xx__yy··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
Nice try NSA
xx__yy··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
Agreed, but give it time. The tipping point of good models only just arrived with Fable 5, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.6, Muse Spark 1.3, and the like. Those are the only models that do a better job than me, and I'm happy to hang up my IDE—and that was barely a month ago.

I've been fixing everything that has been sitting there—not blocking us, but slowing us down—all the things we never had the bandwidth for. We're now squeezing more out of development, CI, and production.

I'm not sure why, but I'm concerned this may be the heyday, and we might not get this again at this price or speed. So I figured we should clear the backlog while we can still afford it and still have the ability to do so.

But now things have changed, and the bigger, grander ideas are starting to brew.

Nice work!

But missing the iconic Ghan in Australia https://digital-classroom.nma.gov.au/images/route-taken-ghan

xx__yy··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
I'm not sure why everyone is so up in arms here. Just means you can't buy one in a store. I've bought a lot of 1+ for myself and family, and not once for a physical or online Australian store. Just for overseas sites. That doesn't change. The 1+ store in AU was only offering models a couple years old, never the latest. So this news changes nothing for me. Still great bang for buck and easily mod-able.

My family and I have been on OnePlus since the beginning, and I just recently got the 15R (which is a beautiful phone, and awesome bang for buck). I've been recycling all my old OnePlus by putting linageOS or AxionOS, and they feel like new again. The alternative Android firmware space is thriving. I just got Android 16 on a Nord N30 5G "Avicii" - it's blazingly fast. Funnily enough, N30 which is close to 6 years old has 12GB of RAM, which is the same as the latest 15R. I'm still a OnePlus flagship killer fanboy

Lineage as or AxionOS nowadays. Both are excellent and better than stock 1+ OS
xx__yy··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
OnePlus are still edgey, get one of their +5YO phone and put Axion on it - Android 16 like it should be, and super snappy
xx__yy··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
Put Axion on it - it's like new then

Hilarious read, but scary too, I doubt the outcome will be the same in a few years
xx__yy··on Firefox Merges Support for Vulkan Video Decoding
Is it just me or were they a bit behind? Chromium already has it
xx__yy··on Judson's Last Ride
WOW! That was a very heavy read, not what I expected from HN, but I am grateful to have read it. As a parent of a child with autism, who also rides the bus to school, and with many other parallels to the author's story, it was a difficult read. We're 8 years away from the "last day on the bus"; it certainly made me ponder about the situation.

I think a lot about my son's future and all the missed opportunities, but the author put some of this in a different perspective that has changed my perspective slightly. But I do think my son knows what he's missing out on when observing others his age and watching TV.

xx__yy··on Mesh over Bluetooth LE, TCP, or Reticulum
Great to see yet another project to provide "offline"-ish comms. The existing solutions are obviously not good enough yet, hence why all these projects are popping up. I hope we get to a good-enough one soon.

LoRa is great, but the bandwidth is terrible, so you'd be limited to Twitter sized messages when using this comms channel.

What a great project, thanks for sharing.

I'm not that cluey, but from the README it sounds like it can be compiled for a bunch of arches

xx__yy··on Writing FreeDOS Programs in C
I don't know the answer, just asking the question: Is/Was curses available at the time? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curses_%28programming_library%...

I only remember conio at the time, but without internet you just used what Microsoft gave you. The BBSes I used may have had it, but it's hard to use something if you don't know it exists.

It does look like there is a recent port: https://github.com/wmcbrine/PDCurses

So my guess is curses was not available to DOS at the time, only Unix systems.

xx__yy··on Being blocked from contributing to lodash
As an aside, since it seems the other comments already address the core issue...

No one should be using Lodash in 2025, it mutates your collections, use `ramda` (https://ramdajs.com/) instead.

Unfortunately, a lot of the early core existing packages have dependencies in lodash, or another packages that does so too.

xx__yy··on Hawaii Highways
I was having roughly the same thought. I thought to myself, this is something my son would produce, and I'd be super proud, and see through the 90's/Yahoo-ish style.

Then I saw the date of the last update: http://www.hawaiihighways.com/what's-new.htm So comprehensive!

xx__yy··on TIL: timeout in Bash scripts
I like this solution better, no bash running a string command.

Could easily prefix eventually_succeeds with timeout.

xx__yy··on The end of an AI that shocked the world: OpenAI retires GPT-4
A bit of a nostalgic read, I bet everyone remembers the first time they tried ChatGPT-4, and the conversations about it at gatherings/BBQs.

But I don't feel like it's gotten any better, if anything I feel like it's been "dumbed-down" a bit (possibly from added safeguards/censorship).

AI coding assistants (e.g. Co-Pilot) has made me a more productive developer, but only in the sense that I type less boiler plate (or ceremony code).

xx__yy··on Ground beef stimulates more protein synthesis than soy based meat
> allow for the formulation of better sources of protein

I don't think the "National Cattleman’s Beef Association" wants that, just to know that beef>Soy is enough.

xx__yy··on The rise and impending fall of the dental cavity
I wonder if using mouthwash that kills "99%" bacteria make this product useless over time?

Also, does using mouthwash daily negate the need for this product?
