xquce··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
Most countries have versions of this, not unique to China. Many parents are willing to use their kids to achieve what they could not and be successful even in horrible ways. In the US you have child stars, beauty competition, sport sponsorships, talent scouts and alot more horrible ones I won't mention, ways that parents push their kids into fucked up industries, drugs, surgeries etc.

Not to defend this, but to say I wouldn't blame China but instead the international culture of everybody that watches a video of children online or tv. Stop it, it is never for the enjoyment of the child, always the fucked up adults around them.

I always cringe when someone shows me a video of someone who has an amazing singing talent and it's some 7 year old...

Same reason Coca-Cola only mention Pepsi and Pepsi only mention Coca-Cola. It's an proven way to capture the market. You would rather split the pie in two rather than in 4,12 or 50 right?
xquce··on The most important product decision is what you don't build
Great question!

My answer below would assume that said idea was evaluated fairly and it's not a PM Ego thing, which we must watch out for and also be open about because as a judge of these input, people have to trust you. Also you must be close and on good terms with both devs and sales, in which case it will still happen but that way my way worked best.

What I do (former PM now CEO) is an explanation of why said feature is not in scope of the product and marked as "Closed" and not just deleted. Can't be created again and merge new ones into the closed ticket with the statement and analysis of why it isn't in scope.

Then what have worked for me, is a talk about responsibility. If you as the PM is responsible for the product, it's market fit and its cost, but they want to add something, turn the cost and responsibility over to them. Is the Dev ok with taking in the cost, meeting with upper management, support and sales for said feature, and if sales OK with that feature coming out of the sales budget and support maintenence moved to them etc.

If the product starts not being able to get sold or bloats it's cost, will those people sign up to take the blame/be responsible with you?

If they push back ask them if they are OK with you doing the same to them. You as the PM have now chosen you want the devs to use X framework instead of Y or SQL and not Postgress, but they keep the responsibility for it working still, how does that sound? As withe the devs, with sales talk their language and ask if they ok with risking a shift of ICP or product focus where they might not hit their targets and you ask them to change their sales methods to fit that, product lead vs sales lead or indeed face to face vs phone whatever.

xquce··on 'My Husband Has No Friends'
Not turning to a friend for emotional support, is not the same as not having friends.

That study would point to men having other ways to deal with emotions or indeed bottle them up, but the phenomenon of having friends or not like OP said, perhaps isn't gendered.

xquce··on Things That Annoy Me About Cars
What make and model? I have not sat in a modern car where this have been a problem, ever. I drive a model 3 Tesla with glass roof and there is simple no issues with Sun glare from the sunsglasses like filter on the glass roof.

Indoors most people indeed love windows, even moreso if they are roof windows. I agree dont hang a spotlight in your face, but that is hadly the same as the Sun, otherwise how do people their houses walking, running biking without roofs?

xquce··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Is every 50 year old business guy doing it? If not then OPs comment holds. He said not everyone can, not that only devs can use it, which is true.
xquce··on AirPods 5
Yes. That's alot of battery life for in-ears of that size. Also you add hours more in a 10 min charge from the case. If you have to wear headphones for more than 5 hours straight without a few min break, you have other issues than th technology.
xquce··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
It did well commercially looking just at steam stats, not to mention the other platforms. It seems like alot of that was used to turn it around to save their reputation to keep going not only with one game, but to make sure the next isn't "stay away" labeled even it is "wait and see" for many.

“That kind of poor customer service just won't fly in the US.” First time hearing someone claim consumer protections are better in the US and the EU. People lose whole decades of data from top world top 10 largest US companies and those have no service and no consumer protection in the US nor court justice ad those where waived in their ToS. If you didn't get the product you purchased and are in the EU you can take it to your ombudsman
xquce··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Aren't most opinions locked behind an account, usually with a pay wall in front? I don't mean new tech, speaking of traditional ones. Politicians or whomever, interview with a journalist locked behind a cable subscription or a newspaper or magasine? Someone sharing their thoughts in their latest book bought at one of 3 places with one of the 2 available transactions companies that link you to the final "content".

I am not on Twitter/X.

xquce··on China is fueling America's data center rage
Are all of China's problems caused by the US then? Or contrary to your beliefs, does people have their own home grown problems and should seek to solve them instead of looking at the other nearby tribe to blame.

So fun seeing Americans blame Russia for their issues with racism and China for their issues of bad infrastructure. As if both didn't predate the founding of those countries.

I get what you are saying, I however just don't agree. GTA has it roots in a story about the criminal world in a version of a US city with a clash of many subcultures within it.

I don't see at what time they tried to cater to teens, outside the parodying themes of that generation which they fit perfectly. I saw that every installment representative of a criminal from one of these cultures to top of the criminal food chain. Be it the Scar Face parody of Vice City, Gang culture of San Andreas, the Immegrant story of the 4th or the trio they went for with the 5 with the LA story melting pot.

As a none-american it perfectly represented the characters and views of over the top depictions of the movie version of these places.

xquce··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
Almost every reply to your comment points out your example "being smart" with a tired one of family vs work. What people in many other comments here point out that for many familie is just one of many areas in life and can have nothing to do with smarts or happiness.

Is the man abandoning his wife and child to find a better life happier for it, he can be. Has nothing to do with if he used his smarts to arrive at that solution to his unhappiness or resolution.

How many people choose their family based on some calculation where there is a right or wrong answer?

Like an comic said, most people choose their life partner while drunk in a bar (obv local example) but no way you would ever choose which toaster to buy while drunk! The toast have to be just right, doesn't it?

xquce··on Stop eating Lady Gaga's Oreos
In the capitalist Utopia that would be true, but that is not the case in any country on this planet. The war being waged is not based on customer choice, its based on backroom dealing, who you know and invester interrests.

The products used by many are the products their investors have an interest boosting. One example look at what SaaS startups seeded on this site use, other SaaS from same network and investors.

Nothing about it based on war of pricing, quality or experience.

xquce··on People are worried about America's solvency
Abit glib to call it hyped when the US has started multiple wars to protect the petrodollar. Trying to do business any other way puts targets on whole countries, much less the speaker and their family. Many attempts were made in the middle east and Africa to make that change, and those people and governments were wiped out.

While the argument can be made for it's economic effect and power today vs 20 years ago, I don't think it was overhyped then.

xquce··on US Military asks troops for 'creative and unconventional' ideas to punish Iran
The point was that the US, under its theocratic rulers, is not a peace-loving nation that keeps to itself. That is the case regardless of whether Iran's rulers choose Mahatma Gandhi or Genghis Khan to be their great satan.
xquce··on I'd not buy a LG monitor
Surely Microsoft have the expertise and resources to make a platform of driver signing that separate addon software and basic driver needs? Why should a USB headset plugged in be allowed to auto install audio software, recording software, antivirus software and adware, and not even from the device itself but fetch it from Windows Update platform) without the users consent? Surely it would just install the needed audio driver to pass sound as signed by Microsoft, with an option for the rest?

The proposed solution to this huge issue in windows isn't to let average users fend for themselves, no one is arguing that.

xquce··on Netflix employee fired for sharing personal details in retreat trust exercise
Just to add a followup to my story. If you can't find it, find people and create it!

What I did was to build my own grass field(started company with my team) and it has been fucking great. We made a better product and made enough of a name of ourselves, that while I lost the battle that time with the former leadership, I fought long enough to see them all lose their jobs.

As a CEO myself now, I choose not to have an HR rep and try to do better for my people.

Also this is in EU so as a warning to others, like me then, who thought HR in the US could do this but not here.

xquce··on Our position on open-weights models
I often wonder why that is. I think the old playbook for companies is just too slow and the consequences of the "new mask off" are not present in the current climate in the US. Everytime these CEOs make these announcements I always feel like they aren't talking to me, their costumers or the people but to the investors and their government. Something they have always said and done, just those conversions were behind closed doors and would be scandalous if heard. Now the playbook is to blog/tweet those fucked up views for more effect and faster reaction to get what you want.
xquce··on Our position on open-weights models
Yes and the USA trained and gave weapons to the Taliban and many other terror organizations. "China sold none weapons to another country" really pales in comparison.
xquce··on Netflix employee fired for sharing personal details in retreat trust exercise
Because HR lies and say the opposite in the majority of companies. "Come to us with any problems, it's safe and anonymous, we are here to help you".

From personal experience I have reported gross treats by senior leadership to an HR rep who was shocked about hearing their HR employee evals being suppressed by only allowing score between 8-10 in a 1-10 score. The HR rep confirmed it personally that it was happening and a few months later appeared on the other side of the desk with the leadership as they fired me for budget reasons.

xquce··on Trump Asked FIFA to Review U.S. Player's Suspension. Now He's Eligible to Play
In the US it will soon be reported that the US won the FIFA World Cup, meanwhile in North Korea it will be reported they won it.
xquce··on Netflix Viewers Are Abandoning Shows After One Season
To comment on the software/UX side: Well one reason might be how horrible Netflix is at handling what people have watched and if something you watch has a new season (outside of the week that season releases). AppleTV start the home screen with large trailer but with a watch list just below it, and that list then will display a show you watched to the end but that a new episode/season released on. Makes it much easier to watch new seasons of shows I've watched without having to manually remember and find them. Also Netflix insistance in recommendations of content you just watched (eg not taking watched status into account) just makes this even worse because shows with no new content are on same lists as shows with new..
xquce··on The unbearable cheapness of open weight models

xquce··on Digital euro clears key hurdle as EU seeks to break free from U.S. credit cards
which ones use Credit Cards to a larger degree than Debit Cards, like they do in the US?
xquce··on The AirPods Effect
Agree with the first part, very important! Not the second, however.

I joined my local fitness gym some months ago and use it to connect to people in the small town I moved to. Almost every time I'm there I manage to chat to someone briefly, and 50% of them have earpods in. Most of them now look up and greet me when we pass and multiple have up to me on other days to chat afterwards.

It's a skill and part of that skill is being able to give people an out of the chat if they don't feel for it, not interrupting at a bad time (mid set in a gym setting). My starter is usually a quick question with a "thank you so much, I'm new here" and if they reach for earpods to put back as they say you welcome, perfect you don't keep going. For the ones who want to chat keep them off and respond or ask something in return.

So headphones/earpods can be a barrier but for me it's a useful barrier and a clear signal, which helps both parties.

You can hate ALL Russians all you want but it's not whataboutism to call you out on the hypocritical and hateful position you take. Saying you have issue with not only a country but all it's people and their offerings because of the countries effects on friends and families just means in the case of the US, that you have no friends that are: Black Americans, Native Americans, Latino Americans, pretty much all of South Americans, large portions Africans, the Balkans, Vietnamise, Most of the Arab countries etc?

Surely the rational position to take is to hate the countries policies not all their citizens. I also dislike Russia policies but boycutting or hating the creator of 7 Zip because he is Russian seems weird.
