xbryanx··on Gene Wolfe, 'magnificent' giant of science fiction, dies aged 87
The Fifth Head of Cerberus is such a delight. Made me finally understand the concept of an unreliable narrator. It made me a better reader and expanded my attitudes around colonization. It is a great example of how science fiction can teach us about our modern lives.
xbryanx··on BASIC Computer Games
I have such fond memories of coding in these BASIC games with my dad at our C64 when I was six or so. Honestly the most memorable part was the night I got to stay up late, while he and I spent hours trying to figure out why this one little problem kept appearing. My first late night debugging session.
xbryanx··on Congress Is About to Ban the US Government from Offering Free Online Tax Filing
This is pure anecdote, but...

A NOAA employee told me about the time their boss caught holy hell from a Senator because the NWS had the gall to update a particular weather product they offered by adding color to the map. Evidently someone had a business essentially downloading the free NOAA data and improving it by coloring the maps and selling that as a product. When NOAA made it free, they called their Senator in anger. And said Senator slapped NOAA's wrist.

Seems like the same school of thought in a much bigger market.

xbryanx··on Ask HN: How do you keep your files organized on macOS?
I have moved just about everything of note off my Mac and onto Google Drive and Google Team Drive for our org. I then have access to it via Drive Stream and Google Drive search makes it very easy to find what I'm looking for almost instantly.

For active code projects I really only keep /usr/local/src on my local drive. Those are all git repos linked up to GitHub.

xbryanx··on Google Maps: Bird Mode
It should have been called Bird Mode, because all the images are obviously taken with birds: https://birdsarentreal.com/pages/the-history
xbryanx··on Show HN: GitNews Web – Trending Repositories from GitHub, HackerNews and Reddit
I had several interviewees recently flub this in interviews. When asked about their experience with Version Control Systems they said they used "Github," not "Git." A bit of a warning sign.
xbryanx··on Don’t Get Clever with Login Forms
A NON-QWERTY keyboard at that. With random number arrangement? That's insane.
xbryanx··on Whitespace killed an enterprise app
I think about this every time I watch some physician friends using Epic or any Electronic Health Records system. Those things are dense as hell and packed full of data and utility. You won't see a bit of wasted space. Different problems require different solutions.
xbryanx··on Marker: A terminal command palette
I've been searching for this for years! Never could figure out what people would call it, but I knew it must exist. Goodbye Ctrl+R x 100.
xbryanx··on Huge Cavity in Antarctic Glacier Signals Rapid Decay
Which major data centers or internet infrastructure are most at risk from coming sea level rise?
xbryanx··on No. 1 state for female entrepreneurs is Texas: Study
I think you are oversimplifying.

Your conditions don't really account for Minnesota being #3 on the list. As a Minnesotan I'd proudly describe our state as high-tax, having an appropriate level of regulation (aka much more than Texas), community focused, with lots of interest in finding smart government way to fix lots of social problems. Just another way to get to being a better place for women entrepreneurs.

xbryanx··on Hexyl: A command-line hex viewer
Sorry to ask, but what is he use case for a hex viewer like this? What are the kinds of projects you might be working on when you use something like this?
xbryanx··on Is Marijuana as Safe as We Think?
Those are good sources and I agree with the sentiment, but it does mention this:

"With marijuana, apparently, we’re still waiting for this information. It’s hard to study a substance that until very recently has been almost universally illegal."

xbryanx··on Coconut: Pythonic functional programming
I always refer back to PEP 20 when thinking about these issues (and many things in life actually):

https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0020/

"Explicit is better than implicit."

xbryanx··on Mariah Carey’s record-breaking day shows how little musicians make from Spotify
I never understand why Spotify is so cheap. I'm a bit of a music head, but I would absolutely pay twice as much for the subscription service. Or is Spotify primarily making money off ads or data?
xbryanx··on VirtualBox 6.0 released
I think (guessing) that's because this site is 90% just-a-slightly-themed Trac install. It's admirable that the design for that tool has stayed so consistent.

xbryanx··on US Senate Passes Sweeping Criminal Justice Reform Bill
I agree. Actually active prisoners should be allowed to vote too. Especially when prison populations are factored into district representation population formulas.
xbryanx··on Shame Storm
Jon Ronson's book on this topic, So You've Been Publicly Shamed, is another insightful look at the wild world internet-fueled shaming.

xbryanx··on Virgin Galactic successfully reaches space
The defined boundary of space always reminds me of Jeannette Piccard, the first woman in space (as defined in 1934).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeannette_Piccard

It's interesting where we define what is an isn't space, with its own cultural ramifications.

xbryanx··on Ask HN: What are your “brain hacks” that help you manage everyday situations?
There's a deceptively simple breathing exercise that helps me in almost any moment of stress or important thinking. Just observe my breathing. Don't try to change it, just focus inward and notice what is happening as I breathe. It's amazing how much this can calm my mind or focus my thoughts.
xbryanx··on How we built the largest database of police use of force in N.J. history
If you like this sort of reporting, please make sure you are a paying subscriber for your local newspaper. We must support this sort of essential journalism with our pocketbooks.
xbryanx··on Fearful of bias, Google blocks gender-based pronouns from new AI tool
Your madness is my ideal. I really enjoy living in a time that recognizes more than a binary sense of gender identity. Our language should change to address this. Just like it has changed to recognize that we use computers now.
xbryanx··on Fearful of bias, Google blocks gender-based pronouns from new AI tool
Asking people to refer to you how you want to be addressed is not madness, it's just considerate.
xbryanx··on Why you're having trouble hiring
So are you making the argument that top-level or important tech work can only happen in SF or NYC?
xbryanx··on Italy’s olive crisis intensifies as deadly tree disease spreads
Italy has a messy history listening to and even jailing its scientists, as they go about the normal process of empiricism. https://www.nature.com/news/italian-seismologists-cleared-of...
xbryanx··on Self-Driving Cars Can Handle Neither Rain nor Sleet nor Snow
I wonder how self-driving cars will handle highway lanes in active snow. Here in Minnesota four-lane highways regularly turn to three and two lane highways when the snow covers the roadway markers and people just start making their own general paths. Will the software just follow the crowd, or will the software car be the one weird vehicle ignoring the conditions and following the lane that no one can see.
xbryanx··on Ask HN: How to organize personal knowledge?
I use WorkFlowy[1] as my starting place for all notes, info, and tech tips. It's quickly searchable and the mobile client is easy to use. I really like the structure of bulleted lists for just about all types of information.

It doesn't really cover your file storage needs, but I think that's a different beast than notes and information. When I need to store stuff like that I dump it on Google Drive which makes search/sync/browsing dead simple/cheap.

xbryanx··on Theft: A History of Music
This reminds me of Pete Frame's Rock and Roll Family Trees.

https://familyofrock.net/

Different idea, but a cousin nonetheless.

xbryanx··on Using FOIA Data and Unix to halve major source of parking tickets
When is...dear educated technologists...the last time you even slightly considered working for city government? Alas, our best and brightest aren't serving the people. They toil at advertising.
xbryanx··on Some Bacteria Are Becoming 'More Tolerant' of Hand Sanitizers, Study Finds
I always find it fascinating how much the mechanical aspect of hand-washing makes it more effective than many other methods of sterilization.
