xchaotic··on Show HN: Flowshare: Create and discover how-to guides for everyday software
Since you’re looking for feedback- on mobile I wasn’t able to tap on individual screens and without zoom they were too tiny to read.
xchaotic··on Tesla Cybertruck
Brutalist buildings are also way more practical than say Victorian ones. Same goes for this car - it won’t win the beauty contest but should hopefully be a lot more practical for those living in rural areas
xchaotic··on Apple’s iPhone Software Shakeup After Buggy iOS 13 Debut
It’s interesting that individuals have this desire- the goal should be survival of the species not of an individual
xchaotic··on Ask HN: What's the most valuable thing you can learn in an hour?
The argument that US businesses are already exposed to international issues anyway is a good. By investing in a US index you are unintentionally diversified
xchaotic··on Ask HN: What's the most valuable thing you can learn in an hour?
All great Metal band names!

xchaotic··on Thousands flock to Wikipedia founder's 'Facebook rival'
The size of the network didn’t doom Google+. It was the product management
xchaotic··on Thousands flock to Wikipedia founder's 'Facebook rival'
The pricing to me seems horribly expensive especially as they are fighting a competitor that is ‘free’ and has way better network effects?
xchaotic··on My Python Development Environment, 2020 Edition
I love Python syntax, but I still haven't found a sufficiently popular way that can deploy my code in the same set of setting s as my dev box (other than literally shipping a VM). So setting up a dev env is one problem, but deploying it so that the prod env is the same and works the same is another.
xchaotic··on Every American Car Brand Is on the Bottom Half of CR's Reliability Rankings
Looks like a lot of discussion here is about housing, but the CR report suggests that most of the issues are with the infotainment systems in cars. And that includes Tesla. I assume that the ecosystem is big enough to create a 3rd player that’s better than android auto or iOS and better suited for cars specifically.
xchaotic··on Biometric YubiKey
Can someone point me to a similar MFA solution where I use my phone biometrics as the factor instead of yubikey?

I have the Authenticator apps but it’d be nice if the phone and computer could exchange those numbers for me.

xchaotic··on Biometric YubiKey
you could maybe sniff OTP over it but to time it with an attack, you’d still need quite a few other things. I wouldn’t get a wireless yubikey personally but I can see how some might prefer the convenience over security
xchaotic··on Ask HN: How do you make sure your servers are up as a single founder?
The direct question was, can I pay someone to monitor my AWS. And the answer is yes. You want redundancy at every layer including the human one. For 24x7 coverage, long term you need a team but for now two people will do.

Funny enough I was just talking to someone who passed all his AWS certifications and was looking for some AWS work.

xchaotic··on Get Ready for New SameSite=None; Secure Cookie Settings
What am I missing, what’s the point? Companies can still aggregate data about you by combining data from those separate cookies?
xchaotic··on We Need to Dream Bigger Than Bike Lanes
I happen to live in an area where roads have been slightly overbuilt and there’s plenty of roads and hardly any traffic on them. I’d say the existing infrastructure is perfect for bicycles we just need to get rid of the cars.
xchaotic··on Don't Call Yourself a Programmer, and Other Career Advice (2011)
I really like that argument and I feel when interviewing I am in that position often, but if you leave money on the table and leave have you ‘won’ the negotiation? Potentially there are greener pastures out there but that’s hypothetical.
xchaotic··on Amazon’s Consumer Business Turned Off Final Oracle Database
As opposed to which Silicon Valley company? Rent seeking is the holy grail of every SaaS company and even the large faangs and Uber and WeWork etc.
xchaotic··on Amazon’s Consumer Business Turned Off Final Oracle Database
That doesn’t make sense a lot of what AWS provides is services such as cloud front at scale. You’d still need to test at scale so infrastructure and experience at scale is part of what makes AWS successful and profitable
xchaotic··on Sleep Deprivation in NBA Players
Team Sky was all about marginal gains compounding, so Sleep was one but not a key one
xchaotic··on Fab in India: India is trying to create an indigenous chip-making industry
How many MacBook Pros do you get though. If anything, what the software developers might want is likely more expensive in Malaysia than Portugal. Likewise for India.
xchaotic··on Attorney General will ask Zuckerberg to halt plans for end-to-end encryption
Basically police are too lazy to do police work ie get warrants and wiretaps at individual homes.

They want a fishing net so they can catch these people by the thousands.

xchaotic··on Apple’s New Mac Pro to Be Made in Texas
In retrospect they were right as PC became commodity anyway
xchaotic··on Serverless: slower and more expensive
One day people will realise there is a Linux box behind Lambdas and you can run your own box in a basement a lot cheaper
xchaotic··on Serverless: slower and more expensive
So what do you use as the backend for now?
xchaotic··on Serverless: slower and more expensive
As general rules these sound great at first sight, but don’t really address the main culprit from TFA - like for like API Gateway costs a lot more to process n number of requests.
xchaotic··on Raising Prices Is Hard
why assume if they are publishing annual failure rates as well as the level of redundancy? Your assumptions are wrong.
xchaotic··on 100 million dollars to reshape the economics of the web
And being legal has absolutely nothing to do with it?
xchaotic··on 100 million dollars to reshape the economics of the web
You mean like censorship? Who gets to decide? Or do we continue to upvote like we do now?
xchaotic··on Banks are getting back into the business of building mortgage bonds
well if they paid more, it could take out any profitability from a product where real returns after fees are already very low
xchaotic··on Show HN: RemoteMore – We connect developers with full-time remote jobs
We have a total of 30 remote workers in our company screen sharing etc daily. We also have a policy of not using cameras and not sharing faces by default. Some people like that for privacy reasons and most people turn off video to save bandwidth and screen real estate. Showing you face is a nice to have but if you’re doing technical work it’s far in the list of priorities
