xgbi··on A study of research on the psychology of expertise in weather forecasting
The topic is interesting and the paper looks well sourced, but I find the title to be quite the mouthful!
xgbi··on GNU Radio software-defined radio (SDR) implementation of a LoRa transceiver
Do you think it could be adapted so that we can use an rpi and pwm on a gpio to have a rx/tx without the RF component?
xgbi··on US inflation means families are spending $709 more per month than two years ago
I don’t understand how you can spend so much. Even with inflation we (family of 4, cooling all meals at home) are at less than 800€/$ per month.

And we eat meat nearly all meals.

xgbi··on Coming Soon: Fedora for Apple Silicon Macs
> I've been using Asahi based on Arch [...] and should mention that the experience has been stellar overall.

> I fully plan on moving entirely to Asahi Fedora [...] Fedora has a stronger team and less issues

Why do you plan to change if the experience has been stellar? You mention issues, what kind did you encounter?

I'm sorry if this feels rude, but I read your comment as a praise to Arch and then took an 180° turn to "I will switch to fedora ASAP".

xgbi··on Ingest OpenTelemetry metrics with Prometheus natively
Anyone with experience scaling Prometheus horizontally ? We are reaching the limits of our instance, memory and cpu wise, and I’m yet to choose between scaling it myself with sharding or using thanos/Victoria/cortex.
xgbi··on Intel exiting the PC business as it stops investment in the Intel NUC
The form factor is way bigger than a NUC that fits on a vga mount!
xgbi··on Using Nginx to block Meta, Twitter and ChatGPT access to your sites
why not both?

and check your logs to see who is not complying

xgbi··on Why sqlite3 temp files were renamed 'etilqs_*' (2006)
I had an interesting issue with that the other day:

Someone on my company thought it good to launch background process from within a cron, and start it with `&ˋ at the end, so that it detached from the cron and goes as child to init .

Right, but the program opens std out and dumps its output in it. Guess what, the fd handling the std out ends up in a temp file which is deleted by cron, but still held by the program.

I ended up with a full / in all production servers, with no culprit when running ˋdu`. Only running ˋlsof |grep deleted` did I find these huge temporary files.

Killing the process and switching to a saner systemd service was the savior.

xgbi··on Add $4 WiFi Logging to IKEA’s $12 Air Quality Sensor (Wemos and Vindriktning)
I did it a few years ago, it was very easy to do, and integrated very fine with Home Assistant.

It's not too hard to do, you just have to have the component, and some solder.

The main issue I have is the noise, it is really noticeable (and the sound mode makes it less accurate: https://github.com/Hypfer/esp8266-vindriktning-particle-sens...)

xgbi··on Color Photos of Stalin-Era Soviet Union Taken by a US diplomat
I like the photo with the trash: except for the bike which is in steel and probably a few bottles in glass, I bet the rest of the f the pile would be completely compostable and gone in 2-3 years.

Today a pile of trash is 50% plastic and will linger around for centuries

xgbi··on The NixOS Foundation’s Call to Action: S3 Costs Require Community Support
It is only a good fit if the egress amount is less than total storage, as specified in their FAQ: https://wasabi.com/paygo-pricing-faq/#free-egress-policy

> For example, if you store 100 TB with Wasabi and download (egress) 100 TB or less within a monthly billing cycle, then your storage use case is a good fit for our policy. If your monthly downloads exceed 100 TB, then your use case is not a good fit.

xgbi··on Framework Laptop 13 Review
Isn’t your extension cord the epitome of an identity function?

Theirs is exactly that.

You could spare it if you really want and plug your usbc directly in the recessed port, but the function is not mere identity, it actually provides an extension (as in: extends the reach of the usb port) function as well.

xgbi··on The Anti-Productivity Manifesto
Candid question: how do you finance your sabbatical ?

I feel like a lot of people (I'm in there) are dreaming for exactly what your are living right now, but won't EVER be in the position to do it.

I am 36 with about 14 years of software engineering, and I need LOTS_OF_MONEY per month just to finance my mortgage, the school of my children and the basic living expenses that rose about 50% in the last year due to energy and inflation. If my wife and I quit for 3 month, we are out of our saved money and will be losing the house.

xgbi··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
I asked him to create new plausible scenarios for an X-Ray training program I'm writing.

It was not THAT plausible, but it filled the placeholders I have in my UI quite well and he actually used other words related to anatomy than thos I provided in an example.

Also, I asked him to output the resulting scenarios according to a vague json schema and he complied. Copy/pasted it in my JS front and it went without a hitch.

xgbi··on AI is making it easier to create more noise, when all I want is good search
Tie this to a proof of « browse » and a blockchain to weed out the big players and you got yourself a business model !
xgbi··on U.S. Special Forces Want to Use Deepfakes for Psy-Ops
We already have a semi famous daily show here in France where they are using deepfakes of our president and other powerful people as an humorous take on the current political situation.

https://youtu.be/ampFHEXawUY

It’s quite well done and I think it proves your point: general amusement, and now face value doesn’t work anymore.

xgbi··on My manager spent $1M on a backup server that I never used
Yes I confirm, this looks like the story of my life :-)
xgbi··on The limits of "computational photography"
I think you’re missing what makes iPhone photos look so good; they do much more than just ramping up the sliders on sharpness.

When you take sunlit panoramas for instance, the iPhone will auto bracket and perform hdr treatment, it’s fantastic : you can see both the ground and the blue sky and the clouds. You can’t do that easily with a dslr, certainly not like a phone is doing right now, which is integrating the last x frames and modulating the digital shutter to capture multiple exposures.

Same when you take night shots, where the iPhone is integrating 1-2 s of sensor frames and compensating for movement with the accelerometer. You can take handheld shots of the sky, which is completely out of question with a standard dslr. Maybe Sony can do that with a very fast lens, in body stabilization and a very high iso, but this is 10k worth of equipment right there.

I’m still liking my dslr « real » bokeh and photos, but some of the innovation in digital photos should spill into dslr/mirrorless.

xgbi··on Ask HN: Developer abused “sign in with GitHub”?
> That includes read/write access to code [on public repos owned by the user]

What the hell, imagine logging-in with your account, you as a maintainer of a large public repo, and failing to understand clearly that you are giving a 3rd party the possibility of commiting on your behalf.

Seriously there should be a big red warning on all scopes apart from the "none" one.

xgbi··on Hi, hello, I’m back at it
This comment resonates with me. I have a few websites that my brain goes to:

- hn - old.reddit - lobste.rs

What are yours appart from kottke (which I didn't know about!)?

xgbi··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
I helped build the Linphone app (voip) that Navalny used to out his poisoners.

When I watched this video I was flabbergasted.

xgbi··on NASA – Artemis I Liftoff
Those SRBs sure push hard!

The launch was flawless; well done to NASA, and let’s hope the 2nd stage performs for the TLI!

xgbi··on Tesla engineers were on-site to evaluate the Twitter staff’s code, workers said
Maybe the metric should be "How much diff did you produce. Removing 2k LOC and being able to replace it with 30 is kind of great.
xgbi··on Ask HN: Why don't I see gold at the end of the remote working rainbow?
> People would come over to my desk all the time to either discuss work or shoot the shit.

> I'm more reachable all the time

Does not compute.

You complain of people interrupting you, but you argue that WFH enabled you to be interrupted more, all the time.

xgbi··on Schedule cronjob for the first Monday of every month, the funky way
A bit OT but I’ve been using healthchecks.io for my backup crons on their free tier and it’s been very easy and straightforward.

I’m not affiliated, just a happy user. Having alerts when your cron fails is quite nice.

xgbi··on Google refuses to reinstate account after man took medical images of son’s groin
My son (3 at the time) had phimosis, I took a few pictures of it when a friend doctor asked to see what it was. I sent the pics to him for advice and then we consulted officially to get a prescription for a cream when je told me it was fixable (to dr: it wasn’t entirely but it helped).

I hope I didn’t overstep some kind of bullshit law where I can’t take pictures for medical advice.. this is ridiculous, and I’m happy that I’m not pushing my pics automatically to google, I might have been banned? I still have the pics somewhere on my phone, probably, amongst others where he’s naked when he was messing with foam in the bath or playing in the garden with water in summer. Isn’t this like 90% of parents?!

I feel that this whole CSAM is a new obsession of phone actors because they feel there’s norhing else they can innovate on.

xgbi··on The Low Energy Trap
I just did a quick calculation:

PV produces ~150W/m^2 for a very optimistic solar input of 1000W/m^2. PV produces this output only 50% of time (when sun is up, very very optimistic), so 75W averaged on 1 day

France Nuclear production is 61370MW [1]

To replace all the nuclear power plants, we would need 818 million square meters of PV panels, which amounts to a square grid of 30km.

Obviously you'd have to spread this along the longitude so that eastbound PVs would still be alight when the westbound have fallen out of the terminator.

It doesn't look like much actually. But I'm not counting the batteries to compensate for the night fallout, and I'm assuming 100% sun input all the time.

Did you forget the touchbar or the “low travel keys” that break after a few months?

I feel apple lost the edge on innovation on the desktop space a long time ago.
