We all know American culture for heavily depended on automative and roads don't work for most countries, probably only work in US.
But to think about it more, why do people have to live in such lifestyle with so much open "wasted" spaces?
Why everyone "has a car already"? All we talk about is the American lifestyle which most American still refuse to adapt or look different.
In my opinion, most people in the valley or in North America still refuse to give up their lifestyle. They look for something like self-driving cars, all electric-powered "personal" vehicle to invest. And those still drive on the same road/interstates/highway infrastructure and don't give you the benefits compare with high-speed rails.
They don't recognize the real priorities - how to transport millions people everyday efficiently, cost-effectively, and most environmentally friendlies.
They also don't recognize local economy, local businesses thrive with these connected network. It is proven to be the case in China and Japan.
High-speed rail network is what people want - to get from point A to point B quickly. It's not something even the most efficient self-driving car with the best MPG electric-powered vehicle can scale for millions of people everyday.
Instead of investing into some new technologies, they seem like they refuse to take decades of proven technology and just use it in US (high-speed trains were first invented in Japan in the 60s)
But as I understand very well in the culture here, the politics, the corruption, and the oil/automative conglomerate will never make this happen for the actual good for the people.
I would without a doubt to say the US is in its downfall as it didn't pick the priorities to fix the root of the problem.
Don't get me wrong, I love learning new languages and every language does give me a slightly different perspective when it comes to programming. It sometimes change how I think in my mind to code.
But do we need a new language just for the sake of someone wants to write a new language?
I have seen many successful startups found in other countries (such as China) Alibaba, Tencent, etc.
Is this a push that all talented software engineers HAVE TO move to the bay to become successful?
I'm very doubtful on that claim.
I guess people like us will never be good engineering hire. That's fine. Standing on the shoes of a startup founders, I probably wouldn't wanna hire someone who's not committed either.
I see no exit for this. I'm preparing to be fade out by the younger blood and eventually lose my engineering value.
I'm not sure what's the fantasy on China. I'd personally prefer winning the 6b population markets over the 1.3b.
Sure, it takes time, but in a long run it is more sustainable. But obviously in a startup world, a sustainable business without the hyper-growth is not much valued.
And I have the earbuds too. Sure another $10, but the sound is very mediocre compare to the stock headphones I got.
I also have one of their TVBox, bought it mainly for my Chinese parents. None of the channels work anymore oversea.
Sure, $10 who cares. But I would rather spend bit more on something that last longer than a manufacturer producing more electronic junk to this already-polluted planet.
If I want a Linux dev box, there are other options too.
I felt this way because that's exactly where I'm in now and I don't seem to find a way out. Need some advice here.
And that's definitely an advantage over TN.
I'm on a Mac now.
I do agree with your above points, but he has his football (sorry American) philosophy which not most fans understand.
The past decade, he cut his spending to just build a new stadium for Arsenal, budget is tight, so what to do? Bring in the new blood, and the hard data + analytics help!
I'm hoping to see he can also bring in some data-driven approach on his on-field tactics and off-field strategy.
I also think he is not the type of guy brag about his tricks.
But this is just for scouting. I'm yet to see someone can get all the data on each games, and help in coming up with tactics and strategy for planning the next match. Perhaps employ some ML too!
