You get used to it very fast and it becomes a pleasurable smell...but only your own smoke. If you smell someone else's, especially a different brand, it smells bad still. Now that I've quit for a while they all smell terrible again.

You are implying that my argument isn't from experience when it is. My argument is that you are biased and projecting your own self-control problems on others and treating your solution as a universal truth to be learned. You are also conflating people looking at their phones to your previous drug addiction.

All this being said, if your disdain for that behavior keeps you personally away from bad behavior, I could see how promoting that strategy internally and externally is important to you. Disdain can be a useful tool.

You are the only one feeling sorry for other people in this conversation.

Even people with what would be generally considered great lives chase dopamine. Believe whatever narrative you need to, but in general this behavior is not that deep or problematic vs an actual drug addiction or real problems. It seems you have an axe to grind with anything "self-control" related.

Most jobs don't allow for deep focus or long-term thinking. How do we expect people to be good at it without practice while we encourage the opposite behavior.

Many people's lives are not that good, there are many people with bad jobs they hate, or partners they can't stand. It's easy to imagine why humans act this way.

It's incredibly difficult to keep a viewers attention for 3 hours without them taking a single break, even if they are compelling. I was starting to get antsy in general around the 2h 30m mark.

It's a great analogy for what they were pointing out. The point is not that these issues are traceable and thus inarguably someone's fault. The point is many times people don't have to take responsibility for these issues because they are indirect. The more indirect (the larger the Rube Goldberg Machine) the higher chance of avoiding responsibility.

You can project this lack of understanding on others if you want, but the power cops possess vs civilians is easily observable. Just because being a cop is often unpleasant, doesn't mean they should only get a slap on the wrist for abusing their power. There are many benefits to being a cop, don't act like they're poor little puppy dogs.

It's wishful thinking to believe all people will respect police because they are by definition authoritarians. There are tons of people who don't respect veterans but do I let it bother me? No, because I'm not a fucking cry baby.

If people started attacking other people for being Gluten-free, and the government saw that there was a large amount of cases, they would create regulations trying to curtail the amount of crime targeting those people. They are creating regulation with the intention of lowering crime targeting a small group because it is atypical.

Maybe this has to do with bars wanting to sell cocktails to these consumers and they thought popularizing seltzers would lose them money? I'm not in the industry so I'm not sure how close of ties the Bar Industry has with Alcohol Companies but I'm sure there is a lot of lobbying back and forth.

I like the affectations. It shows other users that noting something of relevance is good user behavior. "Is your comment actually worth noting??" is a good consideration to keep HN high quality. Some users will misuse it but that's very transparent so I believe it's worth mentioning when you believe something is worth mentioning (haha)

I don't have the numbers... but I'm going to assume that regular beer drinkers drink the popular light beers or already have a craft beer they like and spend less money trying new products. It took contentious political media to get die-hards to stop drinking their favorite light beer. That's how ingrained these brands are. It's harder to sell a new Amber Ale than a Juicy Mango/Dragonfruit IPA. These 2 beers serve different personas and the beer industry is focusing on growth over providing new products to their base.

That's a reasonable distinction but just look at the data itself.

There are tons of low level employees posting their salaries. If you work in those roles, that data could be more valuable to a candidate than Glassdoor's amorphous projections.

I enjoyed the Harry Potter games I've played and have played pretty much every "monster" game that exists (Pokemon, Digimon, DQ: Monsters, Monster Rancher, etc). As a fan, I'm sorry to say I don't see myself being interested in a Fantastic Beasts game. I would love to be proven wrong... maybe it's because I didn't enjoy the movies but I don't hear anyone mention fantastic beasts for any reason, good or otherwise.

Most people I know that say the whole "I like being in control" have only drank a few times (maybe bad experiences) but like the idea of not drinking so they promote this narrative in their head. It's an excuse so they can compartmentalize drinking into the "Now I don't have to care about this because it's bad for my physical health anyway" box.

Really it's just an easy excuse that doesn't need to be true because the fact remains that this person doesn't want to be a person who drinks and most won't question it.

It's also possible they get drunk quite easily.

Yes, and there is also a distinct difference of self control between a buzzed/drunk experience, and one where you are absolutely annihilated.
