yeahsure··on “The Mind in the Wheel” lays out a new foundation for the science of mind
Just another N=1 anecdote: It didn’t work for me when I was dealing with depression a few years ago.

I also lost a dear friend to suicide and he was very succesful and active on his field when it happened. Nobody saw it coming.

It's just not that simple.

yeahsure··on “The Mind in the Wheel” lays out a new foundation for the science of mind
This comment comes across as quite naive. If the solution were truly that simple, we wouldn't see so much people suffering from depression, anxiety, addiction, etc. around the world.
yeahsure··on The Alexa feature "do not send voice recordings" you enabled no longer available
Well, for starters, I guess keeping the "do not send voice recordings" toggle would be a good idea.
yeahsure··on My Struggle with Doom Scrolling
AFAIK - "Doomscrolling can also be defined as the excessive consumption of short-form videos or social media content for an excessive period of time without stopping"

yeahsure··on Facebook Banned Me for Life Because I Help People Use It Less (2021)
I did that for Facebook (unfollowed everyone but my direct family). It worked great for a time. Now my feed is filled to the brim with suggested posts from pages and groups that have nothing to do with me and low-quality fake AI images to push controversial fake news. It's become unusable unfortunately, so I don't use it anymore.
yeahsure··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
Yes, I've been considering both options! WXT seems to fit my use case better at the moment, so I might give it a try.

As for stream names, I’ve looked into it as well, but from the limited research I’ve done, it seems like only paid services are available.

I doubt there's a way to get the radios' programming since these are mostly small radios with very basic websites and online presence. Best I can get is an MP3/AAC stream and that's about it.

yeahsure··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I'm working on a new design for a site I run just for fun.

It's a simple site for streaming local radios from my city, Mendoza (Argentina): https://www.radiosdemendoza.com.ar

It was built with WordPress, and the new theme is using Tailwind and AlpineJS. I hadn’t used AlpineJS before, so this project was a great way to experiment with it.

I don't have any monetization on it, and I'm not sure if I'll pursue that for this site.

Next up, I plan to build a Chrome extension. I have limited experience with that, so it should be a fun challenge.

yeahsure··on SEC has not approved Bitcoin ETFs [fixed]
They would have made more money by tweeting the ETF got rejected. My guess is this was a mistake by an intern or something like that.
yeahsure··on Egyptian banks suspend debit card use in foreign currency
We have a similar situation in Argentina, with the exchange rate being around $350 pesos but the "black market" rate around $1,000.

The only way to get dollars at the official rate is to import goods from abroad, so you can pay the central back in pesos and they settle the invoice with dollars.

Of course, you can only do this if you have connections, otherwise you will be waiting for a long long time (months probably) until your request is approved.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that you can still use a local debit or credit card to make purchases abroad. You will have to pay around $650 pesos for each dollar. The government taxes the heck out of every purchase abroad to discourage people from spending. Still there's a gap, so people use it while they can.

yeahsure··on Loneliness reshapes the brain
I had the same exact experience while travelling through Southeast Asia for several months a few years ago.

I came to the same conclusions you did, and I'm glad you were able to condense it in such a way.

It frustrated me though, to see that their youth were losing their old ways though. Of course it came with some benefits, but I saw them everywhere staring at their phone screens and could only feel nostalgic.

yeahsure··on Ask HN: Found a leak of US citizens personal data. Should I report it?
There are so many possible bad outcomes that can result from these options. Not a good idea at all imho.
yeahsure··on Being OK with not being extraordinary (2021)
This comment reminded me of a video Tim Ferriss posted recently on Youtube which basically said something very similar: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/kgO_Og-__HU

Very insightful!

yeahsure··on TITO: Electric Argentine car
I live in Argentina and this is correct. The (fake) official exchange rate is used by the government and media to paint a better picture of the terrible situation that we're in, it should not be used nor trusted anywhere to make any calculations on the cost of living, inflation, salaries nor anything else.
yeahsure··on Bitcoin Is a Hideous Monstrosity Made Out of Computers and Greed
Not all of us have the privilege of having been born un Sweden. Your comment reeks of privilege and dissociation with the rest of the world, where things work very differently.
yeahsure··on Uber funds new lobbying group to deny rights for gig workers
I might be very wrong, but in my humble opinion Uber drivers are their workers as much as iOS app developers could be considered Apple employees or Youtubers could be considered Google employees. Just because you provide a service through someone's platform doesn't mean you're automatically their worker.
yeahsure··on iPhone 11 Emulated on QEMU
I live in one of these countries. There are lots of people who earn a lot less than 12k/yr but buy brand new iPhones. Why? Because their resale value is awesome. They lose very little value over the years, because a lot of people want to own one, so even used ones retain value. Even if it's something old like an iphone 6 or something like that.

If you buy an android phone, chances are you're going to sell it for a lot less than you got it for unless you're talking about a flagship that's not too old.

yeahsure··on Secure messengers in war time
so "the US" could be offensive? Just curious, English is not my main language.

EDIT: Also totally agree on your other comments about Signal vs Telegram

yeahsure··on The Hidden Costs of Living Alone
Your comment clearly demonstrates OP's argument. Parents believe their time is more important than that of people without children.
yeahsure··on Why Cryptocurrency Is A Giant Fraud
I must say, this article does a terrible job at presenting crypto currencies in a bad way.
yeahsure··on Smartphone Sales Are in Freefall, and That’s Okay
I don't know a single person that owns neither, and I know at least a couple dozen people with an iPhone.
yeahsure··on Facebook to Add Its Name to Instagram, WhatsApp
Technically, the makers of Whatsapp had nothing to do with Facebook.
yeahsure··on Coca-Cola most common source of packaging pollution on UK beaches: study
And who determines the amount an individual can consume per month? I have friends and family that drink at least a bottle a day and have no plans on stopping.
yeahsure··on Ask HN: What is the best “dumb” phone?
My phone screen broke last night. Today I took a small break and sat at a bench in front of my office. I noticed how most people were looking at their phones. Even if they were with others. It's been quite a while since I noticed this and it honestly disturbed me.

The thing is, most of these people are (most likely) not even looking at something important, just their social media or messaging apps.

I noticed a girl who was talking to someone on the phone. She hanged and put the phone in her pocket. Not 10 seconds later she took it out and just started scrolling while walking past me.

yeahsure··on How much does Netflix spend on Amazon AWS?
Well, there are plenty of sites hosting pirated movies that are run by a couple of people.

At the end of the day -unless you really know how many tech/human resources something like netflix needs- you could wrongly asume a few guys could host the content on AWS, use a third party for billing and be done with it.

yeahsure··on How to get rich without getting lucky
I know it's not what most people want, but if you retired to a country with a low cost of living that $1M would be more than enough to live really comfortable till you die.
yeahsure··on Getting Google to ban our entire company
Maybe not what you want, but you could do this using a regular pop3 client and set it to delete copies from the server.
yeahsure··on The Secret to Better Social Media? Fewer Friends
In my country most people have Whatsapp group chats with their friends. Usually more than one group for your different social circles. In my opinion it doesnt work that great. I find that most groups have people with too much time on their hands so when I end up having 100+ messages on the group and I just give up trying to catch up.

yeahsure··on What Bitcoin Reveals About Financial Markets
Yeah but the example the author used had nothing to do with Bitcoin.

And you could also argue that if you took precautions you could setup an anonymous wallet that isn't directly linked to you.
