yRetsyM··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
Whilst I agree that this seems wasteful and perhaps not economically viable , I am excited for the innovation possibilities that could come from this. The early efforts to get into space gave some really life changing technology - maybe this can help us better understand energy use, conservation or dissipation in ways that could help us with our down to earth devices. Phones? Charging devices?
yRetsyM··on OpenAI and Hugging Face address security incident during model evaluation
Holy shit. This wasn't "intentional" this was just openai letting their testing run wild.
yRetsyM··on Apple reports fourth quarter results
Interesting that Google and Apple matched their quarterly earnings in revenue .
yRetsyM··on GPT-5
Still only 256k input tokens/context. Do they not see utility in larger context?
yRetsyM··on DeskHog, an open-source developer toy
Something like this https://www.mylocalbytes.com/products/localdeck?
yRetsyM··on Gemini 1.5 Pro Now Available in 180+ Countries
Not available in the UK - this seems quite common with Google lately, why is that?
yRetsyM··on High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF/.heic)
What is the patent situation for JPEG XL vs AVIF?
yRetsyM··on Cloudflare Experiencing Latency Issues
I'm impressed they've updated their status page so quickly, unlike some of their cloud competitors
yRetsyM··on Old CSS, New CSS (2020)
Side note: the comments in this are all almost as valuable as the content itself. Remember when comments were a way people used to enhance content rather than attack or degrade it?
yRetsyM··on Many of the root certificates on Windows are not needed
You do trust one company with thousands of employees though, there's layers/levels of trust on this
yRetsyM··on TikTok has recently traded at valuations of $105-110B on private markets
Wasn't the same said about Facebook?
yRetsyM··on Gitlab was down
There has been a theme of instability with Gitlab.com over the last week or two. I'm not sure if it's growth related (they've seen a steady increase of users/traffic) and they've reached a scaling peak. OR if it's technically related - they've been doing a number of different infrastructure changes over the last few weeks which make a material difference to the main layers of the service.

For me the real test here is how they respond to this. As a paying customer I want to understand the issue, the efforts to prevent this in future and how they communicate this.

yRetsyM··on CockroachDB 19.2
CockroachDB seems to be getting a lot of attention and marketing cycles lately... What has made it the focus of late?
yRetsyM··on The Google Squeeze
Many people seem to complain about the low quality Google search but don't often offer any better alternatives. I can't help but feel like sometimes the quality of the Google search results reflect the quality of the web in general: stocked with a whole lot of spam content that people actually consume.

How do we fix the web?

yRetsyM··on Google's harvest of medical data includes names and full details of millions
What is actually happening here? A lot of rhetoric about the "Transfer of data" etc, but other times this just reads like a Google Cloud Infrastructure play, with some consulting on top.

Also - The deal was only just signed, e.g. the transfer hasn't happened yet?

There's a lot of hearsay in all of this reporting...

yRetsyM··on [dead]
The infrastructure/SRE team at gitlab are tracking and monitoring the problem here: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-com/gl-infra/production/issues/132...

Latest updates suggest that it is related to their SQL services being slow, possibly as a result of a big import

yRetsyM··on Ask HN: Feasible Alternative to the MacBook Pro?
I'm curious about this as well, I'm more in a hybrid role now where less and less coding effort and I'm living in Chrome anyway for most of my tasks...
yRetsyM··on Monzo: How our security team handle secrets
Their outages have not affected everyone and often affect a small slice of the service.

Also, other banks have the same kinds of outages, often, but are not as transparent or communicative as Monzo.

I've been full Monzo for the last 18 months and have never had an issue.

yRetsyM··on South Park Responds to Being Banned in China for “Band in China”
Just as a counter to this, war invokes similar behaviour and a lot of people often support that.

yRetsyM··on Microsoft announces new Surface Duo phone
"Partnering with Google" - Be very interesting to see what that partnership entails.
yRetsyM··on Why do developers at Google consider Agile development to be nonsense? (2016)
I read the masses as anyone but he development team. Who's to say that the masses doesn't mean Googlers? It wasn't categorising anyone aside from being "everyone else" as I read it
yRetsyM··on Freeing My Phone from Google
Can't is the wrong statement. The can be. Whether they choose not to or not is a different conversation, but technically they definitely can tie these together from IP address alone.

I get frustrated with the hoodwink that Apple seems to be playing, as they move to services based revenue I have no doubt these lines are going to get blurrier and blurrier.

yRetsyM··on Y Combinator invests in Monzo through its Continuity Fund
Another victim of Brexit uncertainty, as I understand it - because of uncertainty of best approach post Brexit they paused continental Europe plans.
yRetsyM··on Y Combinator invests in Monzo through its Continuity Fund
They have a number of money making initiatives. As the see themselves as the "hub"[1] for your finances the biggest opportunities I think are probably outside of core lending functions.

- Partnership/Affiliate revenue by way of their "marketplace" initiatives. They get a cut of recommending services for customers. Recent examples include new utility (electricity) providers. [2] Also interest/savings accounts. [3]

- Monzo Plus - "premium" banking features such as virtual cards, metal cards, access to a curated "cheaper" market place [4]

- Monzo Business - business banking, initially focused on small - medium sized business with invoicing, payment and tax management built in [5]

- core lending as other customers have pointed out

yRetsyM··on Google I/O Developer Keynote [video]
Some of my highlights:

- The big move to on-device ML for things like speech recognition. This was especially demonstrated with an accessibility angle, showing global subtitles available for any application. And an assistant that allowed you to answer and reply to phone calls using TTS and back.

- Android Q big focus on privacy, promoting privacy to a top level menu item in settings, as well as adjustments in apps to provide ready-access to privacy features.

- Large focus on security, including calling out Gartner reports many times, having the most secure operating system in a number of tests, and most secure device (Pixel).

- Google Home products rebranded as Google Nest. Launch of Google Nest Hub Max ($229), with Camera allowing for Duo calling, and a nice hand gesture to silence the device when loud/noisy (no more shouting)

- Pixel 3a (XL) devices launched, at a lower price point of $399 ($479) with a decent set of features. No longer Verizon exclusive.

- Google wants to be "Helpful"

yRetsyM··on Jenkins Is Getting Old
You can definitely do all of your requirements, but likely as a result of recent features

1) you can customise the git checkout depth and style: https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/ci/yaml/#shallow-cloning https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/ci/yaml/#git-strategy

2) https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/ci/yaml/#onlyexcept-basic

3) https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/ci/yaml/#tags

I'm not associated with gitlab at all but happy to give pointers if anyone wants to contact me direct

yRetsyM··on Anthos – Build and manage modern hybrid applications
> Anthos is a subscription-based service, with the list prices starting at $10,000/month per 100 vCPU block. Enterprise prices then to be up for negotiation, though, so many customers will likely pay less.

> Google will offer a single managed service that will let you manage and deploy workloads across clouds [...] This is Google, after all, managing your applications for you on AWS and Azure
