Just like there isn't such a thing as polymaths anymore because the world has so many specialized skills, I think there won't be the possibilities of things like "full stack developer" in the near future because of the complexities for development. Some things that contribute to the complexities will be: ubiquitous controls, advanced AI, internet of things, augmented reality, machine learning, and new technologies we don't even have yet. We are in the golden age now where a single person can sometimes create a better website or app compared to a whole development team at a fortune 500 company. I think our Internet world will become so complex in the very near future that a single person simply won't be able be capable and they'll have to become specialized in only a portion of it.
I got hit with a Western Union scam when I was a teenager. I spent numerous hours on the phone with WU trying to get any information on who picked up the money. Name, id, or even city where they picked it up. WU understood I had been robbed but refused to help me.
Apple should be next. Once I had an iPod stolen and Apple refused to help me recover it. They wouldn't give me the IP or geolocation of where it was or even tell me if it connected to iTunes and whos account it connected as.
From these two events, I always felt that Apple and Western Union aided and protected criminals and thieves.
For me, it's having a successful blog that is on topic to the position. When I started my current job 7 years ago, I started a blog then which was simply a repository of lessons learned, scripts I can reuse in the future, cheat sheets, and videos. I still use it today to look up how I did something years ago, but apparently a lot of other people use the site too. The blog demonstrates the following to any potential people willing to hire me:
* A sample of my writing skills
* A sample of my design skills
* A sample of my engineering skills (shown in scripts and codes)
* A sample of my documentation skills
* Additional proof that I am passionate/skilled/interested about this type of work.
I don't consider Pebble to be a startup anymore. I'm not sure why so many comments here use that term. They have found a repeatable, stable, and scalable business model that works and have been successful with it for years. Their watches are sold in Best Buy, Target, Walmart and other retail stores. Once you hit that level of main stream popularity I would say you're no longer a startup.
It was shocking to me to see Kickstarters for Pebble after their initial watch came out. After they had already been for sales in major retail stores. They should have solidified their business model by then and been profitable already. I feel like Kickstarter should be there to get your initial idea launched and if you can't take flight from there, don't do another.
Anyway, huge Pebble fan here, super sad to see them mismanage their assets that resulted in this.
Is this primarily for static sites like Jekyll and Hugo? If so, could you add some kind of tutorial on how to get my Jekyll blog hosted on static.land? I'm not familiar with node, and your docs don't mention how to do a `git push`, only `staticland deploy`. What is the technology behind `staticland deploy`, git, ftp, https?
It's a bias that you can trust but verify. For instance, AV software, and web filtering apps rate websites you visit with a score and could block you from visiting sites with a low score to keep you "safe". If web filtering vendor A is a competitor of vendor B or doesn't like the world view of candidate X, they could easily block you from going there. So we have to trust but verify. This is why open source is helpful so we can see the algorithm or reasons why something is blocked.
This is what I was thinking too, if a big firm hires a amateur cryptographer to make a new cipher it can be very costly later. So you need to be very good at it to get a job. Secondly the jobs mostly exist on the cutting edge of research and revolve around future cryptography implementations.
I was trying to paint the picture that Facebook is the one passing along messages from one person to another. So yes, people could turn their computer off and go directly to someone elses house and tell them the message, but I think we've grown accustom to sending messages to each other over social media.
Suppose you were the person to relay the message though.
Imagine one friend tells you "Can you please tell Adam X", but you know X is a flat out lie and is actually horrible and offensive. So do you agree to spread the lie? Oh and you're doing this free, and it's not your friend it's 2 strangers.
Probably not. What's probably happened is that people of Facebook looked internally and realized they had the power to sway this election and didn't act on it. It's weird because we want Facebook to not sway us and let us build our own belief structure, yet in this case maybe I would want Facebook to do something, and help not spread lies and misinformation may be something everyone can get behind (except snopes).
Something that seems to disappoint me about big game studios like Blizzard is the smallish number of games they've made. With a creative staff where probably 100% of them are gamers, I'm sure the number of game ideas is just overflowing within. I wish Blizzard would try making more smaller games to see if it picks up any traction. I think of Blizzard let their game designers spend 20% of their time on their own project they'd find a ton of new revenue generating games.
I'm hoping bonfire games has a hit game released to get started with then focus on smaller games after that so we can be entertained in numerous new ways.
I like to think of this in a different context. Being just a normal employee in a normal job. Suppose you get an idea to make the company more money or to automate all your work. Great. Suppose you even tell your manager your idea. The manager likes the idea but does nothing about it. You're now no better then when you've started. The real magic comes when you have the idea an execute on it yourself. Now when you have a stronger concept that you're ready to demo and show it to your boss, your boss will see you in a much different light. You're not just a worker, you're an innovator that with the right resources, can make the company more money. It's this kind of thing that has the potential to multiply your salary x10.
As an interviewer, I love this question, but I don't have very good luck with it. My goal is for them to find the area they know the most about and tell me about it extreme detail. But the answer I always get is very short and broad, and never dives into anything.
I will probably modify the question to just ask about how the TCP/IP portion works, or just ask about how the HTML rendering portion works.
Lame title. Story talks about storing password hashes and not passwords. I'm still looking for a solution to storing actual user passwords. Scenario: All laptops in the company have a unique local administrator password. How do I manage this effectively as a domain admin?
We all know we have to move to something new, we just mostly agree that IPv6 is not a very good solution to our problem. It's full of problems, has no killer feature, and has no good transition methods.
Individuals undergoing screening using AIT generally will have the option to decline an AIT screeningin favor of physical screening. Given the implementation of ATR and the mitigation of privacy issues associated with the individual image generated by previous versions of AIT not using ATR, and the need to respond to potential security threats, TSA will nonetheless mandate AIT screening for some passengers as warranted by security considerations in order to safeguard transportation security.
When I first read the headline this is what I was hoping for. Auto generated, upbeat, electronic music, that continuously changes, which I can listen to it all day while at work. I need music playing all day, and these days I've been trying to find electronic music that is non-memorable yet upbeat so that it's motivating but not distracting.
Instead I got a 5 minute long song. For my needs, I'll stick with soundcloud "Dj sets" which seem to go on for a few hours each.
