yc-kraln··on The Great Resignation? More Like the Great Renegotiation
The thing is, when most of your money is in illiquid assets (stock, in this case, or houses, etc.) you can reliably get an extremely low interest rate loan against those assets. What does that mean? Let's say you have 10B equity in a company, and you want to buy a used 747 Jumbo Jet--a steal, at $500,000. You only have about $100k liquid cash on you at the moment. No problem! Go to a banker, take an extremely inexpensive loan out against your 10B (think less than 1% interest), and buy your jet. Because it's not income, it's not taxed. But yes, these people do actually have access to that much purchasing power, it's not just abstract numbers.
yc-kraln··on An Experience with Modafinil
I used to describe Modafinil as "the best sleep you ever had, in pill form". As someone with chronic sleep issues and ADHD, it allowed me to function during some of the worst months of my life.

The way I eventually settled on to 'dose' Modafinil is two pills (200mg) on Monday morning, then one pill on Wednesday morning; this kept my serum levels at a level where I got the positive effects for a whole work week, yet could still relax on the weekend.

I haven't been in a situation where I felt I needed this for a while, now.

yc-kraln··on Pijul 1.0 Beta
this should honestly have been on the top of the linked page.
yc-kraln··on Reverse-engineering a tiny 1980s chip that plays Christmas tunes
These chips are everywhere in Shenzhen--usually playing loudly when a gate is opening. It was a bit strange the first time I heard it. Of course, they have no cultural connection to these tunes, so it works fairly well as a warning.
yc-kraln··on Running your own email is increasingly an artisanal choice, not a practical one
I am very happy with my artisanal choice. I have been doing so for several decades, now. Usually only trouble when I have to move to a new IP range (changing colo provider), as it means re-establishing reputation and so forth.

Not a huge issue, and worth it for me.

yc-kraln··on Microsoft Teams: 1 feature, 4 vulnerabilities
YMMV, for my use cases it seems to work really well. I wonder if your instance has been heavily "customized" with group policy, or something.

Given the alternative for us would be slack+zoom+gsuite, which all have impressively daunting privacy concerns as well as pretty crappy usability themselves, I (and the people I am collaborating with regularly) am really happy with Teams.

yc-kraln··on Local man switches to Arch, tells no one
I have windows, macos, and linux machines. Some of the linux machines run arch. There, am I a stereotype now?

Can we focus on what we are using our tools for building, instead of focusing on whatever tools we've chosen? Or are we collectively ashamed, as we should be, of the various ad-tech, spyware, awful society-destroying Molochs that we've created so we resort to tribal screetching about our choice of societal suicide mechanism.

(there, am I a meme yet?)

yc-kraln··on Ask HN: I’d like to hire a personal/executive assistant – any tips or advice?
I find calendly depersonalizing and extremely insulting. I.e. the shift of power when someone says "Hey, let's find a time to chat" and the answer is "Here is my calendly link, good luck". I usually break off the conversation there.
yc-kraln··on Moon’s top layer has enough oxygen to sustain 8B people for 100k years
The moon has no magentic field. There is no protection from cosmic rays, not enough gravity to keep an atmosphere, not for nothing that there is currently no known life there.

Life needs more than oxygen. Why do we keep positioning the Moon as some sort of life boat for when we muck up Earth past the point of survivability?

yc-kraln··on 17B life years could be saved if air pollution was reduced to WHO standards
Interestingly, I found the air in Berlin to be much cleaner (easier to breathe, etc.) than it was where I was living in the United States. I found out that the pollution standards for cars in Europe are, by and large, much stricter than elsewhere.

However, on certain days, various tree pollens make the air almost unbreathable, even to someone without allergies or asthma.

yc-kraln··on WinCompose – A Compose Key for Windows
I don't understand how this is different than the "International" keyboard variants that ship with Windows.

How is this better than the status quo?

yc-kraln··on The Era of Cheap Natural Gas Ends as Prices Surge by 1000%
Please stop calling it "Natural Gas". It's fossil methane.
yc-kraln··on Bayer to Pull Glyphosate Products, from U.S. Home and Garden Market
Animal cells do not have cell walls.
yc-kraln··on A Project of One’s Own
are you me?
yc-kraln··on If someone’s having to read your docs, it’s not “simple”
Yeah, communication is just about explaining what someone should understand. It's a simple concept, and as a result you can be sure that you only need to type a document once, and it's immediately understood. In fact, just like your comment, there isn't any way to misinterpret vague language, or have to cater to someone for whom English isn't their first language.

"Just" is a huge red-flag for me, not just in documentation, but also in effort estimation, requirements gathering, etc. It's the ??? between underpants gnomes and profit.

yc-kraln··on WordTsar, a WordStar Clone
I came into this thread having misread the title as being a "Worldstar" clone--imagine my surprise at it being a text editor from the 70s!
yc-kraln··on Commander X16
I think the lack of USB, as irritating as it is to implement, relegates this to the "curiousity" bin--not for keyboards, per se, but for storage and other connectivity. Still a cool project, though.
yc-kraln··on So you want to build a carbon capture company
Have been evaluating CCS/CCU companies as part of https://one.five.ventures/ and the blog post hits most of the major points--especially around purity vs contamination, miracles of scale, etc.

If you are interested in founding something in the space, please reach out!

yc-kraln··on So you want to build a carbon capture company
This is more-or-less what the EU will be doing along the northern coast of Africa in the future.
yc-kraln··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
I don't disagree that people will pay for this.

I think it's more of a statement that the state of browsers, the web, etc. neccessitates this sort of solution. This is like the underclass taking the trash out of the shining skyscrapers in the middle east by hand: a symptom of a system so broken that people do insane things to pretend that it's not broken.

yc-kraln··on Mars sucks
96% CO2. That's the atmospheric composition of Mars.
yc-kraln··on Thinkpad X230 with “e-Ink” display at 30fps [video]
I have often thought that a device purpose-built for music with one of these transflexive screens would be absolutely fantastic. Even the 10" screens are big enough; Two screens for a folio would make a fantastic device for any musician to travel with.

Now I sort of want to build one. Adafruit doesn't stock them anymore ( https://www.adafruit.com/product/1303 )

Anyone know where I could get two?

yc-kraln··on Unsettling capital letters
Is this a non-AI version of uppest-case? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLRdruqQfRk
yc-kraln··on Bitcoin miners are buying power plants
This is literally a bitcoin mining operating looking to bring a coal-burning powerplant back online. Pay attention.
yc-kraln··on The deck we used to raise our seed funding
* after getting funded by YC.

This deck without the YC stamp would probably not be sufficient for serious investors for a variety of reasons: Missing market size, addressable market, and market growth, doesn't answer the question of "why now"? (whereas why this and why you is answered). It isn't a bad deck but let's be honest here.

yc-kraln··on As U.S. schools shuttered, student mental health cratered, survey finds
US Averages for school funding are completely worthless because schools are funded with property taxes; i.e. wealthy areas have amazingly well funded schools while poor areas have underfunded, overcrowded nightmares.
yc-kraln··on Rockstar thanks GTA Online player who fixed load times, official update coming
Is the resume where all cool accomplishments go after they've faded from the public eye? Your comment struck me as somehow extremely (and unintentionally) fatalistic... that this cool hack will somehow end up churned through the capitalistic society into a bullet point to earn a wage. Actually kind of depressing.
yc-kraln··on Experimental Nintendo Switch Emulator written in C#
The one thing I used to really enjoy about developing for Nintendo platforms once they've aged a bit is being able to have fast test-play cycles without hardware; for Gameboy Advance or Nintendo DS the emulators were very good and fully-featured (debuggers, memory inspection, etc.)

Unfortunately with Switch we're not there, and I don't think we ever will be. These emulators target, in order of priority, Cracked/Dumped Retail Games, then Homebrew games. I can't use them as part of my game development stack because they won't run binaries if they haven't been submitted to Nintendo to be signed (and subsequently cracked).

yc-kraln··on Flameshot – Simple, powerful screenshot tool for all major operating systems
Redundant on Win10 now, too: WIN+SHIFT+S does the same.
yc-kraln··on Rent controls have split housing in Berlin into two distinct markets
Lots of points missing in this article, clearly written by someone looking from the outside and not someone actually familiar with the rental market in Berlin.

Even without these specific rent controls, most rental contracts have either "staffelmiete" or "indexmiete", that is, fixed points at which the rent will increase or an index against which rent is pegged. There are very strong laws supporting renters.

I live in a somewhat newer apartment, so it's not subject to the discussed changes. My rent increases were agreed with the landlord when we moved in, they are fixed in my contract, and after the built in increases are done, the rent won't go up anymore.

The issue with housing and prices is Berlin is not the same as other places in the world. For years Berlin was an economic wasteland. Just now it's become desirable to live here, and there are jobs and an economy to support it. The rent in Berlin is, despite increasing 5-10% per year every year for the past decade, still less than that in Munich or Hamburg. This isn't a case of a speculative bubble or outlier system, just a historically depressed economy returning to the mean, and fast.

Yes, it's unfortunate, that people cannot afford to live in Berlin as they did in 1996. But Berlin is not the city it was in 1996. To alleviate this price pressure, more housing needs to be built than demanded, and that has not been the case for a long time now; place is limited.
