Ask HN: Books with a high signal to noise ratio?
Interesting. I'll check it out.

yhager··on Ask HN: Books with a high signal to noise ratio?
Seconded. This book has a very high signal-to-noise ratio.

There are tons of all kinds of floaties in every pool I've seen in BC, Canada. The life guards seems pretty strict there, but maybe not for banning floaties.

I have no lifeguarding experience nor education, but what you are saying seems important. Any known research or training practices for lifeguards that would support your claim? I could start a dialogue with our local pool with something like that.

Thanks

yhager··on Tunneling Internet traffic over FB chat
Yeah, I've played with that a bit..it was fun. It worked in airports, as DNS was available, even though you had to pay for actual surfing. Not surprisingly, it was quite slow.
yhager··on Ask HN: What is your experience with working remotely?
If the whole team is remote that wouldn't be a problem. If all of them are in the office, and you are the odd man out, then you should worry about that.

I believe that working successfully remotely doesn't work for every company or team. They must be actively encouraging it, and they should be aware of engagement issues that arise from working remotely.

yhager··on Getting Organized with Org Mode
In that case, how about throwing here just a quick list of features/tools you're using for this?
yhager··on The Scraping Problem and Ethics
Probably not, but if they don't want to be scraped, the first place they should notify about this is robots.txt. I was just stating an example that you can allow some bots and not others if you like.

Of course, forging your user agent, disobeying robots.txt or scraping after you were told not to, is wrong ethically.

yhager··on The Scraping Problem and Ethics
Not completely by the specification, but I think this one works as expected.

yhager··on For $45 Per Month, All the Coffee You Can Drink
You can get a pretty good quality espresso with a fairly cheap setup.

To me, the most important thing is the freshness of the roast, then the quality of the grinder, and and actual espresso machine comes third.

I have a $800 setup (machine + grinder), and I roast my own beans, on an iron skillet, once a week.

It's pretty difficult to find anything outside on par with the quality I can get at home (most of the time..)

yhager··on Recruitment Process for a Google Site Reliability Engineer
Exactly my thoughts. I guess they do it because they can, and the candidates are willing to go through this.
yhager··on Get Facebook WiFi for your business
Setting up a facebook account with your name, then logging in to various wifi spots around the country is exactly what concerns our OP.
yhager··on Learn random facts while pulling code changes
I don't know how to run a shell alias using a git alias, so I ended up creating a file ~/bin/fact, and defining the git alias as:

This was covered in a few blogs before, Here's an example from fooducate: http://www.fooducate.com/blog/2009/05/31/on-orange-juice/

There is also a response from the Florida dept. of Citrus there.
