xenator··on DropZap World – My falling block game with lasers, released after years of work
Unfortunately is not available in my region.

I never released anything in App Store. Can somebody explain why do people not just check all countries and publish everywhere? Is there any reason to not to release worldwide?

xenator··on Menstrual tracking app data is gold mine for advertisers that risks women safety
Still data can be uploaded to the cloud and will be available to cloud providers.

So there is more vectors to protect user data.

xenator··on Valkey Turns One: Community fork of Redis
Why you don't just run new instance with your own Valkey?
xenator··on Ukraine can move beyond its Soviet architectural legacy
In my childhood we had bunkers everywhere. In schools, daily care, around in the neighborhood. I never saw them functioning, but we knew about them. But during growing up them was completely abandoned and destroyed. It took only about 45-50 years after WW2 ended.

We had them because of Germany.

I spent my childhood in Ukraine.

xenator··on Airbnb is in midlife crisis mode
It happens not because of AirBnb. I know some people who run hotel business and they said that covid was that stimulus
xenator··on Mozilla Firefox – Official GitHub repo
If availability is on option then why Github? It doesn't support ipv6 and just cur people from part of the world. It denies access from Iran and other countries that US govs "doesn't like". I understand when small projects are hosted on Github, but Firefox should be much bigger to fit on Github.
xenator··on Mike Waltz Accidentally Reveals App Govt Uses to Archive Signal Messages
US spy agencies are world famous weak and heavy relayed on UK and Israel communications.
xenator··on Third party cookies must be removed
I have feeling that it is all related. When use see request to accept cookies with list of over 9000 trackers it doesn't mean that this page will have zillions of javasripts included on the page. It just means that site owners fingerprint user and process user interactions to third parties server side.

Only reason why we see this movement is because advertisers feels confident about removing third party cookies.

xenator··on Everyone knows all the apps on your phone
During earthquake in Bangkok in Friday Grab (local superior version of Uber) helped me to order taxi and get my kids home. Needless to say that cell phones network collapsed for most of the day. All people want to know what happens and is their family and friends are safe. They definitely have very optimized network layer for poor connections. I bet they can switch to udp or something. I'm glad that it wasn't web app.

In many other cases I agree with you.

xenator··on BM25 in PostgreSQL
Seems like they know about ParadeDB, but for some reason don't publish banchmarks:

"""Another solution is ParadeDB, which pushes full-text search queries down to Tantivy for results. It supports BM25 scoring and complex query patterns like negative terms, aiming to be a complete replacement for ElasticSearch. However, it uses its own unique syntax for filtering and querying and delegates filtering operations to Tantivy instead of relying on Postgres directly. Its implementation requires several hooks into Postgres' query planning and storage, potentially leading to compatibility issues."""

So it is more apples to red than equal comparison.

xenator··on Ask HN: Why are banks charging so many fees for accounts and cards?
Better ask why in other countries charges are much less, better applications, better service and much more services they provide.
xenator··on The Most Expensive Eating Disorder
There is also big question isn't it is more harm to the system removing its ability to produce what it should produce by itself.
xenator··on Direct Sockets API in Chrome 131
Can't wait to see it working.
xenator··on uBlock Origin is no longer available on Chrome web store
Nope. It also cut a lot of content based on CSS and HTML rules.
xenator··on Show HN: A modern Jupyter client for macOS
Except you are really can't use Jupyter notebooks without browser. Because of widgets and interactive elements.
xenator··on Notes in VS Code
I tried several different extensions but ended up with Obsidian. The biggest obstacle is that VS Code is projects centered and I don't want to recreate notes structure every time I start new. At the same time Obsidian offers consistent linearly growing tree of notes in your preferable structure.

I can switch projects several many times a day in VS Code and almost never switch vaults in Obsidian. For every project I have its own structure and can copy-paste items between if I need.

Just share how I organized my workflow.

xenator··on Motorola spoiled a good budget phone with bloatware
Whole Android ecosystem is a mess.
xenator··on Moving a billion Postgres rows on a $100 budget
Tbh I never bothered by these mental restrictions. I can't say that we have effort that requires more than normal human brain can handle (and we aren't smartest people on the planet).

I used to work in one project where we process big part of all shop's cash receipts in one of the biggest european country. We don't use any of these products. And it was done by one person.

Only stupid idea we had was to use AWS. Learned helplessness push people to change best product on the market but without salesman who tickle your balls.

Postgres is one of the best product on the market. But so much FUD makes a new space for "problem solvers" for the problem never exist. I'm not about Citus, I'm about idea that it is require much effort to build something around Postgres.

xenator··on Moving a billion Postgres rows on a $100 budget
Both, we process all the data in several blockchains and make public reports available for our users. Some of data can be processed once, others need to be recalculated on the schedule. So we process every block, every log entity in transaction nature. And also have a lot of data that processed several ways 2nd/3rd/etc times.

We also slowly evolve our internal analytics/intelligence. It is not something that generates high load, but will be at some point. Imagine something like dune.com.

xenator··on Moving a billion Postgres rows on a $100 budget
We operate with 80 Tb of data ATM. It is laying in several nodes and meta nodes (this is our own terminology). All Postgres.

Recently we need to move data from one DB to another, about 600M records. It is not biggest chank of the data, but we need it on different server because we use FTS a lot. And don't want to interrupt other operations on previous server. It took 3 days and costs 0.

xenator··on Physical cash is dying–and you don't need to be a conspiracist to worry
I have visited Denmark and this is definitely last country I want to live. Just simple the worst. I've lived and visited about 40-50 countries in my life, maybe more, it is hard to count.

For me Denmark is best example of modern slavery with brainwashed slaves. I was born in USSR and current Denmark looks very similar. The values of society are too far from what I respect.

I believe if this work in Denmark all other countries should avoid it with all costs.

xenator··on Over 2k shell companies have directors aged 123 years or older
Most lovely genre: uneducated journalists trying to understand numbers and making bold assumptions.
xenator··on Kagi Search – Paywalled articles indicator and improved weather widget
We need this paywall indicator badly here on HN.
xenator··on Protomaps – A free and open source map of the world
Switch to POST request?

If not, then probably it can be done by additional proxy that will convert range headers to GET params. But TBH corporate proxy in this context doesn't seem to work properly. For example, all other header-based authentication should be broken if proxy doesn't respect additional headers.

xenator··on Protomaps – A free and open source map of the world
You can't modify files, because torrent file itself is just sequence of chechsums. But there is RSS extension that allpo to pipe updates of new files.
xenator··on Cockpit: Web-based graphical interface for servers
Why you don't use systemd? Anything against it?

In France near every price also small LCD display that show price for kilogram or liter. Which also help to fight with companies that like to create idiotic packages.
