xerophtye··on Show HN: TryCatch – Get offers only with your desired salary
Well ofcourse there ARE benefits to them, but I would just like to see you present it to them as awesomely as you presented to us devs
xerophtye··on Show HN: TryCatch – Get offers only with your desired salary
Btw, Wouldn't a good anti-recruiter mechanism be that you only allow employer accounts when you verify that the user represents an actual company etc?
xerophtye··on Show HN: TryCatch – Get offers only with your desired salary
I understand that this is your MVP and you are simply gauging the developer interest at the moment, but I would love to see what you are pitching to the employers. No, this is not about me not trusting you, I am just curious why would the other side use this (or how you will convince them to use it). Since you are building a marketplace, I would like to see how you are attracting both ends of the transaction
xerophtye··on Hacker Says He Can Break Into Airplane Systems Using In-Flight Wi-Fi
I remember once the screen in front of me crashed and clearly booted up some flavour of linux. (it even displayed the penguin!) Oh and i think it did end up on a console... though there were no USB ports visible at the time
xerophtye··on Show HN: QuoDB – Movie quote search engine based on subtitles
One developer did something like that. She'd use subtitiles to create .gif's of movie quotes. made a utility for it! will post if i can find the link
xerophtye··on Show HN: QuoDB – Movie quote search engine based on subtitles
Interesting case: i searched "screw you" and it als turned up results like "are you screwing with me?" , "we would have been screwed..." etc
xerophtye··on Ask HN: Which Markdown editor do you use?
I tried using Sublime text 3 for markdown but there was no significant syntax highlighting.
xerophtye··on Ask HN: Do bootstrapped billion-dollar companies exist?
Does Facebook count in this? I mean they did start with Eduardo Saverin's $10k as bootstrap money no?
xerophtye··on Please add Screenshots to Kanban Cards
Already doing this in Trello =)
xerophtye··on List of Web Business Models
Totally viable. Riot Games is pulling it off with League of Legends. Exact same case: money is just for skins etc. All the money in the world won't give you any unfair advantage. Oh and yes, HUGE competitive scene.
xerophtye··on The Cornish beaches where Lego keeps washing up
well yes, but they pieces aren't just bricks now. They have all sorts of special shape pieces, not to mention the Lego character accessories like flippers, swords, mugs etc etc.
xerophtye··on What's the scariest thing in the world? Ask your teenage daughter
Identifying different behavior in genders doesn't exactly make him sexist. Not in the bad sense anyway. Personally i think the notion that both genders behave identically (on average) is flawed.
xerophtye··on The God Protocols (1997)
Wo, the evidence truly is compelling. Even if Nick isn't Satoshi "Himself". he's at least one of the main collaborators. I mean if you were creating something complex and advanced like bitcoin, wouldn't you seek out the world's leading expert on the topic to help you with it (assuming you have the resources to do so)
xerophtye··on Squink Lets You Print a Circuit Board for the Price of a Cup of Coffee
as someone else pointed out, the portal seems to be hosted on the squink it self. so the portal is jut a way to access the squinkk like u access ur linksys router
xerophtye··on Why can't you find a job with a Stanford computer science Ph.D? (2013)
I don't really think working in the industry makes you a generalist. If you have been working on the same product for a couple of years, your experience is limited mostly to that field, that technology, that problem etc. Of course, the benefit of not being in a PhD program is that you are free to hop around and work on a different thing every year.
xerophtye··on Why can't you find a job with a Stanford computer science Ph.D? (2013)
Because you don't need PhD for those jobs. But as a PhD you would be asking a higher salary than a BS(CS). So its simply more efficient for the company to hire an experienced BS(CS).

But with a PhD, you can target jobs that the employer feels are too complex and demanding for a simple BS

xerophtye··on Why can't you find a job with a Stanford computer science Ph.D? (2013)
Yeah that pretty much sums it up. Having a PhD doesn't magically make you more eligible. You have to demonstrate how you make a value-addition to the team.
xerophtye··on Why can't you find a job with a Stanford computer science Ph.D? (2013)
I am a little confused, i thought the current industry placed projects > places you have worked, hence the entire fuss about github profiles
xerophtye··on Why can't you find a job with a Stanford computer science Ph.D? (2013)
see "Imagine that you just finished working your ass off for a half decade, and are finally looking to reap the rewards." suggests "I worked hard" vs "imagine you are a porsche" exhibits "I am just way way better than the rest of you".

The first statement is just about the guy himself and what he did. It does not present a comparison. The second one comes off as arrogant

xerophtye··on This is a blog post that’s incredibly confusing and painful for me to write
He also said that he was wanted to talk to her and sort things out in private. Sure, you can see that as an opportunity to pay her off/silence her etc, but at this point anything he does can be taken either way
xerophtye··on Meet the Muslim-American Leaders the FBI and NSA Have Been Spying On
> I can't get them to condemn terrorist behaviour.

Wait what? You really need to hang out with different Muslims.

>When it comes to the obvious religious extermination policies that exist in places like Pakistan or Bangladesh, or all over the middle east, again, it does not seem to be possible, in my experience, to hear condemnations of that behaviour.

I am from Pakistan. Americans experience major bombings by terrorist groups once or twice a DECADE. We experience bombings year round. Do you honestly think we wouldn't condemn such behaviour? I don't know what twisted ideologies your local Muslims have, but we as an entire nation of muslims condemn terrorist behaviour. Not just the bombings in our own state, but anywhere in the world! Our religion has strict rules against this even in a state of war! And thanks to "muslims" like these, we have people saying "It would benefit society if people just disavow inhumane practices preached in their relegious text" !! And that is quite absurd as our religious texts actually preach soldiers in war not to hurt civilians or even civilian buildings!

xerophtye··on Procedural Content Generation in Games
My personal favorite is Pixel Dungeon, which was the best rogue-like on mobile i could find
xerophtye··on MIT And Dropbox Alums Launch Inbox, a Next-Generation Email Platform
I am confused. The fund is set up by the company itself right? So if things get so bad that the company has to shut down, BUT they have a fund big enough to keep running the company, why must they shut themselves down to tap into it? Why can't the original company simply use that money to keep operations running?
xerophtye··on Show HN: Twilert – Emails in real time when your brand is mentioned on Twitter
Perhaps it needs to be coupled with some sentiment analysis, so that only get instant emails for more urgent cases, where a user is unhappy 9 or severely unhappy, depending on your preferences). As for the good tweets, they can perhaps send a summary once a day.
xerophtye··on Dropping Loot
Halo 1 actually does that. The Covenant Elites have neregy swords that dissipate once you kill them, and the grunts had plasma cannons that would just explode when the grunt was killed. That's why it was so epic when they made those weapons pick-able in Halo 2

(And Tartarus's Gravity Hammer in Halo 3!!)

Still waiting to be able to pick up Hunter's built-in arm weapons though....

xerophtye··on Dropping Loot
>I did try this, but my experience was that it made killing mobs predictable and boring. "Oh, look, the wizard dropped yet another robe." I deliberately sacrificed realism (which is of limited value in my book anyway) to get a more exciting, surprising game.

My opinion is somewhere between the two. While yes, repetitive loot is boring, seeing an enemy shoot fireballs at me and knowing its because of an item he has (an item i can loot), has its own thrill. "ooo! i want that!". It makes battles more fun, knowing that you are gonna get something cool.

xerophtye··on India's Pointless Search for 'Black Money'
I think he meant the Feudal lords of the agricultural lands and not the actual labour who work on farms
xerophtye··on The Entrepreneur Who Captivated Me
Does that translate to: "it's easy to get a DS job now adays since no one is actually doing anything super advanced. So its unlikely you are under qualified for the job" ??
xerophtye··on Starbucks to Provide Free College Education to Thousands of Workers
Hmm... only EU residents (even if foreign to Poland)
xerophtye··on Starbucks to Provide Free College Education to Thousands of Workers
>using taxpayers' money for a very clever PR stunt.

Firstly i don't think "taxpayer's money" is an accurate description as they aren't exactly using the money we pay as tax. Instead they are deciding how their tax money is used. Not that i support tax avoidance or anything, but if a certain sum of money is being used to provide a large number of people with free college education, I don't really see how the govt can make better use of it. ok i guess there are better uses but this isn't exactly a bad spend is it?
