xxxtentachyon··on Suspect is arrested in grisly killing of tech CEO Fahim Saleh
I live nearby, and a black suit and a tie would look pretty out of place that far east in Lower East Side, especially now
xxxtentachyon··on Coronavirus: Hard-hit Brazil removes data amid rising death toll
I’m totally out of the loop on Hungary. Who’s hoping for Orban to fall, and why is that problematic for Hungary?
xxxtentachyon··on Rust DataBase Connectivity (RDBC)
Andy Grove is a PMC on Apache Arrow, and a great columnar store community member. It was probably less of a literature review for him than a reflection on past experience.
xxxtentachyon··on Lyft’s algorithm is trying to block people with names like ‘Dick’ and ‘Cummings’
Or just not filter names on an app like Lyft. You can't even see other users' names. Who is potentially being harmed by even a malicious Professor Fuck?
xxxtentachyon··on SAR Imagery Reveals Presence of Concealed Sub at North Korea’s Sinpo Naval Base
Seoul's proximity to the border and the NK artillery based there complicates things more than you suggest: https://worldview.stratfor.com/article/how-north-korea-would...
xxxtentachyon··on Is Fry’s Electronics in trouble?
+1 for Tinkersphere, I walked there a few hours ago to get a micro HDMI-to-HDMI and some headers.
xxxtentachyon··on Annual Returns on Stock, T.Bonds and T.Bills: 1928 – Current
Nope, just that even if you do have data that captures when and at what price a company exited an index, you still wouldn't quite be able to work back to the performance of a tracking index fund (because you don't when and what price the index fund sold)
xxxtentachyon··on Annual Returns on Stock, T.Bonds and T.Bills: 1928 – Current
But it should be said that the price that the fund manages to sell the shares at could be far lower than the price at the time the company exited the index since many funds and others will be trying to get out at the same time.
xxxtentachyon··on Ask HN: What tech choices make “new” Reddit so unbearably slow?
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/old-reddit-re...
xxxtentachyon··on Duolingo becomes first VC-funded $1B Pittsburgh tech startup
It's definitely not "just" spaced repetition in the way that Anki is (asking you how difficult it was to recall the answer and choosing to ask you again at some time "t + now" in the future, where "t" is determined by your answer). As far as I can tell, as you're working through a tree in Duolingo, it tries to sprinkle in words that you've seen a few checkpoints ago, but it doesn't seem to do so dynamically based on demonstrated mastery or lack thereof of the words sprinkled back in.
xxxtentachyon··on Tesla Cybertruck
This feels more like if Master Chief drove an Aztek
xxxtentachyon··on Bye, Chrome: Why I’m switching to Firefox (2018)
Nope, but this article isn't aimed at HN readers. It's aimed at lay people who don't necessarily understand what actions they're taking to implicitly undermine their own privacy or jeopardize the future of an open, standards-driven web. Katherine has written other, more innovative pieces around the same issues: https://www.fastcompany.com/90369697/googles-new-recaptcha-h...
xxxtentachyon··on Time to Take Down the Mona Lisa?
It was in a different wing with other 19th century French art when I visited in 2016, but yes, it was huge, imposing, and very moving
xxxtentachyon··on Code Health: Respectful Reviews == Useful Reviews
This is exactly the tone I try to strike, especially with junior colleagues. I never want to make someone’s decision seem unambiguously wrong-headed when it comes to subjective engineering matters. That just breaks someone’s confidence.
xxxtentachyon··on Airbnb Suffers Big Defeat in Jersey City
I mean, maybe? But how many buildings want to take the additional technological burden of coordinating this sort of thing
xxxtentachyon··on Key Change
How is it a money grab? There's no recurring subscription fees to play CS:GO
xxxtentachyon··on After Spike in Deaths, New York to Get 250 Miles of Protected Bike Lanes
I live and work in lower Manhattan (about a 15 minute commute each way by bike) and I will ride a Citi bike to work unless there are multiple inches of snow on the ground
xxxtentachyon··on Omniviolence Is Coming and the World Isn’t Ready
But even then, historical analogues haven't been exploited that often. We've had probably thousands of people with access to weaponizable Smallpox etc in the US and former USSR for many decades now and no one has made any known attempt to use it, sell it, ...
xxxtentachyon··on Adam Neumann will determine WeWork's fate
What interest does Japan have in doing that?
xxxtentachyon··on Amazon is shipping expired food, customers say
1000%. If the Tylenol tainting scandal happened in 2019, would it have been sold through Amazon’s supply chain?
xxxtentachyon··on Amazon is shipping expired food, customers say
I read it as:

- the “spider” being metonymic for Amazon’s web, i.e. the big, apparently tangled, globe-covering supply chain that Amazon has built

- the “big table” to be the proverbial “grown-ups’ table” that Amazon is sitting at, in contrast to the suppliers at the kids’ table

- the rest is clear. You can’t blame the assimilated (suppliers); blame the assimilating Borg (Amazon) and so on

xxxtentachyon··on ABC news is trying to pass gun range videos as combat footage from Syria
I think I can take it as an axiom that in order for a democracy to function well, the people in it need to know what's going on both domestically and abroad. Who do you suppose should go out and find and publish needed information? If your answer isn't "journalists", then what separates those people from journalists?
xxxtentachyon··on Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram Restricted in Southern Turkey
Many times? During the US Civil War, Great Britain gave serious thought to intervening on behalf of the Confederacy on whom they depended for cotton supplies (India at the time was still experimenting with cotton horticulture), and gave tacit financial support throughout the war. Virtually all of the Latin American civil wars of the second half of the last century saw the US give material or military support to anti-communist forces.

xxxtentachyon··on Y Combinator Top Companies List 2019
How do you go about trying to track the conversion rate on organic advertising-cum-Reddit post? It seems like it'd be impossible without the consent of Reddit.
xxxtentachyon··on Tensorflow 2.0
What’s incredibly slow? Installing things with conda?

xxxtentachyon··on Prashanth Chandrasekar Replacing Joel Spolsky as Stack Overflow CEO
Ignoramus here, what does SO have to do with remote work besides being a distributed team?
xxxtentachyon··on Uber lays off 435 people
What horrendous software quality? Uber consistently puts out some of the cleanest mobile experiences for a mass market app, and their research teams put out great OSS work.
