yehudalouis··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Why is it fake news, and how do you know that?
yehudalouis··on Why There's No Room for Suburbs in Open-World Games
I read the article - twice. What is the point that the author is trying to make?
yehudalouis··on Epic’s new motion-capture animation tech
I felt it too - but this seems like the kind of solution that will get you 90% of the way there, but still requires an animator to make it feel 'right'. This is insane though.
yehudalouis··on Credit Suisse sheds nearly 25%, key backer says no more money
My guess would be that that SNB's backstop and liquidity assistance is a way to bail them out before the inevitable collapse. It may make the medicine go down easier, as CS's collapse looks likely. Upon their demise, SNB can then say "well, great thing we had that backstop, huh!" rather than needing to find the political capital to get a bailout through.

Just a guess.

yehudalouis··on FBI chief says TikTok 'screams' of US national security concerns
I don't think the FBI cares about TikTok, to be honest. It seems like we're entering a period of posturing against the Chinese, using implicit 'sanctioning' methods: - Banning TikTok - Accusing them of the COVID lab leak theory - Posturing with Taiwan

Seems were just building a substrate for... something. Not to sound too conspiratorial. ;)

yehudalouis··on A manifesto on shower temperature control
Just add a gear affixed to the handle, and then a second gear mated with that, and find the gearing ratio that allows the granular/sensitive inputs you want.
yehudalouis··on Spotify is first music streaming service to surpass 200M paid subscribers
There is. Open the app, play a song. Tap the little Speaker button in the bottom right, near the scrub bar, Airplay & Bluetooth, select your HomePod. :)
yehudalouis··on Spotify is first music streaming service to surpass 200M paid subscribers
Love spotify, but I have always wondered about what seems to be an intentional choice re: their iOS client.

Certain actions related to the speakers/mic outside of the app itself cause music to stop playing, and be unrecoverable unless I reopen the app and tap play.

For example, if I am listening to Spotify, open iMessage, and accidentally hit the dictation icon, I now have to go into Spotify to start playing the music again. If I drag the hidden iOS control pane down, it says no music is paused, so I can't start playing it from there again.

Sounds small, but is super frustrating.

yehudalouis··on [dead]
Seems odd to me. They mention that they'll have humans review your sex. I thought identifying did not require external affirmation? What do you think?
yehudalouis··on The underground cooks of Singapore’s prisons
I'm trying to find the book as an e-book. Anyone have any luck?
yehudalouis··on Natives in Tech asks Apache Software Foundation to change name
I don't really think it has a material impact in how people view my culture. I understand that they've incorporated some of the core tenants and mixed them with their own, but the existence of it doesn't bother me, and I don't think you can really appropriate ideas.

Free for me to use, free for you to use.

yehudalouis··on Natives in Tech asks Apache Software Foundation to change name
I imagine it would mean to take an element of someone's culture, and then adapt it to your own use case that allows you to benefit from it, even if it shines a light on some sort of negative stereotype. Is that a decent definition
yehudalouis··on Natives in Tech asks Apache Software Foundation to change name
No worries. But I think that points out something of a hole in the argument, no? If the generic `you` is what you intended to mean, isn't that a blanket assumption?
yehudalouis··on Natives in Tech asks Apache Software Foundation to change name
I am interested! I mean that genuinely. As a member of a few different cultural groups (Russian, Jewish, United States), I always have enjoyed people adopting pieces of my culture. Especially food.
yehudalouis··on Natives in Tech asks Apache Software Foundation to change name
As a member of a people who were attempted to be genocided (I am Jewish), I like when people adopt pieces of my culture.

Please, by all means, spread matzoh ball soup as far and as wide as you can. It's delicious. Use the name `maccabee` as the name of your new software that is resilient and strong.

yehudalouis··on Natives in Tech asks Apache Software Foundation to change name
> You still think the people who produced this culture are not on par with you.

I do think they are on par with me.

yehudalouis··on Natives in Tech asks Apache Software Foundation to change name
I'm still not sure I understand the cultural appropriation argument as a whole, including this one.
yehudalouis··on Blood test can detect 'toxic' protein years before Alzheimer's symptoms emerge
Same. Eating a massive caloric surplus at the moment while lifting 6 days per week (3600-4200 calories/day) -- eating about 60% animal protein, vegetables, and dairy. Rice/pasta on occasion.

Don't really try and stop myself if I want to splurge on the weekends: ice cream, maybe some pizza, etc.

Bloodwork is fantastic currently.

yehudalouis··on 'Tradwives' promote a lifestyle that evokes the 1950s
That's a fair point. Perhaps the actual salient piece of what I wrote is that a very large percentage of my girl friends are doing an about-face and looking to get married, have kids, and be a homemaker. A much much larger percentage than the folks I know just a few years older (26-29)
yehudalouis··on 'Tradwives' promote a lifestyle that evokes the 1950s
I'm 25. I have noticed a larger and larger number of my peers veer towards seeking out traditional values. I don't mean Mad Men style philandering and domestic abuse. Instead a growing cohort of my friends are leaving large metropolises and are heading out to much smaller cities and looking to buy homes.

Past that, more and more of them are looking to marry sooner rather than later, which I believe bucks the current trend.

I know that the story isn't new: college grades move to large cities for jobs and exciting opportunities, but these friends are young! Plus, we are witnessing our siblings who are about to leave college balk at the idea of paying rent in large cities (NYC, SF, Chicago, Austin, et al) and are looking more fondly at smaller, more affordable cities.

Relative to the article, I know tons of girls who are cooling to the idea of 'girlbossing,'[0] and are instead become more interested in raising a family/being a homemaker.

Anecdotal this, of course.

[0] I don't mean this in a derogatory sense. Just had lots of girl friends in college who were determined to enter the corporate workforce and become leadership/executives/etc and used the term. Most of them are now starting families (at 25!)

yehudalouis··on The FBI was the primary link between the intelligence community and Twitter
I prefer the old, anti-establishment left. Now the left is just comprised of journalists defending three letter agencies while calling the right "bootlickers."

I don't like the idea of any three letter agency having any communication with a company like Twitter unless it is for a specific investigation.

yehudalouis··on Inventor of the world wide web wants us to reclaim our data from tech giants
So my data is stored in my Pod, and I can grant different platforms and services access to my data? So for example if I have a photo that I want to share on some sort of social platform, the resource is being pulled directly from my pod?
yehudalouis··on What to Do When a Direct Report Is Bullying You
I try to give these articles/guidance a lot of leeway, but for godssakes: (1) tell them to stop, (2) escalate if necessary, (3) consider termination if it is disrupting your work environment.
yehudalouis··on Ask HN: What Is Going on with Neo4j?
Neo4j was a terrible experience as a developer. It crashed constantly, local dev required me to finagle around with Java SDK versions and packages. I'm not gonna mess about with that. Their managed offering was equally as shitty, and their own Go SDK was so poor that I ended up scrapping it all together.

We landed on running RedisGraph atop Redis, and got it up and running in 45 minutes. Zero downtime. Zero complaints. Awesome.

yehudalouis··on New York City hiring top rat killer
Any good ideas on how you'd implement a rat extermination strategy?
yehudalouis··on Ten Percent of the Brain Myth
"They say 3% of people use 5-6% of their brains, 97% use just 3% and the rest goes down the drain... I'll never know which one I am, but I'll bet you my last dime, 99% think we're 3%, 100% of the time."

yehudalouis··on Ask HN: I created a news shortening algorithm and am not sure how to utilize it
Man, that's awesome. How does it work for recipes? I know there are a few solutions out there for this, but I absolutely cannot stand the 10 pages of narrative and prose before getting to the actual list of ingredients/steps.

I'd be curious to know if you've tested it against recipes.

yehudalouis··on Ask HN: Looking for Internship in Dhaka
I don't have any leads for you, but I wish you luck. Many here are going to tell you to not mention "that you have good taste." Don't listen to them -- I thought that was a nice touch and it made me smile.
yehudalouis··on Ask HN: What books helped level you up from a developer to something more?
I know its a tired and overused suggestion - but if you can potentially join an early stage company (early stage as in: you are one of the first three or four devs), you'll get the opportunity to see which processes work and which do not, as well as observing (and participating!) in the growth/scaling of an engineering team.

Technical skills are great! However, I've honestly learned some of the more advanced topics on the job. For example, I had sort of a hand-wavey understanding of distributed services/architecture, but I only became intimately familiar with it once I was asked to design one at a very small company.

TL:DR; books are great. Read them. They do not replace the learnings that come from "hey showsover, uh, can you try and figure this out for us?"

yehudalouis··on Ask HN: Do you hike prices often as a freelancer?
Disagree hard here. Better to increase prices less often but with a strong justification.

"Here's why we're raising our prices by 15%" - the alternative yearly increase will be death by a million papercuts: "You are constantly raising the rates!"
