yeahwhatever10··on The male loneliness epidemic and how it affects fathers
Maintaining relationships is the hardest part. When you are young you don't maintain relationships with friends you see them everyday at school and this is true all the way through college.

Once out of college it is the people inside your routine that are your friends, be it a work or a hobby. Upon having a child your routine changes yet again and will change rapidly as the child grows. It is the difficulty of maintaining relationships through the shifting routine of life that is so difficult.

You need one aspect of your routine that has stability through the change. Mine is physical activity.

yeahwhatever10··on Anti-AI Hype LLM Reading List
Hey layoff Markov chains! They may not be SOTA for NLP, but they're still real to me dammit.
yeahwhatever10··on Princeton ‘AI Snake Oil’ authors say GenAI hype has ‘spiraled out of control’
I prefer search engines because I can look through multiple sources. LLMs just give an answer without context or what alternatives might be. They make it difficult to judge to validity of the response.
yeahwhatever10··on First hurricane to hit California in 84 years
With all these once in a 100 year events happening in the past decade it makes you rethink just how chaotic the 1910s-1930s were.
yeahwhatever10··on Which GPU(s) to Get for Deep Learning
It’s the inter GPU communication. Scatter and Gather have much worse performance on AMD GPUs.

I disdain this pessimism that is all over the internet.

Ah so that’s what my manager does all day.
yeahwhatever10··on Case study: Algorithmic trading with Go
I use ib-insync with asyncio and it is surprisingly easy, the most difficult is order management. Jason Brownlee’s SuperFastPython was the most approachable asyncio explanation I found.

yeahwhatever10··on GPT-4 Can Use Tools Now–That’s a Big Deal
I guess I'm an idiot because I thought that was what it was supposed to be doing in the first place. All these examples such as making itineraries were just from stored data? That seems not very useful.

And people don't like golf courses?
yeahwhatever10··on Disney cancels plans to relocate 2,000 jobs to Florida
"Possible". Culture wars are always fascinating in the tradeoffs people are willing to make in their rational. Californians will scream "More Housing! Get rid of Golf Courses and build houses!" But a massive theme park expansion in the middle of a developed area? All good if it hurts someone you hate.
yeahwhatever10··on Disney cancels plans to relocate 2,000 jobs to Florida
Where are they going to go, California? Unless they get huge tax breaks and some open land to expand on I doubt it.
yeahwhatever10··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
I don't understand the "safety" concerns from the example in the second video.
yeahwhatever10··on Say Hi to SoFi. It’s Suing to Force You to Repay Student Loans Faster
I’ll never understand this attitude. “America sucks because you have to repay loans.”

Not for long. All the environmentalists wanting to remove dams on the Columbia will send Seattle’s cost skyrocketing.

Is that how NATO is spoken about in Europe, that it is the might of 30 nations and not just the US?

Tech employees and coders/engineers are not equivalent. It was not 100k engineers that got fired it was a lot of admin staff and sales people.
yeahwhatever10··on A growing number of scientists are convinced the future influences the past
Explaining an idea is not equivalent to taking credit for it.
yeahwhatever10··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
The correlation between effort expended and outcome is misguided. The plow takes more effort than the tractor and produces a worse outcome.
yeahwhatever10··on ChatGPT get-rich-quick schemes are coming for magazines, Amazon, and YouTube
Can you share a few? I am clueless of this culture.

yeahwhatever10··on High-Earning Men Are Cutting Back on Their Working Hours
A lot of people also associate being at work with working even if they are sitting there reading HN.

I noticed this about myself so I started tracking my time. Has really helped my productivity and the mental drain of feeling like I’m always working. Now I recognize how many other activities I actually do.
