yarou··on Critiques of the DHS and FBI’s Grizzly Steppe Report
Has Scheiner written anything on this report?

I will say this; the Podesta emails revealed a lot about the internal politics of the DNC. Why are we not treating this type of leak with the same level of respect as the Ellsberg leaks? Or for that matter, the Snowden leaks? Who is really controlling the narrative here?

yarou··on Let's start using DuckDuckGo more often
Haha absolutely!
yarou··on The Singularity Is Further Than It Appears (2015)
I hadn't ever thought of it that way. I guess it's a false dichotomy.

I've been reading up on deep belief networks and Restricted Boltzmann machines. Using these tools definitely reflects a deterministic logical process, there just happens to be hidden state involved.

yarou··on Writing software is hard
I'd amend the title to read "writing maintainable software is hard."

I currently work on a codebase, primarily written in C++ targeting embedded. There's an overwhelming amount of technical debt. There are literally comments in certain critical methods saying "//DO NOT MODIFY", because nobody knows what the method actually does. Don't get me started on the maintainability headaches involved with the massive amount of inline ASM.

I have extremely intelligent people on my team. PhDs and patent holders. It becomes problematic when someone who's an expert in MATLAB attempts to translate her code into C++.

Keep in mind, this codebase is used by millions of people across the globe.

yarou··on Stop Obsessing Over Comments On Hacker News (2015)
I'm not sure how valid this premise of this article is.

I would imagine that most startup founders probably spend maybe 10-15% of their day worrying about HN/Product Hunt comments. I forget who said it (maybe pg?), but HN isn't meant to be used as support board, especially for YC companies. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, especially if there is malfeasance or fraud involved.

yarou··on Let's start using DuckDuckGo more often
I actually tend to use Bing. hides
yarou··on Ask HN: Switching from developer to project manager. What to keep in mind?
Nag people (seriously). Be as proactive as possible.
yarou··on The Singularity Is Further Than It Appears (2015)
Probably a hidden Markov process[1]?

yarou··on The Singularity Is Further Than It Appears (2015)
Really fascinating stuff. I guess an AGI has to skirt the boundary between the purely rational (i.e. evaluating statements of propositional logic), and irrational (i.e. intuition).
yarou··on Cyber-Related Sanctions Designations
Political against the incoming President-Elect. It's all the same, however. Multiple layers of intrigues between actors in the deep state. The common man suffers of course, because he no longer has any hope for a better life. Soon he won't have a job either, after we'vr finished building our synthetic God.
yarou··on What Does Any of This Have to Do with Physics?
Let me clarify what I meant. I could be misreading materialism, but the way I understand it is that the universe is essentially a runtime with statically-compiled, singleton objects. The behavior for said objects is determined at runtime.
yarou··on Cyber-Related Sanctions Designations
I think he's complaining about the suspicious timing of the sanctions. In which case it would be 100% political.
yarou··on What Does Any of This Have to Do with Physics?
Reality is immaterial without context.

Can you imagine a universe without qualia? I cannot.

yarou··on How GPS became a human tracking mechanism
> Can't we advocate for better public understanding of, and decentralization of, location services...

Could you clarify what you mean by this? Positioning technologies in general are decentralized. You don't have to rely on the GPS L1 signal, most receivers support GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo outside of the box. You don't need to use WiFi positioning, Bluetooth ranging, or cellular positioning. These tools just give you finer granularity for your current position, minimizing Dilution of Precision.

yarou··on How GPS became a human tracking mechanism
Sponsored content is OK if I'm told in advance that it is. It's extremely deceitful and disingenuous to suggest that ad blocking justifies these sorts of shady journalistic practices.
yarou··on Russians No Longer Dispute Olympic Doping Operation
Not really news IMO. It's quite obvious that most world class athletes use some form of chemical enhancement.

The substances available today for doping are minor buffs, though. Mildronate[1] increases cardiac efficiency/ throughput, for example. However, only a really well-conditioned athlete would gain anything from these substances. Even then we're talking about a 10-15% gain in efficiency.

What I'm personally really excited about are SARMs[2]. These are legitimate fountain of youth compounds that can increase bone density and possible muscle wasting due to age. We may finally have the tools available for viable life extension within this decade.

yarou··on Ask HN: What Are the Best Current Methods to Delete Yourself from the Internet?
I don't think he's suggesting to revise the protocols of the Internet. He's merely asking for a method to delete his online footprints, in which case there are many services to accomplish this task.
yarou··on Tor at the Heart: OnionShare
It does, but it is woefully inadequate for the purpose it supposedly serves.

Uncensoring journalists across the globe? Give me a break.

yarou··on A flight was late because someone named their Wi-Fi hotspot ‘Galaxy Note 7’
It could very well be an honest mistake. Maybe whomever named it was trying to find the network on their Note 7.

Suggesting that someone go to jail over "SSID naming convention contains Note 7" is absurd.

yarou··on Tool AIs want to be agent AIs
> As far as I know, self-driving cars don't learn to drive better in real time. Instead the data is collected and used to improve the software. There might be frequent software releases (perhaps even every day) but this isn't quite the same thing.

Most self-driving cars probably use some variant of local search[1]. In this case it probably doesn't matter if the agent learns offline or online.

yarou··on Orphaned by America's opioid epidemic
The opioid receptors and their corresponding endorphins are truly beautiful. A work of art in its own right.

I think the epidemic here is not one of public health, but of the socioeconomic variety. If you are unemployed and don't have meaningful relationships, you will naturally try to escape your reality. Heroin is the quintessential drug of choice for those who want to dream.

yarou··on Building Jarvis
Why would you care if your projects are upvoted?

When I build side projects, I just care about learning a new language, framework, library etc...I couldn't care less if it got me upvotes on here or anywhere for that matter.

yarou··on American Firms Want to Keep Older Workers a Bit Longer
Sorry dang. I now realize that not everyone can appreciate my unique take on satire.
yarou··on American Firms Want to Keep Older Workers a Bit Longer
I'm sorry, I meant socialism is a great system where everyone is equal! In fact it's so equal, that I want you to have sex with my wife.
yarou··on Ask HN: What motivates you in life?
"Lovers" can work. It's unassailable.
yarou··on Uber continues self-driving vehicle testing in SF in defiance of DMV
Who's going to stop them?
yarou··on American Firms Want to Keep Older Workers a Bit Longer
My father used to tell me stories about the days when India was heavily aligned with the Soviet Union. Apparently, there would be approximately 5 people to stamp your visa.

The excesses of socialism are never lost on me, because of this story.

yarou··on Ask HN: What motivates you in life?
Lust.
yarou··on Ask HN: What motivates you in life?
It's always fun to play with cheats on.
yarou··on Ask HN: What motivates you in life?
I gather you're interested in web development. The best advice I'd give is to pick up a good JS book and build several projects to get a feel for the language.
