ygouzerh··on Threads, an Instagram app
I will do the counter-argument: this app is from Instagram, so it might have an higher success rate. To have worked in big corporate, new products are often entirely managed by a division, and only a reporting is done to the central entity.
ygouzerh··on Show HN: Script – A text editor for digitally interconnected documents
I like the cartoon style of the logos, did you hired a designer for it or did you used a generative tool like Midjourney ?
ygouzerh··on Launch HN: OpenMeter (YC W23) – Real-Time, Open Source Usage Metering
Notes: Something that I always says in my engineering team: I will encourage you to fully leverage SemVer for the versioning of the product and use the major for the major public releases / breaking changes.

In this way, it will enable you to be able to fully use the minor number and the patch number when you will need them.

Your UI is very nice, are you using a special CSS framework ?
ygouzerh··on YouTube: Sort by oldest is back baby
Definitely... I built a mobile app for android to block me to go to Shorts and waste hours of doom-scrolling... I will release it on the Play Store if someone need it as well.
ygouzerh··on Gitlab has introduced a five-user limit for free groups
Why downgrading the pricing when Github have a much better pricing and just rollout some crazy new GPT-powered features?

We had in our backlog to explore a PoC to try out Github, since the announcement of Copilot X.

Now, with this pricing announcement, this PoC will be transformed into a full migration from Gitlab to Github.

ygouzerh··on Render Raises $50M Series B
It seems quite interesting.

I would have definitely proposed it to my company, but unfortunately the per-seat pricing is a no-go for us. We are having flexible teams, and we often change people per project or hire from contractors so the user management can quickly become a mess on per-seat projects.

We will end-up creating some shared accounts to save on costs, and it will become messy to manage, some people will be denied access,... so unfortunately we will need to pass.

ygouzerh··on Cloud Appreciation Society
I really thought this post was about AWS, Azure or GCP, you got me! I will use it in my workplace now
ygouzerh··on APIs for content sites must be free
Putting a price on an API that is just there to parse website content is not a great idea to beginning with. It's open-door for scraping companies and uncontrolled traffic. At least it's possible to put a rate-limit on an API.
ygouzerh··on Llama.cpp: Full CUDA GPU Acceleration
High technology hardware needs a lot of investment, and it's hard to gather enough resources (human, capital, market share).

But AMD is coming strong, and they are trying to compete with Nvidia now. https://www.forbes.com/sites/iainmartin/2023/05/31/lisa-su-s...

ygouzerh··on MIDI 2.0 driver support coming with Linux 6.5
Thank you for the TLDR !
ygouzerh··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
I think companies don't understand that APIs are not only a way to make money, but a way as well to control bot and scrapper. If Reddit APIs are too pricey, some people will run crazy expensive GET on entire pages to retrieve the content dynamically, and this will cost them more money than by letting clients use well designed APIs.
ygouzerh··on How to Stare at Your Phone Without Losing Your Soul
That's so true. I love Youtube for its music, documentaries and software engineering content.

But I hate the Shorts features, if I click on only one video, it sucks all my night.

I built a small app for blocking the Shorts features, in this way I can enjoy the advantages without having the bad sides.

ygouzerh··on You can serve static data over HTTP
For mocks, it's a good idea.

For the rest, even for a prototype, it seems a lot of trouble to insert, update and delete data.

ygouzerh··on Let us serve you, but don't bring us down
It will definitely help yes, I don't know as well why they are not using it. And probably work on auto-scaling as well, in case the API Requests are legit.

10,000 requests/seconds is nowadays an average number for load testing in the companies I work with, for websites / mobile apps deployed at this scale

ygouzerh··on Ask HN: How do you not take criticism of your work personally?
I took project management lessons, it made me realized that a lot of things that goes wrong is systemic (knowledge transfer not done correctly, review processes not implemented correctly, timelines not well managed that leads almost mechanically to more bugs,... etc).
ygouzerh··on Ask HN: Those with success using GPT-4 for programming – what are you doing?
I use it to get more programming done, and take care of all the things that comes in the way:

A big client asked us to fill around 200 questions in an excel sheets, regarding our company security.

Then he asked for a cybersecurity standard document (like a big thing around 50 pages)

I took the previous excel sheet, removed noise, anonimized it. The n pass it to gpt3.5 to summarize for each security category (access management, code source security,...) the bulletpoints answering how do we implement that

To finish, I passed the bulletpoints for each category to gpt4, to write a nice bullshit document which sound more professional than me

ygouzerh··on Regent – Electric coastal travel
Will you target Philippines market ? With more than 7000 islands, they could definitely benefit from it.
ygouzerh··on Conway’s Law (2022)
How does this law works in Remote companies, where everyone is working remotely ?
ygouzerh··on Mircosoft Loop Has Launched
The speed at which Microsoft is releasing interesting products this year is crazy (Bing AI, Copilot X, Designer, and now Loop)... They must have a nice lean organization. I know many corporate that even if they want and put crazy budgets to it, will not succeeed due to internal process and approvals...
ygouzerh··on Mircosoft Loop Has Launched
It seems yes. It's seems that the key feature, apart from the gpt integration, is that you can share text across apps :

Like you can start to work on a bulletpoint list on Teams during a meeting, and directly have the documentation updated in Word.

ygouzerh··on GPTs Are GPTs: An Early Look at the Labor Market Impact Potential of LLMs
Unfortunately, the great majority of these jobs are already being automated with basic robotics
ygouzerh··on My startup banking story
Definitely! They forgot that there are two type of revenues for a company, and that it can be applied for personal finance as well :

Operational revenues : the real job, the thing that is making money. The yield on the operational one is

Financial revenues : cash sitting around non-invested yet into operations, waiting for the next project to invest in.

The yield on the operational revenues is much higher and the investment in it could be transposed as for example : spending for some certifications, go to online or physical classes, etc

ygouzerh··on Hetzner launches three new dedicated servers
Just an idea like that : deploying a quick k3s/k3d with a PostgreSQL operator like CloudNativePG might help you to take away some of the maintenance overload.
ygouzerh··on The entire prompt of Microsoft Bing Chat?
I like as well to remind people that law is there too. Law is like the ultimate border of information systems. Sometimes it's too hard or cumbersome to implement a security procedure to prevent a behavior, but the law is there anyway. It's kind of reparation versus prevention, but it's there anyways, and it's enough for many use cases.
ygouzerh··on ChatGPT Plus
Is it pirated materials if it's publicly accessible ? It's quite similar to someone reading the web
ygouzerh··on Ask HN: How are you using ChatGPT to make your life better?
I am DevOps Engineer, and I am using to troubleshoot issues. It's an enormous gain of time, being able to copy paste the error, and telling you what's wrong.

For example, we are now troubleshooting an old Openstack, and the online doc is a mess. ChatGPT can give examples, deep explanations and suggestions.

80% of the answers are good, there are still 20% that I need to do (fill it more info, change the questions, etc).

I am actually looking forward to be able to pay it, so I can get answers faster and it can be stable, really helpful when I am in a production incident.

ygouzerh··on Small-Scale Automation
From a productivity point of view, I agree for the fact to limit the number of tool used. But personally, I will advice the reverse, to try different ones, in order to get a larger palette, and learn more. Often in software, tools shape the mindset.

Someone using Python to automate versus someone that is using awk or even someone using some old point-and-click RPA have very different approaches on how to solve an automation problem.

ygouzerh··on Show HN: Deploy Button for GPT-3 API Back Ends
Wow so impress by the speed of delivery of the company, ChatGPT just arrived yesterday and there are already some full products out there !
