ycaspirant··on CinemaCLIP: A hybrid CLIP model for the visual language of cinema
What's the use case for this and who are the customers?
ycaspirant··on Ask HN: In the event of a singularity, which stocks would you buy and why?
Without more information, this seems like the most obvious choice. Whatever other companies are using AGI for other purposes, will likely be purchasing it from this company.
ycaspirant··on 999: The world's oldest emergency services phone number
Why isn't there an app for this?

I live in a country where emergency services are completely unreliable, so my main experience of 911 / 999 emergency services is from television and films, and I've noticed a fair amount of friction in the phone call process, especially when it comes to verbally communicating the address. In addition to the phone number, wouldn't it be useful to also have native apps for this which optionally grant GPS access and camera access at the touch of a button?

ycaspirant··on Airbnb expands to experiences
The word "adventure" doesn't appear even once on the Airbnb Experiences page. I think they are two completely different things.
ycaspirant··on Learn data science in your browser
I'm curious to know what made you decide to teach Python 3 instead of Python 2? (I'm only asking because most courses these days seem to favor teaching Python 2).
ycaspirant··on Delhi Government bans Uber, says it is misleading customers
I'm not sure what to think. Uber has proved itself to be a generally scummy company, but in this case I think they are being scapegoated by the government of India. Banning uber is not going to stop rapes in Delhi. Neither are the existing auto and taxi drivers any safer than uber.

Sorry, but I'm unable to see the photos in the TIME link.
ycaspirant··on Can We Predict Which Teens Are Likely To Binge Drink? Maybe
Is ``binge drinker'' a synonym for ``alcoholic''? If not, what's the difference?
ycaspirant··on Can We Predict Which Teens Are Likely To Binge Drink? Maybe
Yes, this is also my primary confusion. What does the term ``binge drinker'' mean? I've never heard of this term so I have no idea what it means or how it should be used. I'm guessing it refers to someone who is addicted to binge drinking, but in that case they might as well use the term ``alcoholic'' which would be far less confusing.
ycaspirant··on Can We Predict Which Teens Are Likely To Binge Drink? Maybe
I'm curious to know how ``binge drinking'' is defined for the purposes of this study. According to them, it seems that some people as ``binge drinkers'' and some are not. I've always thought of binge drinking as an event rather than a personality type. When I was in college, I used to engage in binge drinking quite regularly on weekends, but I would not have described myself as a binge drinker. Actually I'm not so sure of that, because I have no idea what the term ``binge drinker'' even means. Perhaps it means something like ``alcoholic?''
ycaspirant··on Analysis of Over 2,000 Computer Science Professors at Top Universities
Yeah, I was thinking that if you added up all the IIT placements, they would be second only to MIT, but perhaps it's not fair to add them up like that, because each one is a separate institution.

ycaspirant··on OnePlus One – $299 CyanogenMod 'killer' smartphone
Thanks for the clarification. I had actually never heard of this concept of ``unit margin,'' but it makes sense now. It's funny that I managed to go through an entire internship at a financial services firm (which included working with valuation models of AAPL) without ever encountering this concept. I guess it's no surprise that I didn't get offered a job at the end of the internship!

Yes, I also found the title to be ambiguous until I read the article.
ycaspirant··on OnePlus One – $299 CyanogenMod 'killer' smartphone
How could those two things be different? Profit per unit = total profit / number of units
ycaspirant··on Project Naptha: a browser extension that enables text selection on any image
I use Safari, and I find it to be better than Chrome because it's easier to sync with my iPhone and iPad, and with iCloud keychain even my passwords are synced.

I used to track AAPL when I was interning at a financial services firm last summer, and I can assure you that their profit margin is around 20%. Since AAPL is publicly traded, this information is publicly available so anyone can verify it. I'm not sure where you get the idea that their profit margin is 70%.

According to Yahoo Finance (which is a pretty good resource for non-professionals), the profit margin is currently 21%.

ycaspirant··on The New Deal
Upon getting accepted to YC, your company is promised $120K for 7%. Does this imply that if your company is accepted to YC, then it is worth $1.7M (because 7% of $1.7M is $120K)? Or is this not the right way to look at it? Why / why not?
ycaspirant··on Microsoft unveils Windows Phone 8.1 with personal assistant Cortana
Can someone please explain the role that carriers play in the United States? In most countries, the carrier simply provides you with a SIM card that allows you to make use of their network, but they have nothing to do with your hardware / OS. How come carriers control OS updates in the United States?

To me, this sounds as absurd as an ISP having control of your computer - imagine if you had to wait till your ISP allowed you to update your OS. Yet that seems to be your situation with respect to mobile.

ycaspirant··on Amazon Fire TV
Why is this priced on par with Apple TV? That's like pricing a Kindle on par with an iPad. I always thought that unlike Apple, Amazon's strategy was to sell really cheap hardware so that you can consume more content.
ycaspirant··on Amazon Fire TV
Why? That's like saying that Amazon has a motivation to remove the Kindle app from iPhones and iPads so that you'll be forced to buy their Kindle. Amazon actually doesn't care if you buy their hardware or not, they only care about selling you content.
ycaspirant··on 2048 As A Service
Doesn't work for me. I'm using Safari on iOS 7.1.
ycaspirant··on Teen to government: Change your typeface, save millions
Yes, he is a kid, but I believe that the best way to show respect to a kid is to treat him like an adult. The article mentions that he was encouraged to publish in the Journal for Emerging Investigators, and it goes on to say that this journal has the same standards as academic journals. The whole point of this exercise is to treat him like a grown up in the grown up world, because that's the best way of showing respect to a kid.

Therefore, it is in fact your comment that is more disrespectful to the kid than the other comments which are pointing out flaws with his proposal.

ycaspirant··on How Tesla's Fight With Car Dealers Could Help Decide the Next President
>"Of course, to suggest that opposing Tesla violates GOP principles is to assume that politicians are principled at all. More realistically, the politics of the Tesla bans reflect nothing so much as the truism that all politics are local."

-----

I think this is the crucial observation of this article and should be the key take home message. Of course the GOP will claim to champion principles such as innovation, free enterprise, individual choice, etc. but in practice they're ultimately going to pander to their local voter base and its special interest groups.

The terms of funding on Kickstarter are pretty clear and straightforward. You back a project for a certain amount of money in exchange for a promised reward (this reward is never equity). When the time comes you either get your reward or you get your money back. Simple as that.
ycaspirant··on Startups, Role Models, Risk, and Y Combinator
I think what he meant to say is that YC accepts applications from companies at all stages. Once accepted to YC, all companies are given the exact same funding deal.

Sorry, it may not be directly related, but Google also slashed prices for Google Drive about ten days ago.

ycaspirant··on Google Announces Massive Price Drops for Cloud Computing Services, Storage
Does Google Drive support symlinks (symbolic links) on OS X like Dropbox does? If so, I will immediately stop using Dropbox and switch to Google Drive, because it's now five times cheaper than Dropbox.
ycaspirant··on Kim Dotcom plans £109m Mega listing on New Zealand stock exchange
You claim that the new website (mega.co.nz) operates in "much the similar fashion to his previous website," but I don't think that's true. The new website is nothing like megaupload / megavideo. The new website is much more comparable to websites like dropbox / box / onedrive. If you disagree, could you please explain what makes mega.co.nz so radically different from services like dropbox / box / onedrive / etc. ?
